Clickbait Hardware Will 1st party console titles be better than 3rd party PC games next-gen?

So, for many years now we've had a gaming landscape where pc was miles ahead of consoles.
A common complaint has always been how the low-power-consoles held back any serious advancements to technological development in video games.

Skip to 2020 where suddenly new consoles will wield technology that actually does not commonly exist that way on modern gaming PCs yet. But in 2020 the pc market is no longer totally seperated. Games launch on multiple platforms at once and even crossplay is a topic that finally is relevant. Microsoft even stopped having console exclusive first party titles.

What will be the consequence of this? As we already established, we're not only talking loading times when it comes to the new memory solutions; but game designers dream about constructing gameplay and worlds not possible on our slow machines of the past. Will these games not exist on pc for a while? Will publishers just ignore the pc market share? Will developers not actually use the technology provided to them to make sure the target audience is not too limited? Will only platform exclusives actually profit from the advancements?

Give me some opinions here, I'm interested in how you guys see this developing.

How many TFs are we at on pc now? How long have ssds existed already? How many high profiles games (GTA5) are modded to look almost native in vr? How is the state of emulation? Of modding? RTX injections? How many consoles games will reach the ambition of star citizen in this decade?
This the questions you should have asked yourself first op.

I don't think you realize how fast those consoles will be left in the dust
Are you sure? Seems it will be more difficult this time.
Or too much community astroturfing is beginning to work on me.

Do you think that's gonna change? CPUs and GPUs more powerful than either console's have been available for nearly two years, and Nvidia will be releasing a line of new, even faster cards later this year. By the time next gen consoles hit their stride in terms of exclusives mid to high-end gaming PCs will be way ahead, and the bitching about consoles slowing down progress will start all over again.

I was actually half-serious when I opened the thread. Mods editing the title didn't help.
Developing games with nvme's in mind will put the common the gaming pc at a disadvantage. If the game actually REQUIRES this speed people on a HDD or slower SSD might be fucked. Could be interesting to see.

Are we going to be in a place where your third party AAA game means more than God of War or Mario? 95% of Nintendo sales are exclusive and I also think not having exclusives is a guaranteed crisis (Google Stadia) exclusive lineups matter and get consoles through generations, hell exclusives are more vital now than ever, I'm optimistic about Spider-Man 2, God of War 2 but think 3rd party games like Red Dead, Doom etc. do just as a good job and more people get to play them. They figured out how to get Grand Theft Auto V on PC, so they should keep the PC AAA games going, people are excited about them.

you are right, and yet games like tsushima or tlou2 running on a 1.8 tf are still highly impressive and better for some things compared to any pc game, i never saw locations with a shitload of stuff moving at the same time because of the wind like in tsushima or faces\animation like tlou2 or an enemy\creatures with more details and polygons than a thunderjaw from horizon.
there is not single game on pc with simple enemies detailed and animated like this one, not even metro exodus or control

so yeah, pc are gonna have the best rtx, best shadows, best lights, best lod, etc, but console are not gonna leave in the dust.
(and i'm mostly a pc gamer)

I’d be curious to know how many PC gamers don’t have at least one SSD in their rig right now.

I can understand the thinking behind the post, that games requiring the consoles nvme storage bandwidth could have issues on PC ports or not work at all but I don’t think it’s going to put consoles ahead of PCs
Most gamers have 16gb or ram, at least one ssd, and a decent gpu. If consoles can't beat the high end gpu's of 2 years ago, and they aren't even released yet... Imagine how much more progression of hardware, that pc's will get over the next few years.

I reckon games will start requiring SSDs of a certain speed on PC, and there will be a lot of Steam refunds for a while as people begin to understand that they need to upgrade. But there will be a transition period of a year or two, just as there will be on consoles.

PC Gaming is better than console gaming. Also, Death Stranding is pure trash. Please pray for me.

PS5 exclusives will be more unique in level design and open world gaming.

There hasn't been money in making games that devour top-of-the-line PCs like they're a lowly chewie toy for years. Even if a PC version looks great, it's virtually guaranteed to have been compromised in some other area to permit a console release.

Nope. I played Witcher 3 on Pro, X1X and PC. I got 4k/120fps on my PC, both pro and X1X didn’t give me that so its yeah, it’s automatically better to me.
i mean yeah if framerate is the most important thing for you, you are right, but in terms of raw graphics that game get destroyed by 2017 horizon and utterly obliterated by days gone or rdr2, i played both the expansion of w3 the last month at 4k60 and he looks noticeably worse than modern open world games.
mods can help a lot but mods are kinda of a cheat, it's not the original graphic.

i think the topic was about graphics, not framerate, we already know that pc is always gonna be superior for framerate stuff, but csgo at 1000 fps still looks like shit compared to modern graphics :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

oh cmon, you understand what i'm saying, the example was just an example, don't ignore the rest of the post to concentrate on the joke not serious part.

i don't have any interest in defending console with a powerfull pc at home ready for a gpu upgrade in the next months 😆

I don't really see why it should matter why the graphics are better on PC. If someone had the money for a gaming PC and wanted the best graphics possible, there's no way they'd go "Yeah, this looks way better on PC, but that's because of mods, so I'll just get an Xbox."

you have a point but i'm pretty sure that even modded w3 is noticeably inferior to modern games for a lot of graphical aspects.
also mods were available on xone x if i remember well, they are not a pc exclusive, unfortunately nobody really works on mods for console these days.

Yeah, but what's stopping anyone from modding modern games on PC? If CDPR make a next gen game it'll just get modded again on PC.

correct, but like i said, some console games still has the edge for SOME graphical aspects.

i made some example in my first post, modded rdr2 or w3 doesn't have all the shit on screen moving because of the wind that you can see on tsushima (basically the reason why people thought that game was on ps5), nor detailed enemies or faces like tlou2 or creatures detailed like the dinobot in horizon.

and it's incredible to even think this because these games are develope on a 1.8tf machine wher on pc you have 13+tf gpu.

I've got both a great PC and a PS4 Pro and it's been a while the best looking games have been on consoles. Not due to raw power obviously but due to the fact Sony 1st party has more budget and more time. Their artists are among the best in the industry and art direction is what makes the difference nowadays.

With diminishing returns, this trend will continue. Technically speaking PC / PS5 / XSX will look and feel the same on screen, but biggest budgets and best art direction will continue to make the difference (and even more now that next gen consoles will be relatively more powerful), which means Sony 1st party console games will be again the most beautiful games you can play.

But that’s the point. PC gaming *is* about frame rate.

Sony certainly has some nice looking exclusives. They have very deep pockets and allow Naughty Dog to produce animated movies with quick time events and some simple shooting. But the frame rate is sluggish.

That’s why I tend not to like Sony 1st party. Frame rate is their last concern.

Of note, I’m convinced that part of the reason people love Nintendo exclusives is how often they try to hit 60fps.

buddy i have a pc almost solely for 60frames, i know how important they are.
but the topic was more about impressive stuff on screen, and some console games still looks unbelievable with only 1.8tf under their asses.

But even that fps difference will disappear next gen. Every game will soon be 60 fps even on consoles, simply because they'll have enough power to do so on PS5 / XSX... And you can't really use this power to impress more graphically due to diminishing returns.

But all of that could have easily been done on PC. The only reason those games look better on consoles is because they never got a PC release, so there's nothing to compare them to.

The truth is that making big budget titles that push the envelope in terms of graphics has gotten prohibitively more expensive over time, and it simply isn't financially feasible anymore to make PC exclusive games that pushes modern hardware to the limit. There will never be another game like Crysis where the graphics are so demanding that currently available hardware can barely run it, because PC sales alone won't be enough to recoup the development costs.

But even that fps difference will disappear next gen. Every game will soon be 60 fps even on consoles, simply because they'll have enough power to do so on PS5 / XSX... And you can't really use this power to impress more graphically due to diminishing returns.
I remember people saying the same thing back in 2013. Look how that turned out.

Developers will find a way to add enough shit to bog next gen games down to 30 FPS, especially at 4K.

wishful thinking, i think a lot of first party devs are gonna follow the "more graphic at 30fps" for a lot of exclusives.

the best cpu and gpu on pc (superior to anything inside the nextgen console) can't do 4k60 frames with a lot of heavy games.

No they won't, you already saw tons of games with 60 fps performance mode on PS4 Pro, there's no reason this trend disappears on PS5. It's already happening now.

Multiple PS4 Pro games already have 60 fps performance mode, I see no reason it doesn't happen on PS5.
