Will PS5 take advantage of having 2 display outputs beyond just VR? (HDMI & USB-C )

PS4 had second screen display when playing VR games but PS5 will have HDMI & USB-C standard so I'm wondering will games support dual display other than the VR games.

But even if games don't support dual monitors I hope the support for USB-C monitors is there like the Nintendo Switch.

Reasonable guess:
Dual display has seen very low amounts of support over the years - don't expect anything more than what you saw on PS4.

No chance of dual screen support, for example. Too low adoption rate to bother spending time on and too resource heavy for limited boxes.

No, and I'm also 99.9% sure you won't get video output from USB-C. They're focusing on TV support only so HDMI.

Let's assume they did, what would the second display be used for?

Pornography, obviously...

They would be dumb not to have video output from USB-C because it saves them from having to have another box for VR on PS5.

I have my PS4 connected to my PC monitor so having a dual screen wouldn't be a problem. But for all the people who game on their living room tv, I could only imagine they wouldn't be connecting a second tv.

The full screen map idea would be something I know a few people would enjoy. But I certainly wouldn't want the cost of the console to go up even a penny for it. Not sure if it would or not. Just saying my piece.

Not gonna happen. Second screen gaming didn't pan out with phones and what is the liklihood of people having two displays connected to a PS5?

I'm an old man (33) and I don't play online shooters so I don't know what this means lol

Is it a KD(A) reference?

Yep.. only a bit worse than my usual 2 and 12.

On topic though I have dual monitors setup on my PC and havent used it for anything but playing on one side and looking things up on the other.

Ultimately I think it may be pointless because PiP systems on TVs are getting better all the time, by the time they have very powerful + inexpensive SoC's in TVs, and the spatial resolution/image processing has reached a sort of limit we'll see them spend the processing power on other things like PiP.

My TV does PiP right now, as do all X1E+ Sony TV's, I think LG and Samsung do on the higher models too (In fact one of them had a much better implementation in either 2019 or this year if I remember), but its usually limited to showing other HDMI inputs, so you can't show youtube or netflix or an app in a PiP while you view an HDMI source, at best you can do it the other way around on the newer Sammy/LG I mentioned in brackets above, ie HDMI source PiP while using an app. On my Sony it only works with HDMI sources, its disabled when viewing apps.

I can see how QMS (Quick Media Switching) might help out in some way, because it would possibly allow showing different refresh rates and resolutions within the same frame, if the OS supported it. I think the current idea behind is "just" to reduce the time it takes to switch between modes, so no more/heavily shortened black screens when going between HDMI inputs or apps.

This is Sony we‘re talking about, they‘ve made quite a few mind boggling design decisions over the last few generations.

Wouldn‘t surprise me if they just rock plain simple USB-C data ports instead of e.g. TB3.

Why would that count among their mind boggling decisions? None of these consoles are going to have Thunderbolt 3, until it's absorbed into the USB 4 spec which this is too early for. When not using an Intel 10th gen chip, you need a separate TB controller die.

They have small usb-c monitors that only need the usb-c cable for power & video you could place one almost anywhere.

It's pretty much standard in USB-C at this point because they can double as a DisplayPort , I actually haven't hooked any HDMI cable to my 4K monitor yet because I can just plug my latop/tablet to it through USB-C & use it as a hub for USB harddrives & stuff.

USB-C don't have to be Thunderbolt to send video .

Do you guys think psvr will need a ps5? I’m assuming it will but it seems like I mostly play my ps4 for vr . Would be nice to play ps5 games on the headset only maybe with a lower rez

PS5 USB-C port might even be a USB 4.0 port with DisplayPort 2.0.

That would make sense for PSVR 2 & for external SSDs

Now that it is confirmed that the USB-C can be used for a second display I wonder if they will release cheap HMD or controllers with a display on them that use USB-C.

A cheap projector for some off screen effects would also be cool

Ok but I’m guessing if I plugged it into the USB-C port on my monitor, which acts as a second DisplayPort, nothing would happen.

I don't think they have it set up like that now but for PSVR2 it will be sending up to 4K 120fps video over USB-C
