Wii U digital+retail sales chart updated with July 2013 data

Gamasutra.
About a month ago, Nintendo quietly released a combined digital+retail sales chart. Now there's an updated list on Nintendo's site.
July 2013 List
  1. Donkey Kong
  2. Pikmin 3
  3. EarthBound
  4. New Super Mario Bros. U
  5. Rayman Legends
  6. TANK! TANK! TANK!
  7. Injustice: Gods Among Us
  8. Zen Pinball 2
  9. Wii Street U powered by Google
  10. Cloudberry Kingdom

The fine print says: "Best-selling titles for the Wii U according to NPD Group Inc. based upon recent unit sales."

It isn't clear how these sales are being combined, or over what period. NPD confirmed to me that the previous list, which appeared in early July but before the release of NPD's data for June, did not include June NPD data.

Edit: They also have a "Most Popular Downloads" list:

It ... doesn't include Pikmin 3? These charts are so strange...

I'm calling it July but that's not technically true since it can't include July NPD data yet. (That will be pre-released to companies like Nintendo on Wednesday.) The last thing Nintendo PR said to me about it last month when I asked was "I'll get back to you". I'll ask again.

For reference here's the list from last month:

I don't understand Rayman Legends. It isn't out yet... can it be pre-ordered or something? Surely not the demo?

Right. That's why these charts are so weird. It's like they're combining digital data from their own records with the previous month's retail figures, or something. That would explain why they don't say what specific period it covers, no?

Yay Earthbound made in the top three, it could'nt crack the top 10 upon its original release. Watch it outsell the original.

Glad to know Earthbound is doing well. I was afraid that after all the hooting and hollering for it that it wouldn't sell that well and Nintendo would just abandon the Mother franchise forever.

Honestly I wish they would just return to showing only NPD physical retail.

The disorganization of this chart makes it impossible to use as any metric...the rankings are just too esoteric.

Almost positive that Luigi is counted under NSMBU and that injustice DLC packs are counted as the main game as well.

"Most popular" might just be overall and not just July, hence why Pikmin 3 is missing.

This seems like a good interpretation, but I think it's funny that Nintendo would count NSLU as NSMBU when they make the dl chart but count the same downloads towards NSLU on the overall chart (Art Academy overtakes NSMBU in the overall chart compared to the DL chart).

Probably it's because NSLU is going to be its own thing soon at retail, while digitally it'll always be a NSMBU DLC.

Given how the two Resident Evil are in the best sellers charts, but not in the most downloaded one, I suppose they changed the criteria again: now, they're clearly separating between download only (Most popular downloads) and retail + download titles
(Best sellers). So, a retail title with digital promotions (like the two Capcom titles) can be high in Best sellers charts despite no changes on the retail front at all...without being in download charts at all.
