Why wouldn't you wear a seatbelt in the car?

I just saw a commercial for "click it or ticket", there's people that don't wear seatbelts? Why?

There was a time when I didn't want to wear one because I disliked that I was being told I HAD to wear one. It was my life, who are you to tell me that I need to wear one. That sort of thing.

Then I had kids, and I stopped thinking like a selfish asshole.

I tend to forget when I'm in a work truck. It's a habit that's developed from the fact that my car has automatic seat belts and the fact that I'm in and out of the vehicle so often. If I actively remember I'll throw it on.

because I don't value my life that highly and I feel like i'm Captain Kirk and the rules do not apply to me *zing just got back from watching Star Trek*

*advice* try not to worry about others and focus on your own life, and stop calling other people stupid for doing things you do not approve of irregardless of the value you place on doing said thing.

Advice: How about you wear a seatbelt so you don't send your body flying like a torpedo through the air and into oncoming traffic.

There comes a time, while driving down the freeway, when a man just has to take off his seatbelt, put on three pairs of sunglasses, and absolutely throw caution to the wind.

This is a totally one-off type story and I know the odds don't go in this direction on a regular basis but it does happen. An old couple that lived next to me when I was younger were in a bad car accident (I honestly don't remember the exact details except that it resulted in a roll-over). The husband was wearing his seatbelt and the wife was not. The wife was thrown through a window in the car while the husband was locked inside during the roll-over. Neither died but the wife was hospitalized for relatively minor injuries and was released after a couple days. The husband still is (maybe was, I'm under the impression he is still alive) in a vegetable state. Sad story but hey, lends some credence to not wearing a seat belt although it is small.

As for me, I wear it when I remember, I honestly don't think about it when I get into the car.

Taxi Drivers are exempt from wearing seatbelts over here (uk) because the theory is they are getting in and out of the car constantly to help with luggage and the like.

I think its dumb but whatever.

Yup, cause anecdotal evidence totally lends credence to a position

Washington drivers are assholes anyways...
This, coming from an Oregon driver :lol

But I digress! I think the reason for people not wanting to wear belts though is really just an easy way to 'stick it to the man'. Eh, it's a stupid form of anarchistic protest, but whatever. I just hope they learn to buckle up so they don't end up killing themselves later on.

*advice* Never listen to anyone who uses the word "irregardless."

Put your fucking seatbelt on so you don't launch through your windshield and kill someone else by smashing into them like a flying projectile of ignorance.

I work at a mechanics shop so I'm constantly playing tetris with repaired cars in the parking lot.

This has led me to forgetting my seatbelt when I actually drive now on occasion.

That said it's on accident and usually only for a minute or three.

Read the book Freakonomics.

The main stigma that was fought against wearing seatbelts from decades past is that the driver's ability in handling a car was demeaned if the passengers wore seatbelts. The driver felt insulted in this case.

Everyone has one of these "my cousin's friend" stories and even if they're not lies or half-truths, the number of lives saved by seatbelts so far outweighs the number of people harmed by them that it's completely asinine to even bring it up.

My friend went to a crystal therapist and his cancer went away! My other friend had surgery for his cancer and he died. Therefore crystals are better than surgery.

That is what you said.

Edit: I wear it all the time--I don't even think about putting it on anymore it just happens. My ex would never wear hers and it drove me fucking crazy. I would tell her "I am alive--right now--because my seat belt saved my life in a crash" but it never sunk in.

I seriously don't understand how you can 'forget' to put a seatbelt on.

It's like leaving your home without any clothes on.

The stupidest thing about the click it or ticket commercials in PA is that you cannot be pulled over for simply not wearing a seatbelt, it is not a primary offense. You can get hit with it if pulled over for something else but police cannot pull you over if they see you not wearing a seatbelt.

Just astounding. How utterly stupid would you have to be? As though car accidents can always magically be avoided somehow and at no point do people get smashed into by someone running a stop sign or just straight up not paying attention.

It's the same here, but I also think it's stupid. Taking on a seatbelt is one of the fastest and easiest things to do. I work doing delivery that's rarely much more than 5km away, but there are dozens of things that take more time than the seatbelt.

I was in a cab in Istanbul where the cabbie didn't wear his seatbelt, which is normal. I would've had my seatbelt on, if my seat had one. But when we got on the highway, he put on his seatbelt, and he immediately took off the seatbelt when we left the highway. I don't get the logic.

Not what I said at all, but jesus, assholeGAF is in full swing apparently. Sorry for telling a personal story on a message board where people come to discuss.

I mean it takes like a second to snap it on, doesn't even get in the way.

I would never advocate not wearing your seatbelt, but wearing one can get uncomfortable. I'm not tall enough for the one in my car.

Like hell they can't. Cops park at the U-turn by my house, and when you slowly roll by, if you're not wearing one. Boom. Ticket. They do it for expired registration and inspection, too.

My wife was in a car accident when she was a teenager that would have killed her had the been wearing a seat belt. Instead of being crushed, she was bounced into the passenger seat.

Nowadays cars have so many crumple zones and extra airbags that the odds of a seatbelt killing rather than saving are damn slim. Not gone, mind you, but damn slim.

I actually got similar remarks frm my Italian family when I visited them in Naples. Constantly asked why I was putting my seatbelt on.
