Considering the Wii must be relatively easy to manufacture I can't believe they aren't able to ship more units. How many PS2's were sold in its biggest years? Surely more than 13 - 15 million. I would expect Nintendo to be able to ship at least as many units as Sony did.
I still can't buy the bloody thing and I am starting to get pissed off and slightly disinterested in it. Luckily I'm not missing out on too many games at the moment, but it's still annoying the **** out of me.
Stevie, that last one can be given to 1Up Yours. You can't leave them out.
I don't know if MS' gaming division has even broken even yet - but if they have, it doesn't change the fact that they still seem destined to sell pretty much exactly as much as the original XBox, give or take a few million. Sony, well that's another story. They've barely sold 3mill PS3s, and they've sold half the portables that Nintendo has too. They're not feeling so good right now, and I'm sure neither is the SDF.MS is doing great, SNY is seeing red.

Plus, I want developers to do truly great, original stuff with the Wiimote. That will only happen if there's enough money to be made.

They need to get units out there to ensure the likes of Mario and Metroid sell to as many as possible, selling Mario Galaxy to an installed base of 6m sucks hard. Selling Mario Galaxy to possibly 15m makes Mario sales HUGE!
Schlep said:I'd give it a year before the Wii is swamped in kids, licenesed, and random casual games or even crap like those "Over 3000 games!" discs you see on bargain PC shelves. Nintendo fans, however, won't be upset because they'll still get the same 10 franchises they've always gotten.
Schlep said:The reason you don't see a whole slew of new games being announced by major publishers, and probably never will, is because of who the Wii is selling to. You've got Nintendo fans buying the thing, which traditionally have always only bought Nintendo games reliably, and casual people who, at the most, will buy 2-3 games per year since the game system isn't the major source of entertainment for them.
It's genius by Nintendo to come out with this thing at $249 to really make a ton of money on the system itself, and then sell their traditional games to their traditional fanbase. It's like money x 2.

isn't it a little early to compare the wii to the ps2?Epiphyte said:I fixed that for you.
And, if I recall correctly, despite being the king of shovelware, the PS2 had a few good games that somehow managed to get noticed in the sea of Madden and Barbie Horse adventures. Strangely enough, games like Gran Turismo and GTA were able to achieve massive sales in spite of being shelved among masses of crap.

But now you have the 360 which offers a lot more, at a price that is getting more affordable. It could be very competitively priced against the Wii this Fall.

You can buy a core pack with a game for less than a Wii and a game in most places.
You can buy a premium pack with 2-3 games for £299 (GoW, Crackdown and A.N.Other)
Or you can buy a Wii and 2-3 games for around the same price. Yet the Wii continues to kick it in the ass and outsell it by a huge margin
all the others are banned.starship said:Stealth troll? Nice attempt junior.
Seriously, what's the deal with these recent junior trolls?
xabre said:The SNES sold 50 million in its lifetime...I think that's the lower end of what is attainable with Wii over the course of its lifetime.
True, but I was trying to make the point that having loads of shovelware on a console is not necessarily a bad thing.hadareud said:isn't it a little early to compare the wii to the ps2?

Packing in Wii Sports is quite possibly the best decision Nintendo has ever made in the western market. No one would have bought the game if it wasn't packed in. Wii Sports? Remember how we laughed? Look who's laughing now.

to sell 2m in Europe is a big achievement in a short space of time.
UK normally accounts for 30% share of the Euro market so thats a lot of Wii's in the UK in 5mths. I somehow don't feel the 360 is shifting this volume due to the MASS of incentives here to sell the hardware.
