Will Nintendo finally announce a localized Mother 3 at E3 2017?

EarthBound Beginnings was announced at the 2015 Nintendo World Championship.

This year we've got an E3 Spotlight and two invitational tournaments (ARMS and Splatoon). Also, there might be the developer roundtable.

So who knows. Maybe!

I doubt very much that Eurogamer would have reported on the localization with their own sources if it wasn't happening, though the quick death of the Wii U certainly pushed things back further than some were expecting. It's certainly the kind of splashy title that you would want to launch a service like VC with to go alongside the usual suspects, even at an expected premium over other titles.

I don't know what other objections really exist for it at this point, as the major ones boil down to these:
-"They didn't do it in time for its 10th anniversary!"... which is still true of its Japanese release on Wii U, given that it came out 5 months and in the previous year prior to it. Nintendo demonstratably doesn't give two shits about anniversaries unless its Mario, Zelda or Pokemon.
-"The content is too hot for NoA!"... for a series in which its previously released installment was re-rated to T without any changes and being content to finally release the first game with a T-rating to boot, signifying the understanding that they aren't trying to grab the Mario RPG crowd with this series. The way some people go on about "MY MAGYPSIES" would make you think that they were tentacle porn monsters, like gender-fluid entities would really shatter minds these days.

What good is a Nintendo monthly subscription service that includes modified VC games if not to finally translate and release iconic games that never made it West.

You may say I'm a fool,
Feelin' the way that I do
You can call me Pollyanna,
Say I'm crazy as a loon,
I believe in silver linings
And that's why I believe in Mother 3!

There's been so much smoke around this particular rumor that it feels close to guaranteed sooner or later. Just depends on when Nintendo gets their Switch VC story sorted out.

You probably know this, but Mother 3 was originally going to be an N64 game, in full 3D and everything. :-O
Yeah I know. It sucks it didn't work out, but it still came to the GBA. I want to see Nintendo do Mother 4 in full 3D on the Switch. We haven't had a console Mother game since SNES.

But Itoi said so himself.

I know this too lol. As I recall didn't he say he doesn't want to do it and he wouldn't mind if someone else did it? Hopefully, this is what Sakurai is working on.

GBA VC games were $8 on the Wii U, and ,I'm assuming will probably be $8 on the Switch.
I don't see how they can raise the price from that for Mother 3 just because they waited 10+ years to localize it.

haha what, you know that shit's gonna be like $19.99

and I'll pay it

I remeber LKD or Emily rogers saying it was weird how many different sources kept saying it was coming but nothing ever came of it. They were pretty confident it was a thing.

the fact that they haven't cut Clyde Mandelin a check, used his translation, and released this game years ago is baffling, and also kinda really shitty. he put so much time and effort into that translation, and it's so good.

For whatever reason, they seem dead-set on not releasing it unless they do their own, ground-up translation (probably to remove the swearing and censor some other "questionable"
lol
parts of the game). And, in so far as they don't see the time and money that would take as "worth it" (EarthBound's huge VC sales notwithstanding), they will never, ever release it.

At this point in time I have zero interest in it.
Enough time has passed for me to play it and forget what the story was about.
I'll only be interested in Mother 3 if they remade it in 3D.

I just don't care about the gba game anymore. It would be a hard pass if it ever, EVER, get announced.

I think one of them mentioned it was going to be put up on the Wii U eshop, but they decided to hold it back because it deserved better than to be stuck in Wii U hell forever.

I don't know, expecting them to localize a 2006 Game Boy Advance game is setting a pretty high bar. We should give them a couple more years to get it right.

That's because it isn't his translation. It was a big group effort and it would be a legal nightmare to determine what to pay everyone involved. And some people would probably be butthurt and start suing if they don't get the amount of money they think they deserve.

It's best if they just do a new translation.

its not coming ever despite the fact its the most self contained one in the series

its amazing with the context of two though and you can tell nintendo knows how weak 2 is with all the padding and grinding and bullshit dragon warrior mechanics keeping players from seeing the charm and context for three

only way i see if coming out is if they remake 2 and nerf a bunch of it and bring its gameplay in line with 3 and release em as a dual package
earthbound and earthbound gaiden / sidestory / presequel / zero / after / #FE

I don't really know anything about this particular situation, but what you've written sounds right. If there was ever any chance Nintendo was going to use an outside translation, I think the potential rights and legal issues would be the reason they'd decide against it. If it's complicated like you say (and really, anything other than one person who did everything would count as complicated), I could see them abandoning that idea early on.

I was already a believer after they finally released Beginnings and then the Eurogamer and Emily Rogers rumors showed up, but Reggie's comment about it (and Metroid!!!) cemented it as "definitely happening" for me. If it isn't at E3, it'll be during a Direct later this year... Honestly though, they have no reason not to announce and also release it during E3 as a Switch exclusive.

Of course that's assuming they're smart and don't want their fans to riot, this is long overdue.

Kinda insane that the best Nintendo-produced game to ever exist doesn't have an official release in the west.

Yeah. Tomato was the lead, but there were other people directly involved in the development. A bunch of other people were not part of the team, but involved in helping out, and even more people being "thanked". By thanks it could be as little as contributing the translation for one difficult word, or maybe even translating a simple sign graphics in the game. Unless ALL of those people waive their contribution rights, the reality is that Nintendo would have to pay all of them. Even if only one of those contributors is unable to be contacted, the whole thing would fall through.

If every contributor signs a waiver, then yeah. But Nintendo would rather make their own translation really.

I changed my EarthBound related GAF username I had since 2006 cause I've lost all hope.

We've been threaded along far too long.

What the hell is this nonsense?
mother 2 is really weak because its full of dragon warrior bullshit like revives at a church absurd enemy encounters that become trivial after grinding an absurd number of enemies for one or two levels and incredibly low inventory restriction?

its so incredibly charming and so is 3 charming / thought / emotion provoking but mother 3 is 15-20 hours long and earthbound is stuffed to the brim with dragon warrior pacing breaking trash

I dunno what game you played. grinding is not necessary at all in Earthbound

the inventory restriction totally does suck tho

I believe it's coming. Not sure if it's coming this year. I don't think they would have put so much hype into Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings if they didn't have plans for it. My guess is that they'll just translate and release the original game, but a remaster or remake would certainly be welcome. They'll have my money either way.
