Some context: Used to love AC (Ezio trilogy was my favorite), but Valhalla was the first AC I played since Black Flag. I really liked it for the first 20 hours, but I soured on it shortly after. I didn’t like the huge focus on combat and large scale battles. The side content was bland, and I just felt like the game wasn’t offering nothing new or exciting that I hadn’t already seen within the first few hours. I ended up quitting the game and just looked up the ending on youtube.

The recent 60 FPS patch for Odyssey makes me want to finally give it a chance though. The setting looks perfectly suited for an AC game, and Cassandra seems like a stronger character than Eivor. How different is it from Valhalla?

I didn't care for either. Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla are all similar and I thought they got successively worse (or at least more tedious from playing the previous entries).

Black Flag is still the best AC, in my opinion.

Odyssey has a better protagonist (Kassandra) a better story (the ones who came before AKA Isu) and better combat because the protagonist is basically a god. Also I was not a fan of naval battles on previous games but this time it's entertaining as f. My only complain is the loot system (too many pointless armors) in my opinion it's one of the best AC games ever. But you need the dlc to experience the whole game, because the dlc is basically Assassin's Creed Odyssey Part 2.

It’s a much better game but it still has the same issues:
- Requires a lot of grinding
- Map too big for its own good
- Very repetitive side quests
- Main storyline sucks

It’s actually ridiculous that despite Odyssey having all these issues, Ubisoft decided to make Valhalla have the same issues but even worse.

But yes, with Odyssey I at least managed to complete the main story and the main sidequest arc. With Valhalla I gave up not even half way through due to boredom and it not respecting my time.

It has a far better protagonist, that's kinda the big difference.
Also a more interesting rpg system for weapons and a less confusing skill tree.

But you still have a lot of bloat, mediocre combat, shitty sidequests, mediocre main plot etc.

Try origins instead.

That’s why I want to play it. The setting looks like a mix of AC 2’s architecture and Black Flags tropical setting, while Valhalla is more like AC 3 with its countrysides and tiny little huts and buildings (one of the weaker AC settings IMO).

Also to give a bit of credit to Valhalla, one thing it does better than Odyssey is the "Assassin" gameplay when you're infiltrating a city to kill a target. But that's like 15% or less of that game.

No, valhalla is much better in straightforward approaches because enemies aren't damage sponges. In valhalla, when you get the proper skill early on, you can assassinate -anyone-, making stealth gameplay actually viable.
In odyssey you'll be switching gear to headshot someone with an arrow, and then again to stealth assassinate someone, and then again to go into combat; it's honestly the weakest aspect of the game.
Valhalla got rid of all the dumb gear system, so you can actually just play the game, instead of looking at gear stats and dismantling 99% of it.

That said, kassandra is great, the setting is great, and it has a large emphasis on naval stuff, so if you liked black flag, you'd probably like it more than valhalla.

No kidding. The level gating doesn't make it challenging. It just guarantees that you fail until you level up enough to do a thing.

So you never played Unity? If you like the Ezio trilogy a lot and stopped at Black Flag I would play Unity instead of Odyssey.

Unity is like the culmination of the older games style and has lots of new stuff to make it feel fresh next to Ezio trilogy, like descending from buildings, the giant scale crowds and the new investigations and puzzles/riddles. I loved it so much... too much maybe lol.

Its also the first game where they went 1:1 (or close enough) on many buildings scale so it feels way more epic than Black Flag and everything before it. Also the motion capture and faces are still as good as many games that come out today, they fucked up the faces from Origins onwards. Although Origins & Ody has some good main faces, just terrible side characters faces and animations. Vahalla is not great in comparison imo.

Only tip I'll give is: Getting the pieces of armor from the coop missions can be chore in SP since you must repeat from three (3) times to get all pieces, but I treated it like a sort of speed run thing where I would do it legitimately the first time and then develop "cheesey" ways to kill all the guards/targets really fast (ie shoot/arrow everyone from safe positions) and speed through the mission.

I liked Odyssey way better. The setting is more pleasing, I liked the characters more, I felt there was less wasted time and less down time, and the missions felt more interesting.

That said, if you didn’t like the gameplay loop and game structure of Valhalla, you might not like Odyssey, because all the 3 new AC games follow the same basic format since they’ve been RPGified.

Odyssey is also long and 100+ hours if you want to see most of the quests - although the newer 3 are mechanically different, they are rooted in the same fundamentals.

If you played one AC, then you played them all. I really enjoyed the original AC, but after that I couldn't get into any other AC for more than 10 hours regardless of what other gimmick they threw at it. The constant push for lootbox, ubisoft account, and DLC also didn't help.

Odyssey can be a slog at times BUT the setting, combat, and visuals make it worthwhile if it clicks with you. Yes, there are a lot of meaningless forts and encampments to clear, but it's actually fun to rampage through them as you level up and gain new abilities. By late game, you're a demi-god and can spec out your character in so many different ways. There's a lot to like about the game, despite its bloat and relatively weak story.

So i havnt played Valhalla yet, but personally my favourite has been origins, obysessey though seeme to be the complete opposite, its more dragon age inquisition then origins or Valhalla, i actually loved obysessey but the only thing i hated about the game was that hidden blade was instant kill but if you aint big on rpgs id go for origins then obysessey, obviously origins is rpg but its more assassin creedy then obysessey imo

It’s a gorgeous game, for someone living up in the cold northern Sweden it was gaming prozac, like going on a sunny vacation. Loved it!

Abit off the thread but ive recently started playing obysessey, just finished the wolf of sparta mission which i think is episode 1, but im on the fence about getting Valhalla, i loved origins i like obysessey but its alot different to origins so my question is, is Valhalla more origins or obysessey

What's Obysessey? Either way Valhalla is a mix of both but boring. Combat is way better than either though.

Valhalla I thought dragged on just slightly too long initially but hitting the first dream sequence, and at later points, it kind of added a needed break to things in the main game, and really works to break up a bit of the monotony, while also making up some of the best parts of the game.

I think Odyssey, was great in a lot of the same ways Valhalla is, but it just doesn’t let up on the routine, it’s just non-stop island conquering quest chains with nothing but the requisite Animus breaks. If you thought Valhalla is a slog, this is a bit worse. At the same point the characters are a bit better and it definitely makes you feel absolutely OP as the main character.

This is not true at all, maybe in the first few hours, but if you aren't specifically geared for assassin damage in odyssey, you aren't assassinating shit, and even then some targets will require the critical assassinate ability, which costs ability meter.

Valhalla actually does have instant kill assassinates, like an ac game should.

yes, the setting is 100000x's better, Kasandra is 10000x's better controlling and more fun, the gameplay is better, the ship combat is better. Its all just simply better.

It's a collection of systems that's less than the sum of its parts.
It has no shields, which is criminal for a game set during the Peloponnesian War.
On the other hand Alexios is a chad and it's pretty.

If by new ones you mean the latest three, than only valhalla comes the closest, it has guaranteed assassinations and you really don't have to ever swap out your starting gear for the entire game, you can just let the game distribute your skill points and just focus on playing.
The other two are far more RPG like and especially odyssey makes a big deal about gear and gear levels, and it has no guaranteed assassinate.

If you are talking about games after AC2, it's pretty much all of them up till origins, my favourite being Syndicate.

The combination of the setting and great controls honestly do make it a joy to play. Even though the game itself can be kinda weak at times. It's actually a relaxing game to just run around in because you really feel like you're in Ancient Greece. Origins is similar but Ptolemaic Egypt doesn't have the same relaxing vibe. The atmosphere is a little more foreboding in that game. I haven't played Valhalla but I don't like the aesthetics at all. It looks so dreary.

It never reaches the warm glowy enviroments of odyssey no, but valhalla does have a bunch of colourful areas on the south of the map, like in Cent.

Maybe, its up to you. Some people like different settings, stories, themes etc so its really hard to tell.

You got to play it and decide tbh. I'll tell you how much I like Origin or Odyssey etc and someone will tell me how much Valhalla is better. This is up to you and I don't really know if anyone can really state what you'll like or not, we disagree about lots of shit on here all the time lol

Played through it twice. Love it. I actually replayed it right after quitting Valhalla, and the difference in quality and polish was astounding.
