Why is the Friend Limit on Live Still Stuck at 100?

Apologies if this was made already, search is borked.

I'm constantly juggling friends, having to decide who I play with more. Even nixed some irl pals because I just don't play the same games. When is the cap going to be upped? Or better yet why not add some clan-like social groups, no ranks in games or anything, but just group like structures so that you can invite people not on your own list into the same game?

They're pushing facebook, twitter and yet failing when it comes to actually adding people to your friend's list.

You can, I think. But I'm not a huge online player so I'm not entirely sure. I know there have been GAF XBL groups for arcade games, racers, shooters and etc.

Search isn't borked. :p

When Microsoft discontinued service for OG Xbox units, one of the stated reasons was because the hardcoded friends list elements were holding back the 360. Although there's been no progress since then, Xbox Germany did claim that the 2010 firmware update would raise the cap. This obviously didn't happen (and I can confirm the cap is not raised in the new firmware beta), but hopefully it will soon.

Thankfully MS makes it a little bit easier with the "People I've Recently Played" tab, so you don't feel obligated to friend someone just to hit them up for a match again, but it's still less than convenient.

OH I'm used to seeing it in the corner. Whoops. I hope it's raised. People I've Recently Played with is fine but still not really a solution, as I literally am at the cap now and having to remove people I don't play with "enough."

Wasn't friends list one of the things that was expected to improved when they cut off Live for original Xbox games. Was that just speculation?

And you just made me realize that next gen MS and Sony are probably going to include Uncharted 3's facebook friend list on a system wide level so you probably won't have to think about juggling IRL friends.

Microsoft said "Original Xbox was the reason". That was one of their excuses for killing off the original xbox.

But now? They're probably keeping it as a "feature" For the next Xbox.

I just can't see the "100 friends" limit staying next-gen.

What? I hit 100 really easily, I have to constantly delete friends to add new ones which is annoying.

Because 7 8 (ate) 9.

As stated, Microsoft said it was due to the original Xbox live and the infrastructure around that. Maybe it's just not worth the hassle increasing the limit.

But the original xbox live is now terminated, it doesn't exist anymore, so that's no longer their excuse.

What we REALLY NEED is someone interviewing them to pop the question.

That limit is quite easy to reach.

How? How can you have 100 different people on the Xbox you consider friends? I keep my Facebook friends list below 60 people and that's naturally going to be a larger list than any gaming based friends list.

If anybody here has an interview or is going to PAX next year, please ask a LIVE Represenative this question. Thanks a bunch.

Not everybody shares your philosophy. Some people like keeping a low amount of friends, some people like keeping a high amount of friends. Research was conducted saying the amount of friends you can have and still have a healthy social life at the same time was 150ish.

If I play an online game like Dark Souls, I like to have a good amount of friends that play that regularly, but also have friends I can play Assassin's Creed with, so I have friends that play that, etc. It really helps my online experience.

I I think about 30 or so of my friends I know in real life. The rest are people I've randomly found online that I enjoy playing with, or GAF players.

It's obvious memory related. The systems on both Live and PSN seem designed to keep (some) data of the entire friend list loaded at once.

While it is entirely possible to make a system that can hold an arbitrarily large number of friends without using more memory (using paging), a large re-structuring would need to take place. The API games use to interact with the friend lists would also need to change a lot and it would be complicated to get existing games to work with such different system.

Just because some of you are social introverts doesn't mean you have to question (sometimes condescendingly) how people can reach 100 friends. I do it easily and have to go in weekly to clean it out... its just the nature of the system. You log on late at night and sometimes none of your friends are on so you lone wolf it. One of your teammates happens to have a mic and is a willing and knowledgeable communicator, and after a few games of steamrolling the other randoms you add each other. Bam. You're at 100 easily. I have about 12 clanmates, 20 or so RL friends, and the rest of my list is full of people who are good players at the few games I play and I can jive with quite well.

Matter of fact I'm betting that those with a low friend count probably have communication set to "friends only" on their xbox or quite simply don't even use a mic. I'm a very talkative person on Live. I communicate with my teammates during the game, relaying enemy positions, calling out directions, etc. In the lobby between matches I'm also known to engage in banter, smack talk, etc. So I get friend requests nearly daily. An increase in FL limit would be quite welcome here.

Yeah, it's frustrated me that they discontinued the original Xbox Live yet have failed to do anything about the friends list, opting to throw more and more shit on the Xbox I either don't care about or is simply illsuited to handle (namely Facebook and Twitter, especially since Twitter at least isn't all that well integrated anyway). Though they probably need to overhaul the settings on notifications and whatnot first, I'd really appreciate if they split up achievements/friends are on/friends are sending messages, and maybe even include an option to see if they're playing a game you've marked as "notify me" so you can join in.

Not quite. What folks do is create free silver accounts for a particular game, and then you have to search that account's friend list to see who's playing.

It works, but it's not a true clan/group system.

100 friends is not enough if you like to play with a group of people in a specific game. maybe you got a dozen guys in MW3 and another dozen who actively play MP in UMvC3 or Uncharted 3. it's not about only having people you know in your list to me.

I cannot imagine how annoying the notifications would be at, say, 300 friends.

Hopefully they expand the robustness of the notification system where you can leave achievements on and messages/friend notifications off. As it is right now, it's all or nothing with the one exception being that you can disable them when watching a video.

I'm 99% sure this is the reason; I'm betting we won't see an increase until next gen.

Yes.

Because not all of them are online at the same time.

Ever thought of that ?

Yes I did actually. Suffice it to say, I still stand by my original statement.

What do you consider a regular basis? You play with everyone on your list once a day? Once a week? month? year? Are you in a huge clan? Or are you just that popular? Do you play like 10 games at any given time and have game specific cliques?

I rarely add much people these days, heh sometimes I'm the only guy with a mic and with people using party chat I can't make much xbox live friends.

Just mainly cousins and people I play basketball with are my xbox live friends.

I'm really surprised it's not raised though, I know some kid that adds anyone after he plays a match with lol

100 isn't that much. I don't know why I have to qualify what regular means. But I've played with over 75% in the past month. I've got people in various countries, time zones, etc. I like having more people so when I log into Halo, there is a greater chance to play with someone. I'm past the point of playing games alone, is that hard to understand?

How is having 100 friends = popular?

Anyway, I got like 15-20 peeps online everytime I go online. I play with like 5-10 at a time on games like MW3 and BF3.

Some are old game buddies from past games like UC2 and GT5. Some just add me after a match on either MW3 or BF3.

I'm on different forums btw so GAF ain't the only source of online friends.

I delete people who are inactive for 1-2 months, unless I personally know them IRL.
