Why is licking the plate a problem

I got scolded at from my buddy for licking my plate, and I'm like dude, chill out, it's my sandwich, and my plate.

It's looks bad socially, that's it. You put forks and such all inside your mouth so it's not like they have to wash the plate even more because you licked it. It just look weird to people. I lick my plate when no one is looking because I don't want to hurt their feelings. It's the best way to get that extra sauce if you don't have any bread or something spongy to wipe it up then eat.
