Windows 10 is using your own bandwidth to deliver updates to others.

In order to alleviate some of the load on its servers and allow users to upgrade faster, Microsoft has introduced what it calls Windows Update Delivery Optimization, which works similar to a torrent, hosting the install files on local PCs and then propagating them to other PCs on either your local network or the internet.

The problem comes in the fact that Microsoft has enabled this option by default and that no notice is provided to customers that Windows is, in the background, using some of their bandwidth and their data for updating other users' Windows. Several web sites have already called Microsoft out for this and what they - and other consumers - find to be misallocation of their network without permission.

If you head over to the 'Updates and Security' tab in the setting page, under 'Advanced Options' you can choose how updates are delivered, which will lead you to the above page. From there, you can disable the option - in case you have a data cap - and can also alternate between allowing the PC to propagate updates to networks on the local network only or also those on the internet. The former might prove particularly useful for those households with slower internet connections as the update only needs to be downloaded on one machine and can, then, be passed on to other devices in the family without requiring too much internet bandwidth.

I noticed this a while ago when I was on the insider build and it was consuming unusually high bandwidth, but didn't know it exist in the RTM build. So you better set it off, if you don't want to hit your ISP's bandwidth cap, or slow down your internet experience in general.

The fact microsoft thinks this is "ok" is rather appalling.

Bandwidth, especially in Canada, is limited enough as it is.

The more I hear about Win10 the more I'm thinking fuck it, sticking to 7.

I'm sure there is a tonne of shit we don't know about that they infested in win10.

Hope I don't miss out on too much.

Pretty sure it asked me about this during (non-express) setup? I set mine to LAN only

I could have just stumbled on it after the fact though since I generally check out all the options

Yeah exactly. Upgrading now is silly anyway, wait 6 months or so for things to shake out at a minimum.

Thanks for the info OP. I use an internet connection with a hard 10gb per day data cap so this will kill my available bandwidth if I leave this unchecked. And no I can't switch to other ISPs since they offer either crappier bandwidth (1.5gb a day anyone?) or charge exorbitant for internet (almost 200 usd for "unlimited" internet @ 20mbps).

This is a pretty bad thing to have on by default. Personally I love the feature but I don't have any trouble with bandwidth so I forgot to think about that.

There really isn't a lot of negative stuff there wasn't there before, but a whole lot of fear-mongering when it comes to Wifi-Sense, privacy and ads.

I don't remember it, but I didn't pay too much attention.

EDIT: If two people mention it, I'll believe it, although I think it should still be turned off by default in the Express settings.

I set it to LAN, but will it work if the other computer has W10 Home Edition scheduled, while this one has the Pro version?

This is why I always wait to upgrade to anything. 10 sounds great and I'm sure I wouldn't have many issues with it, but I like to see everything shake out first. Get some "best practices guides" and then tailor it to what I want.

Besides, 8's perfectly fine for me. I'll upgrade to 10 in the next few weeks, but I can't see it giving me much that 8 hasn't already (aside from the much needed start bar)

You should set your connection to metered anyway then

Thanks for that info, turning that right off. I don't have a cap, but I don't need MS slowing my shit down.

There's no way this would blow through your bandwidth cap. Windows 8.1 received less than 1GB of updates in a year.

It could save data actually if you set it to LAN, it's just that I can't tell if it's working or not. I had one of my PCs fully updated, then installed on another one and checked for updates. Monitoring with task manager, my first PC wasn't uploading anything.

every day there's a new article about some "hidden" thing that's on by default in windows 10

microsoft is doing everything they can to kill any good will and excitement they've built up for windows 10

what the fuck is wrong with them

Hm, ok. But still, what's in it for me providing free bandwidth to MS?

Because you also receive faster updates from other users?

There is very little hidden, I can't think of anything really.

It lists all the options when you are going to use Express settings and if you go through the options yourself you see all these steps.

None of this shit is really hidden. They have been rather upfront about everything.

oh come on, you know as well as i do that if that stuff is turned on by default the majority of users are gonna just hit OK and let it go

Doesn't MS own one of the largest data centres in the world?

What the hell do they need my 1 Mbps up connection for?

On your LOCAL network right? not like I am in Kansas and the other user is in California. Even if it is internet PCs people need to learn to stop using EXPRESS install option. who does that these days? This is another one of those issues blown up as if Microsoft is pushing porn onto your hard drive. This happened with the hyperbole about Wifi sense only do we learn later that the concern was FLUFF and pure paranoia

Same old MS. The amount of privacy invasion was already enough, then wifi sense and now this crap. No wonder my laptop was lagging like crazy when it's fine on win7.

I know, that's why I kind of want it to turn off by default, but it isn't hidden at all. They can't be much clearer about any of the choices people raise concern about.

You can choose between LAN and also internet users.

Oh yeah sure, THIS must be what is causing lag. What is wrong with Wifi Sense again? Privacy invasion is just being as bad as it has always been.

Tell me. what is the case with wifi sense?

please check facts

http://money.cnn.com/2015/07/30/technology/windows10-wifi-sense/

Microsoft enables Wi-Fi Sense by default on Windows 10, but it doesn't share your networks by default. You have to actively choose to share your Wi-Fi network by clicking a box that says "Share network with my contacts" when logging in.

Well this feature helped you get your download faster so could be nice to "pay it forward".

It is pretty smart and o could see them not making this just a 'check' since there are probably a quite a few people who wouldn't understand what it is but would be fine with it of they did.

Wonder of having something like this on the PS4 would help increase download speeds? It is always on, right?

My Win 10 just automatically installed overnight on my surface pro 3 after I said to delay the update the night before. Just an FYI to those who want to try and hold off.

ElTorro

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
And I thought Microsoft had "the powa of the cloud" to implement a working CDN.
