Will Final Fantasy 7 Remake Episode II be open world?

Now that we are out of Midgar and the game is opening up do you think Square Enix will go full on open world with it, or do it see it continue being linear like the first game, or FFX-FFXIII?

I really don’t see how they could keep it linear but I feel like it will be a lot of work to make it fully open world. IM thinking it will be similar to Dragon Quest XI with big open areas but very little branching paths.

From Nomura and Director Hamaguchi's comments it sounds like it won't be linear at all. Not only Nomura but I think the latter also emphasized it'd be different from Part 1. That said, I don't think it'll be a seamless open world. Large open zones makes more sense to me and provide better level design.

Because of how that game is after that point, it would have to be...

So I expect it to be open world as I don't see why that would be an issue for such a team tbh

YukiOnna YukiOnna yea it would be hard to make it seamless based on how its being made now, but I expect some massive remaster PS5 collection to be seamless. I feel sorry for those future PS5's M.2 drives lol

With the right resources, it should be not that difficult.

I really don’t consider the original as open world as it kept you focused on a specific path, even if you tried to bypass something on the map, the next npc would not talk to you until you went back to complete the original task. This is what I’m expecting…
…plus this next part is where I get to ride a Chocobo around the map. ☺️

Eh part 1 really lost steam about halfway through, there’s a huge marked difference in the quality of the later part of the game, fun and polish wise.

Let then do whatever they want with it, fix the sloppy combat system though.

im suprise if it is open world. it might be either good or bad things. but with PS5's SSD they might pull it of.

im guessing big open area connected. something like GoW or FF13 with lot open area and town.

Open world with nice big chunks of content to discover and sink a decent amount of time into before moving on, because that's what the original felt like once you left Midgar

What I don't want is a huge field full of pissy little bite-size tasks

Bruh I loved remake but if we go open world a la XV I'm out. I hated that stiff, empty open world that added close to nothing to the game. To me VII remake was a back to the roots well implemented jrpg. Exactly what I dreamed the future would be like 15 years ago.

I hated all the corridors of FF7R and all the backtracking through them. That shit got really old, really fast.

I hope it's more open than VIIR. To capture the feel of the original, it has to be somewhat open, as that was one of the coolest parts about leaving Midgar for the first time. I personally think they should just say fuck it and go old school world map, but I think we all know that's not happening.

As an alternative, I agree with those who've said there will probably be zones kinda similar to have Tales of Arise did things. Large areas that link together a lot of locations.

I'd be totally fine if they decided to go the FFXV route, but I consider that unlikely too. FFVII's world map really didn't have a lot in it. For the 90's it did, but to make it truly modern open world style, for it to not feel complely barren, they'd have to artificially pump it full of so much bullshit that it wouldn't feel like FFVII anymore.

So a good middle ground IMO is how Tales of Arise did it.

Absolutely, it needs to be atleast breath of the wild sized, with natural borders controlling progression.

I suppose since you won't be able to go everywhere right away it's technically not open world.

People expecting BD1 to make an open world game are crazy.

I can expect some very big areas (like Pirates in Kingdom Hearts III, or Gran Pulse in FFXIII) but it will not be open world.

What? If anything, minus the chapter before heading to Shinra Tower, the second half picks WAY up in terms of steam.

And the combat isn’t perfect but it’s nowhere near “sloppy” lmao there’s a reason it’s so praised.

It definitely will not be. XV was made by a completely different dev team; one that was trying to emulate a more typical Western open world.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
i would prefer a "semi open world", like FF7 remake 1 but slightly bigger scale.

Dragon Quest 11 definitely seems to me the best way to go about it

Remake felt claustrophobic by nature of the setting. I expect Part 2 to be a lot more open, at least visually. But open world? Nah. They don’t have enough time to fill an open world with tons of crap to do. They have to be able to deliver a finished storyline at some point, with part 3 probably shipping at the end of this console generation.

I don't think the team has what it takes to develop a consistent open world rpg game to rival western's attempts, so I expect BD1 to play it safe and probably offer larger but still contained areas...

Open world is sure the popular position, huh? I'm in the minority here - I generally prefer linear adventures. Not because I don't like open worlds but because they're seldom done better than linear ones. The middle is usually ideal: Progressively open the player up to zones with a few side destinations that they can visit now or later or maybe skip entirely.

If the remake part dos is anything like the original Final Fantasy VII, it'll resemble that last one.

Completely agree. As long it stays faithful to the original like remake 1 I have no issues.

Remake 1 was the Midgar section which was linear just like the original.

I would prefer if remake 2 had a simple world map much like the original . Add to that locations which you can select to enter and continue the story etc.

Only difference I want to see is enemies can be seen on the map as opposed to random encounters.

Don't want to see the seamless open world like FF15 which caused development hell for Square Enix and added nothing to FF series.

Open world is the biggest blight on current gaming so hopefully not.

Also if you played the Yuffie DLC they get escorted to Kalm via a cutscene so... You ain't entering an open map on booting up the game son.

I think it'll have more open areas then part 1 but they can't really do a full open world as there's going to be more parts after this and there not going to get to the point in the story where everything is open to explore the world. Can't wait either way.

Considering FF7 Remake ends at the point where you hit the world map properly in the original game, I think it's safe to assume the next game will be open world, or at least the world map will be

"HD town is still hard" Team will never make open world . The first game is just hallway corridor without anything interesting , you think they can design a open world . i dont think so

I was hoping for it to be like the first one. Open world games that try to portray a large area tend to make them feel small.

In the first game you really fell like you really are in Midgar because when you combine everything (including areas you don't have access to) the city is massive.

I don't want open world in a sense of BotW or AC but I would be disappointed if we don't get mega maps like in Xenoblade with seamless transition into towns. Should be not too much to ask I hope?

I hope we get an announcement soon. And we get something before too long. I could even use more DLC to be honest. I just want to spend more time in this world.

I don't think so. To me it will be more like Uncharted 4, grand but focused. I hope Square up their game, FFVII Remake is beautiful but very inconsistent.

They typically use the Luminous engine for their "open world" style games, i.e. FFXV and Forespoken. It will be interesting to see what they do with UE4 if they do go "true" open world....

Edit: Also, I'm hoping they announce the game is now current gen only. Really want to see what they can do without the restrictions of PS4 tech

Potentially... in a way I can imagine the open world being close to XV in how it works. The issue is the details for cities and towns would have to be huge.

Looking forward to seeing how they deal with it, the alternative is to double down on the whole "breaking the cycle" thing from the first game and create new linear story based around the origenal's games locations.

If it's 'open' as in giving you some freedom as in the original, sure, go for it, but if it's the generic, go anywhere open world, I certainly hope not.

I really hope not. I don’t mind larger environments like the Souls games or TLOU2 that were big, yet somewhat linear and allowed exploration. They were a good balance. Who am I kidding? It probably will be open world even if it’s a detriment to the game just to make the mainstream happy.

FFXV is an open world attempt and honestly a weird one. Would you want VIIR-2 to follow a similar structure? Since you mentioned DQXI in the OP.
They aren’t too much different, a lot of invisible walls.

It makes me wonder how modern they will go with FF7R. In the teaser at the end of intergrade they were walking down a paved road/highway.
