DeftectiveReject caught an update on Nintendo's Japanese Website that suggests that the Wii U may be renamed to the Wii Entertainment System.

This is making me a bit giddy. Either that or it's finally the week to stop sniffing glue.

Dude, why did you made the thread?

The icon is the WiiWare icon and this is the only 100% English part on a Japanese website.

IT'S FAKE!

They just need to remove the Wii name. They'll make the same mistake with the 3DS. Launch sales will be terrible, I can hear the ignorance now; "it's just another Wii". *Punch in the face*.

Who's going to call it that? Did anyone say "Entertainment System" for the (s)nes? People will just short it to Wii, making it identical.

Sounds more like they dropped the U and are just going with something generic for now. We heard rumors before that the Wii U name was being reconsidered.

Stop sniffing glue, it's fake. haha

They need to drop the "wii" entirely
What I wrote in the Wii U thread:
StevieP said:
The Wii is Nintendo's most successful console by leaps and bounds. It would be a mistake *not* to include the Wii name after a hundred million or so sales.

The 3DS was poorly advertised and poorly placed (i.e. 3DS games were mixed in with DS games at stores). When I went to buy an iPhone, I certainly knew the difference between the 4 and the 4s, despite their relatively minor upgrades (certainly the aesthetics were exact). Although I am an informed consumer, Apple certainly made these differences known via advertising.

Am I confident that Nintendo can hit it out of the park advertising the 'new' Wii? No. But to discard the success behind that name would be crazy in my opinion.
But yeah, this:

They also need to set giant piles of money on fire.

This would be better in a name standpoint but worse from a brand confusion standpoint. Wii-U at least shows that it could be something new, but Wii Entertainment System could make people think that name is just the "long" name for the Wii.

AAAHHH GAF is really testing the boundaries of my sanity
My quote :
I feel its a bit hard to believe that Nintendo is stupid enough to post such information on their game release schedule where they don't post anything but game releases date in full blown English.

Makes sense. I was always shocked that they didn't release a Wii with a NES paint job and retro classic controller bundle and a few NES VC games installed.

I still prefer Wii 2 or Super Wii Entertainment System, at least the latter sounds almost like the SNES.

Oh, really? It's making gobs of money right now? It made gobs of money. Right now it's being treated as a tired fad by the buying public.

Just name it Nintendo Entertainment System and call it a day. Mario isn't selling 10 million units on DS because Wii is in the title. It's selling because of the Nintendo logo.
