Why is it a "pair" of gloves?

You wouldn't buy just one glove.

The English language is strange. Who came up with it?

Because it’s a pair. Most can’t pull off the one glove look. They give you both for your own benefit.

A pair of pants is weird tho

Yes, it is. Pair of underwear as well.

But would you buy one glove? It's obvious that they come in pairs.

"Pair of gloves" makes sense because they are a pair of items, each of which is a glove. "Pair of pants" actually makes sense as well, because each leg is a "pant". Each pant used to be a separate piece, like gloves. They just overlapped at the crotch and were held together by the belt.

"Pair of underwear" is actually wrong, even though it is commonly used. Underwear as we know it was never two separate pieces.

Pair of underwear makes sense because it’s a layer between your clothes and both your butthole as well as the cock or puss.

Umm... because it's a pair? I mean, regardless of the fact that you can't buy just one glove, it's still two gloves, and two is a pair. Pants and underwear are the ones that need that question. A pair of pants and a pair of underwear for a singular pant and underwear. How even?

So you are wondering why it's a pair of gloves, even though you fully well know that you usually get two, but have no issue with a pair of jeans, but only actually getting one object?

You are getting two jean pant legs sewn together. It's short for "pair of Jean pants".

Pair of underwear makes sense because it’s a layer between your clothes and both your butthole as well as the cock or puss.

That covers the "underwear" part, but not the "pair".

English is strange....but in Spanish we say "Un par de Pantalones" (A pair of Trousers) when we talk about 1 trouser.

edit: LOL it's also a pair of pants in english too xD

Quit your complaining and learn something about counting objects in Japanese. FUCK! That shit is annoying.

Because 'a' doesn't work with plurals. You wouldn't say 'a gloves' just like you wouldn't say 'a birds', you need the other word in there. Basic English man.

Because there are two of them? Like, two physically distinct objects that correspond to your two physically distinct hands?

As has been mentioned, 'pair of jeans' is the real mind boggle.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
It's a pair because there are two of them. Just like with anything else that there is a pair of.

Language just develops, no one is set there to hold norms.
Holding those norms is something we started doing in 19 century.

Meh, English is pretty easy when it comes to silly methods of counting things. Try Japanese, where squid and octopuses are counted like liquid containers (杯), farts are counted like bullets (発), and shares of stock are counted the same way as tree roots (株 ).
