Wii U has sold 3 million in Japan

How? Those numbers show the opposite from where I am sitting. Please explain where you get "bombed" from.

The PS4 is considered to not be doing so well.
It launched 15 months later, was 30 to 50% more expensive (depending on the WiiU SKU you consider), and is now at 2.3M LTD.

For the Japanese market

but in the context of the global market

There's something to be said about the failure of the Wii U (or Console Market in that region for that matter) when even my beloved PS Vita is outselling the Wii U there.

It's not surprising at all that Vita is outselling Wii U (and PS4). Portable consoles are a much stronger market in Japan.

And Japan is a mostly portable/Mobile market now. So it should in no way be expected to compare. Look at the PS4 which has a 36m WW install base but only 2.2 in JP. Look what the GC did 4m. The DC 2.6m the Genesis 3.6m.
Haha, when you start comparing Wii U numbers to the Gamecube and Dreamcast to try to paint a pretty picture, then you know it's a bomb. PS4 is doing just as terribly, but it's not launching its successor this year.

Considering 3rd parties gave zero f-cks about Wii U the past 2 years the numbers are very understandable.
PS4 numbers wouldn't be any better if the 3rd party support was as laughable.

People should stop referencing data that makes me feel uncomfortable because games get ported to platforms I don't like

Which is the sad part about this whole ordeal because I love the attention my PS Vita is getting but I won't deny how badly things have changed in recent years in regards to Japanese Developed games on Consoles.

TBF the Vita is the second highest selling handheld/console around. Japan is it's best market. It's largely that everything outside the 3DS is dead hardware wise (Wii U actually has a few million sellers which is it's major saving grace).

It's a good thing Sony didn't completely alienate third party support with their hardware and business decisions then.

But Japan is like ~30% of Wii U total sales and less than 6.5% of PS4 ltd.
True, but I'm not seeing how that is relevant. Console gaming is dead in Japan either way. Wii U and PS4 won't be selling more than any of their predecessors. I imagine the NX handheld and PS4 will be the only relevant platforms there in the next few years, depending on how long the PS4 gets support.

That's crazy to think PS4 only has 2.3 million and X1 is at 63k. How can they be that low still?

Because Japan is not terribly interested in consoles. The 3DS has outsold Wii and PS3 and is on track to outsell the PS1 and PS2.

And AmericaBox never stood a chance.

But that's nintendo's special sauce! You can't have a console without special sauce!

Well, unless the special sauce is semen.

I think people are missing the fact that PS4 hasn't sold more than 2.3 million-ish in Japan yet.

Consoles in Japan are hurting in general.

The one unqualified success for the Wii U in Japan is Splatoon, not hardware. A May release still in the top 10 in January, one million sold on a console with a 3 million base, and it seems to be selling systems (as much as you can with a dead system anyway). And I doubt many thought it would be this much of a hit.

The Wii U has only sold 11 million worldwide and it's been out for donkeys years. People aren't missing anything.

That means it is not selling well WW, which really has very little to do with Japan... which is what this thread is about.

3 million in japan for a home console is pretty good. theres a chance it will outsell gamecube which would be crazy to me. Worldwide sucks of course, but this is a thread about Japanese numbers so whats the point of stoking that fire in here?

Eh seems about right considering how the home console market is faring there. Course it be nice if it has done better, but it not really that much off.

To be fair, the PS4 launched more than a year later and was more expensive.

These past 2 years have been barren for the PS4, with respect to games for the JP audience.

2016 has so many games coming out though, so it should be a much rosier outlook.

I never expected it to hit 3 mil in Japan, so I'm somewhat impressed. It's funny to me that people are getting defensive about the ps4 not selling as much yet. Bu-bu-but worldwide guys! Lol. It'll be fine, don't worry.

Nintendo can't do no right in 3rd parties eyes. They tried their best with Wii U but the support dried up even quicker than usual.

Not Denial. But if you look at the facts it is doing al right. Not a leader for sure and I would agree not doing as well as NINTENDO expected pre launch. But I would not call it a bomb. Just look at the YOY sales growth.

YOY growth isn't something to write home about when you're starting off we such low sales. But whatever, you can spin this into a positive if you want, the Wii U is still a failure regardless.

WiiU ~120k/month
PS4 ~210k/month

That's not how this work.

Launch allinied, the PS4 has sold 2.3 million in 98 weeks, which is an avg of 23.5k at week, Wii U in 126 weeks, so an avg of 18.2k

Is doing better, but still disappoint sales ( in Japan, of course).
