Why gamers complain about their games being taken away |OT| Censorship Controversy Central

I'm an adult and don't need a multi million dollar company telling me what I'm allowed and not allowed to see. If I wanted big brother controlling my life I'd move to China or North Korea.

Surely in the case of DMC5 you know that there's nothing to even acknowledge about it. It seems like most of this is still mole hill territory.

Sony censored a game because they are offended by anything involving nudity or sexuality with women. Why should I accept it for? I don't care how big or small it is. Sony wants to control with people see and they keep doing this shit.

Only if it's a third party game. We'll see going forward if Sony cracks down on any first party games with nudity or sexual content.

Like what? Western games don't really have that stuff. Bloodborne 2 isn't gonna have anything like that. Maybe Sony lets them know ahead of time :pie_thinking:

Last of Us Two has lesbo kissing.
It's ok because they're lesbians unattractive to straight males. And I'm sure it wasn't supposed to be sexual. Remember when the one said she smelled? Ew.

And I can say the exact same thing in response to Sony making Capcom censor a butt. There's nothing to even acknowledge about it, right? So then how come Sony found two butt cheeks significant enough to be covered in the holy light of censorship?

Wasn’t the main one censored in all versions but the carry her plumbers crack?

So we, as consumers, should just roll over and take it?

There's already a ton of nudity and objectification in the game. If you're annoyed about a little light, it's pointless. There is no roll over and take it, you already get the cake. I don't see how a consumer could care about some light on some buttcheeks. It's too little to care about, and it seems like people are sweating absolutely nothing.

Man, if only apathy were a virtue, you'd be like a god.

So how come Sony is so hung up about some buttcheeks in the first place?

I guess that they want their games to be family friendly, and were barely able to censor anything at all. There's only a tiny almost invisible instance of censorship, so to me it looks like being mad at the idea, rather having anything practical to talk about. Because as I said, there's plenty of nudity.

Don't you guys think that you may be going overboard here, like you did with DMC5 PS4?Alot of this stuff is so minor and doesn't actually change anything.
There are game localizations that were completely cancelled over this "minor" policy, like Mother 3, Omega Labyrinth, Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, among others. It means you don't get the game AT ALL because Sony San Mateo or others decided so.
It also seems this policy is getting more and more content in its crosshairs (horror, certain themes now completely off-limits even in text mention which is a step up from Nintendo SNES censorship) to the point it's now more restrictive than some Middle East censorship policies.

I would say there is cause for worry.

Scrap the T rating then, if it's open season on "family friendly" games?
Last I saw, One Piece is definitively family friendly in Japan and still gets shown in the kid's TV timeslot. It doesn't fit Sony's "international standards". Sony isn't afraid of family unfriendly content when it comes to things like Dream Daddy and the Last of Us 2 trailer, so the real reason might be worded better.

Super Seducer and Mother 3 had little nudity and got completely cancelled over very different reasons than just "nudity". Horror games are starting to get affected. Violence is next.
It's not "merely nudity" in "niche porn games". It started with virtual novels based on erotic content, then virtual novels with zero erotic content, then nicher JRPGs, then horror games, then now AAA games and MOST new JRPG localizations, and the list is growing and the cut content getting cast with a wider net. That excuse was used by game journalists to supress all coverage of Sony's policies, among which some pretty insane restrictions on interactions in VR games that go far beyond camera angles - like character interactivity of any kind being off limits, which is, you know, wild for a video game policy (which warranted this thread's existence at all). I'm afraid it has ran out its usefulness.

How is criticizing the censorship not practical? If you consider the censorship of a butt not significant, then the butt wasn’t significant to begin with. The claim that Sony wants a rated M game to be “family friendly” is a contradictory statement.

“Protect the children”, an excuse that was actually used by one of the Sony executives, doesn’t work if the game wasn’t meant for children to begin with. As a result, I don’t see how calling out hypocrisy equates to “sweating about nothing”.

The Executive who said it was from Sony UK as well. (Jim Ryan)

Same guy who called the Vita a Legacy system.

The UK system is known as a Nanny State because we hace stupid things like teachers acting as second parents because the parents themselves can't take care of them and anything slightly Politically Incorrect gets most people angry and outraged. I think they want to put a ban on Fortnite because Kids can access their Parents Credit Cards or something.

Now I wish Sony never promoted him...not a fan of Jim Ryan at all.

DOAX3 didn't get cancelled because of Sony. Tecmo said they won't release it in the west because the Soyboys from Kotaku and Polygon are going to rip it apart for what it is. Tecmo didn't want the negative press in the west which they've always gotten for DOA and DOAX.

This is from 2015

Speaking of resetera:

  • They are asking for Blaster Master Zero 2 to be censored, preferably as an update patch redesign. A robot girl with melon themed breastplates that's mostly covered up.
  • Final Fantasy XIV - The Viera is a female-locked race that's beloved by fans (this is known by the way from a previously featured article about how toxic and creepy the FFXIV fanbase is that was prominently featured on resetera, and which the interviewed girl cosplayer was disgusted at). The writers say it's a mostly female race (similarly, the Hrothgar, as male-only) according to series lore. Resetera says that "nobody wanted that", that the concept of gender-specific customization options is offensive, and this gem:

The good news is, Japanese developers appear to be developing an immunity to fake outrage culture on that other forum. Instead of catering to these extremists who aren't going to buy their game anyway, they are performing their own market research and determining for themselves what their fans want.

My best advice to Japanese developers would be to ignore these activists. Protect creative expression and let the free market decide what content is and is not in videogames.

Clearly you put a lot of effort in the OP.

All I can say is that while I support anyone who wants to start boycotts or whatever over censored content, I really just don't give a shit about it yet personally. Maybe someday I will when stuff gets more serious, but when the biggest stories and anger of the day around censorship involves buttcrack lens flares and underage anime girls pretending to be 18 or breast physics, the audience that gives a shit will continue to remain incredibly low, and it shouldn't be surprising why.

What is so inconceivable about anime girls being 18 years old when the game's info tells them that this is the case?

After all Ellie and her friend in The Last of Us: Left Behind were 14 years old.

You could've just said that you only care if the content that you like gets affected and you don't care about the principle of creative freedom.

And anime girls aren't realistic, so why do you care so much about their appearance and age?

Because they are niche games? Is that what you mean by "and it shouldn't be surprising why."?

Also I think one of the most amusing things I've seen in recent years is the "all anime is pedophilia" thing.

The continuous expansion of what's considered within that circle in order to castigate Japanese artists/creators and anyone that consumes their content.

I understand that some people have a severe hatred of anime and and anyone who likes it but it surprises me how people are willing to be disingenuous and weaponize a serious subject like pedophilia/child abuse in order to brand people.

It's sort of similar to how the criteria for words like nazi, white supremacist, and incel were expanded to include anyone who disagrees with the user's argument on the internet regardless of the actual context of the argument. You don't need to espouse any opinions or views that would accurately earn you any of those titles anymore.

In the same way with Japanese art, you don't need to actually create a character that is anatomically a child. It just needs to be drawn in a Japanese style for it to automatically be pedophilia now.

I appreciate the compliment, backhanded it may be.

Not that it will change your already made up mind, but the above mentioned Mother 3, as well as Super Seducer, Aksys's horror game and the dating sim VR games that Sony had the developers restrict all sorts of interactivity (much less even holding hands) that were already mandated by CERO to cover any indecent camera angles. Neither did involve "buttcrack lens flares and underage anime girls".

Some examples of cut content include entirely textual content that was deemed "too dark" (in the sense that people die in an optional ending in Bravely Second 2, that all swords are replaced with wooden poles in Dragon Ball Legends at the behest of Nintendo of America for a game they didn't publish or distribute, that the very obvious human traficking villain in Persona 5 had huge chunks of his dialogue cut at the behest of Sony, and I could go on...) that doesn't involve "anime titties you just want to wank to, why not watch porn instead" (conveniently, some countries are now starting registers logging anyone who watches porn online in a "totally not sex offender government list").
It's not an exageration to say games like Rule of Rose could not be released today because of Sony of America's policies, or that a lot of possible narrative plots are now completely off-limits (adaptations of Berserk from 15 years ago have less restrictions than today, and that was before the recent censorship surge).

That are reason why I as a Japanese nowadays more less and less eager to engage with international gaming community especially from NA.
I am full enough with the Pedophille prejudice by having explain why that’s is wrong again and again. Meanwhile I never have any problem with this issue with law enforcement organisation in the country which known one of the safest for women.

I know it is about Vampire 2, a game that's in service of the personal developer's politics first and foremost, which means they would gladly obey any politically-driven demands to compromise their work, in which case all power to them.
However, it's a neat specimen of what's to come in the slippery slope of censorship for games.

I name horror as the next target.
We covered here one horror game that got impacted recently.
Horror games are frequently censored in Japan for instances of realistic body horror or gore, or sometimes upsetting scenes (Linda Cube's PS1 version versus its much less censored Saturn port, involved a tortured hostage as a prelude for attempted fratricide), and they get some significant cuts in the West over moral panics (Silent Hill 1's European release, and even all versions which had child monsters cut... or more recently Rule of Rose)... however they seem included in Sony's recent censorship drive.

There's also the issue of accessibility for motor, mental, auditory or visual disabilities, which got weaponised much further than its initial scope, and became mandated (meaning their omission is now illegal) by federal law in the US for some situations, so far only online chats in games with online play (some 2019 AAA games already dropped chat because of this very reason).

Would you all please take a look at this list of demands:

CXwhXPY.jpg

Horror related content:
  • The horror must be "for everyone", and "personal and political".
  • In the name of "accessibility", "proper trigger warnings". Trigger warnings are a tumblr concept where visual content, and even pure text, can be very dangerous and considered an assault on the reader if the consent of the reader wasn't first requested with a list of "triggers" at the beginning of the text, that must spoil the content of the text, list in full all possible cases why this content could be upsetting (an image of a steak would have a trigger warning for vegans for examples). The concept of trigger warnings consider any and all jump scares to be offensive content.
  • Also in the name of "accessibility", skippable terrible scenes. Aversion to violent content and its existence at all even when the game is clearly rated M for adults isn't a new thing. The same demand was done for the "No Russians" mission in Call of Duty, and after the developers obliged and made it entirely skippable, the current demand for its remaster is to purge it entirely. So a similar progression can be expected here.
  • Point to the website "Does the Dog Die" as an example of what to avoid. This website has crowdsourced spoilers for TV shows and games. We can infer plot tension is also a negative that needs to be "corrected".
Political demands because "it's 2020":
  • The obligation to hire a team of researchers, sociologists and "hate speech specialists" to detect unintentional problematic content as it is created and purge it. This is coming from a person who considers the trope of "secret organisation speaking different language" to be antisemitic and "thugs who conceal their face with hoodies" to be racist and the overall gameplay to be "neocon pandering" which is inherently problematic. Most AAA publishers nowadays have "hate speech specialists" who review every single asset from the game, so the assumption here is that their work already isn't enough.
  • The obligation to "do good and show evil". This is in probable reference to the recent trends of including antagonists who adopt some views as part of a cautionary tale preaching to the player. This trend was notably seen among other works in Mighty No. 09 among others when the localization team 8-4 changed one boss dialog to be about "gamergate" and complaints about "ethics in journalism". The Japanese version, while still as shitty gameplay-wise, has a normal Saturday Morning cartoon plot (also with considerably less profanities).
Now, it's obvious this person doesn't get horror, really, really doesn't like horror, and that's fine. But the solution clearly adopted here is to demand all horrifying aspects in horror are purged... except "personal and political horror".
Political horror is probably that indie storytelling trope like in the walking simulator Sunset where the maid's horror is to find her employer's books that espouse very tame beliefs but unlike her own, which is a cause of constant dread and oppression to her... or so is the player supposed to think. As for how that storytelling philosophy would work for a mainstream audience, time will tell.

I was with them initially. Sub titles, closed captioning, sound options, colour blind options, good translations - all things that are very much appreciated. Then they went straight into crazy town.

On a whim I bought Yohjo Simulator. Not the Steam version of course but the updated Dlsite one. This has to be the most silliest reason ever to censor a game and remove it from Steam. Extra triggered for nothing really, while allowing Corpse Party child torture scenes

Imagine if they went to a painter or sculptor and told him how and what to create. They confuse artistic work with educational games. It is the latter that need all those credentials

In latest news:
  • Marvelous' Senran Kagura Seven is very much confirmed to be censored, at the behest of Sony, and so heavily they are dedicating staff solely for the censorship and the original director is so dissatisfied with the situation he quit over it, not without fulfilling his contractual obligations with the in-progress projects first before going to another company. And of course, one more series that just got doomed in this same swoop was Uppers (which isn't as fanservicey, but by the same director, not that it kept game journalists from calling it sexist macho simulators because of the girls cheering for their boyfriends in the back so it was problematic anyways)
  • Microsoft is Stalining all references in Minecraft (as an update, in splash screens) to its original creator, Notch. The intent behind this is that Notch is a criminal in all but name, and that robbing him of his legacy over his tweets is a worthwhile pursuit. The official account is also making jokes about this. Resetera is ectastic.
There's also some news about the legally-mandated censorship, when actual governments are involved after social media screeches hard enough for a game to be made unavailable. I have left out cases about Valve as they didn't develop enough yet to something tangible, but it's something to watch out for eventually nonetheless:
  • Some European lawmakers who tried making a tax, or bans against games that fail tests for how much they abide by feminist values (not the rape, sex or gore content, but even the ideological compliance), into a reality, after all was said and done, cite the creator of Feminist Frequency as their direct inspiration. Anyone who has a loose idea of those metrics can judge for themselves how incredible this idea would be.
  • About Judgement's recent sale freeze, Nagoshi, from the Yakuza team, said they had to cut the incriminated actor as soon as possible on their own, implying it was that or risk an actual ban by some third party (Sony, or the Japanese government) otherwise that would be more permanent than the temporary freeze it currently had. The reason was because the game wasn't old enough to get away with it. He's saying everyone could have been incriminated in something illegal, even their own staff, so it wasn't them throwing this actor under the bus as much as protecting their work in their own way. The character modeled after the likeness of the incriminated actor won't be part of any potential sequel.
  • A bunch of Chinese localized games for the ill-fated Game Boy Advance iQue (from 2007) were uncovered very recently. Nintendo is said to have delayed them over piracy and marketability concerns, but the Chinese version of Advance Wars had Kanbei changed from his loosely imperial Japanese outfit to something else (he got a shave, notably, and all references in text to Imperial Tropes were changed to Special Tropes as well as his dialogue that was now about being the modern incarnation of a Chinese historical figure). This is due to the very troubled past politics before WW2 in Eastern Asia between Japan and Korea & China. The demand came directly from the government, and caused a delay from the planned game release (which eventually didn't happen, and it was the last announced iQue GBA game as well with no less than a dozen more games behind it in the pipeline). Amusingly, this prototype marked a point where the Chinese localization staff found the American Treehouse localizations so awful they started referencing Japanese text instead, which is now Nintendo's standard practice for all Chinese localizations.
As resetera is having no less than three topics in its first page celebrating game censorship, they have an "are we the baddies?" topic where they try and solve the enigma where did the "anti-sjw bullshit came in the gaming community" as a 90% ultra right-wing online population wasn't a reasonable excuse to explain away why their controversies weren't popular. Some choice quotes:

For Japanese games, they want no region differences when it comes to content. Doesnt matter if it means keeping ill-suited material that would keep a sizable amount of the audience away from playing, they want it in and won't budge from their stance.

Luckily sales numbers aren't really on their side, so most game devs/publishers are starting to put a bit more effort into more varied representation (indies faster than huge companies). Except Japanese devs. They are largely going the opposite direction with what feels like an increasing amount of loli pedobait and gross objectification of (too often underage) female characters and very little in the form of (decent) representation of minorities (gays are all pedophiles and people of colour are basically non-existent outside singular characters).

I admit I didn't expect to have to write about the subject so soon again...

I read through a Resetera discussion on Senran Kagura last night and it was pretty civil. Most people expressed dismay and concern with a hope the series will continue. Only a few people were happy that the series was running into trouble. The tone they employed was very disrespectful and full of labeling, though. The negative posts stuck out like a sore thumb.

It strikes me as odd that the tone used to discuss getting rid of these games is so personal and insulting; it seems antithetical to the goal of inclusion, diversity and acceptance. I just don't get it, you can't insult people around you and expect support from them later.

I understand that the internet is a pretty negative place but it really sticks out to me when I see such casual hate being hurled at people who just want to enjoy the games they like. It just feels wrong.

It doesn't seem like the negative people have a lot of support, even on Resetera, it just strikes me as odd that there is this sense of pride that comes with trying to humiliate people for not following a very strict personal view of what's acceptable and unacceptable.

The "civil" debates where the "silent majority" tiptoes around countless word landmines to state they sorta kinda feel bad a lot of games will stop existing, are only in topics celebrating the aftermath of a successful trophy claim for the controversy-hungry.
Then there are the topics which are the actual direct controversy hubs where you don't hear a blip from them, as the other people "just following their own moral code" try their darnest to get people fired and games cancelled, relish in that, and immediately close the threads whenever it comes to fruitition as if to hide something they aren't very proud of after all, and it's not their opinions which they are fine stating elsewhere repeatedly.

I am so sorry, but I don't see eye to eye with you about this particular issue.
There's no shortage of SJW-leaning websites online, some who don't tolerate certain artstyles and countries of origin at all as a forum rule, some who can't discuss anything without trigger warnings and even then those are not enough. But rarely do you see such websites taking their hatred so far they run side doxing operations and coordinate corporate takedowns and try to present censorship, even old-school game censorship, as a constant positive unless it gets in the way of their political messages somehow.
Resetera and Kotaku, Polygon, Rock Paper Shotgun, Eurogamers and company very much earned their reputation. Each one prides itself on their past scalps, but want those to be brought up only when it's the right context, when they get virtue signaling points in their IN crowd, not when it's in the context of exposing their history of witchhunts to the average reasonable person detached from tribalism. Why else do you think Jason Schreier apologized for the Dragon's Crown and its controversy a few years after the fact? Because it followed him around and made his tribalism too apparent to potential interviewees for comfort.

The horror!
And LMAO at ''sizable amount of audience''...we all know those people were never going to give a chance to all the games they're constantly targeting.

The Resetera magistracy has to go.

Trying to get localized releases cancelled (meaning 0 buyers for that particular game) doesn't strike me as a very efficient strategy to "expand its audience". You can see in the comments of the art director of Mortal Kombat 11 that they acknowledge some consumers are not pleased with the one way fanservice sexist in all but name, and that they still could care less about those particular fans.

There are now some SJWs on twitter defending the censorship, who can't really deny it's happening anymore, that now attribute it to... a fictious evangelical right mob online campaigning for those games to be banned. (For note, the latest time this happened was Nintendo denying The Binding of Isaac release temporarily on the 3DS before being called out by game journalists, and their translators in recent games using Greek equivalents for religious figures instead of Christian when translating from Japanese... which might have been a reason why they lost the European publisher rights for SMT4) There's some parties pushing nowadays for game censorship, but they want to have their cake and eat it too, and can't stand being called anything besides brave resistance fighters against censorship who want to give everyone a voice, as they carry on their tactics taken straight from Stalin's notebook (the maoist trials and even the unpersoning).

Games like Ikki Tousen (PS2) and Rule of Rose used to be cancelled by government watchdogs or rating boards giving it a too high rating, or the publisher fearing they may be breaching the law (the last minute cancellation of Yakuza 6 in South Korea, over positive portrayal of characters from a period when Imperial Japan was murdering the Koreans and Chinese, that's illegal in SK).
The party pushing for these games to be cancelled changed. The reasons for their censorship didn't change, as horror and violence and heavy themes are just as "unwelcoming" as the human form is, and it's starting to happen more often.

New potential censored games:
  • Closers, a Korean MMO beat-’em-up already up on PC since 2 years. It was set for a PS4 release in mid April, exclusively in Japan, and using a F2P model, and even received a CERO rating, and was already approved by Sony... had a trailer up on Sony's official channels only for a few hours before someone at Sony California saw the trailer had too much toxic male gazes and ordered it yanked from all official channels. Whether this will translate to the game's approval being rescinded pending more cuts remains to be seen, but the exact same precedent was already set by Super Seducer, that established social media outrage at trailers, either public or private, as reason enough to pull approval.
New calls for censorship:
  • Beat Cop, a Western indie game on the Nintendo Switch eShop... where you play as an eighties cop framed for murder who wants to prove his innocence (uh-oh). The game already received a Steam release in 2017 and then on mobile... but not the PS4. To celebrate the game's successful Switch port after it met Nintendo and the ERSB's guidelines, a censorship board watchdog journalist from Gamecritics.com tagged Nintendo of America on twitter asking for them to remove the game from the eShop over "unacceptably racist and sexist content" it's supposedly "full of".
  • Resetera once again has demands for Sega. That forum previously went after Sega in a -failed- boycott of their European distributor, Deep Silver, the crime being they have the same parent company as THQ which ran an AMA on 8chan. They say Sega "Needs to be Held Accountable for Atlus' Sexism/LGBT-Phobia". This accountability will involve firing Katsura Hashino (this is their third attempt already, after they swept the former two since it brought them too much attention) and "doing something" about "Yosuke's [Persona 4] "haha gay" jokes to SMTxFE's lewd outfits to Persona 5's rapey gay couple" and how "Atlus run rampant and completely disrespect women, gay people, and transgender people ".

Whoa, that's pretty crazy. I checked his Twitter account and he's calling people racist for disagreeing that Beat Cop needs to be pulled from the store. He even Tweeted that if you disagree you should "fuck off into the sun". Classy.

So it's on PS4 too? I stand corrected.
This could be a very interesting story to watch as it develops, and totally the kind of game Sony would retroactively ban like with Super Seducer after enough game journalism outrage.

That game review is also totally something an official PlayStation California game reviewer would write, all matters considered. It even provides a list of crimes in the 5.9 review (that has "slick satisfying gameplay loop")

While the stereotypes which pervade this street of black thugs, prostitutes, porn stars, and Jewish shopkeepers initially seemed positioned as a satire of 80s cinema clichés, the crude writing soon revealed the lack of nuance to these offensively caricatured characters. Humdingers include a Libyan man claiming to have designed a “blowjob burka” so their porn can be as good as America’s and Dirk Wad, an overweight pornstar claiming his outfit is “as tight as an Asian condom”. Beat Cop is a sex obsessed feast of grot that relies heavily on offensive stereotypes and shock to imbue it with humour and edge.

The last Leisure Suit Larry game is getting a PS4/Switch version this summer, but I don't know how that would fare, considering the lesser crimes listed above.

Lol, the dumb cunt from GameCritics.com blocked me. I don't regret what I said :p

Looks like the 1.07 patch for DMC5 removes the holy light of censorship from the PS4 version.
This looks like good news. It gives me the impression that some devs are self-censoring, fearing the unknown restrictions Sony has on sexual content, though. I'd hate to see games censored "just to be safe" from Sony as they have a habit of blocking/delaying games right before release, it seems.

Hopefully we'll see Sony backing off censoring games sooner than later.

Regardless of the reason for altering the one scene, it's nice to see Capcom positively addressing the DMC5 inconsistency, even if they weren't willing to comment on things and their response was likely due to the coverage by larger media outlets.

Just in case anyone is wondering, I can confirm the patch does remove the lens flare from the North American PS4 version. Besides updating the scene in the game's gallery, in the interest of being thorough, I also ran through the affected level and it is free of obscured buttocks.
