Windows 95 running on a New Nintendo 3DS

With Bochs on PSP It took like 20 minutes to load Windows 95 and another 10 minutes for OS to respond.

I'm guessing the N3DS version will be a lot more efficient due to it's powerful CPU.

I have loads of nostalgia for Windows 95 and 98. Moreso 98.
I used to have a really crappy hand-me-down 98 computer when I was a little kid, and I'm impressed that handhelds could run this stuff now.

How much more demanding was 98 compared to 95?

Amazing feat reached here, N3DS is probably going to be great homebrew wise.

I remember that the PSP had W95 running to, but it was nearly unusable I think.

The (N)3DS scene has been growing at an exponential rate for the past two weeks. It's simply amazing.

What's also truly amazing (mindblowing, even) is the level of ignorance and outright refusal to know of some people in this thread. OK, we get it: homebrew is not worth anything for you. That's fine. Just don't downplay this achievement only because you don't find it interesting.

So does it actually "run"?

In the video I watched it didn't even make it into Windows. (although the pictures show it running)

It also took an eternity to get to scandisk.

It isn't going to run games that require 3d graphics drivers. I guess you could run games in awful software modes maybe. Nothing hardware accelerated. Unless somebody actually makes competent win95 drivers for the 3ds somehow for a fictional gpu since its in an emulated environment like you would with vmware on pc, and why bother? The OS is eating system resources and its emulating x86, ms-dos, and win95 at the same time before you even get a game going on top of that.

VMWare and Oracle VM sucks ass at games on a powerful PC as it is, how could a 3DS do anything useful?

It does run but it's of course painfully slow. Emulating x86 is no easy task and Nintendo hardware as usual isn't really powerful.

I mean the hardware is pretty much on par with that of the Windows 95 era, so...

I kid.

you may kid, but the New 3DS is actually very powerful, and has specs that put it above the Vita in the majority of areas, not least the CPU. Which is why it is so far quite simply one of the best emulation machines you can buy.

example, no other hacked handheld (including Snes9x vita in native hack mode) plays SNES games like this:

I don't think anything will beat running Doom on my 1st Gen iPod Nano. That was the epitome of "Why? Why not?" For me.

Actually, the PC version with Dolphin is the best version. No aliasing, and playing it at 4k at 60 fps.

thats still the wii version though, although yeah its the best way to play it (with the Hi Res texture pack too)

But really, I racked up near 100 hours on XB3D and I have played through XB on Wii/Dolphin numerous times - the N3DS version is really good, and amazingly out-performs the wii version in quite a few areas (no slowdown in the telethia fight in the bionis heart!!!)

AFAIK Vita isn't hacked, you can use psp hacks through psp emulation but nothing more.

you're wrong.

http://yifan.lu/2015/06/14/rejuvenate-native-homebrew-for-psvita/

Rejuvenate is a native vita based hack, accessed via the PSM exploit which Sony has patched (by removing PSM entirely). Numerous emulators have been ported to it, running natively in Vita mode. Such as this:

http://wololo.net/2015/09/14/catsfc-libretro-vita-1-1-0-a-port-of-snes9x-1-43-for-vita-released/

Even with vita native mode being utilised, N3DS still has it beat hands down.

If you have to ask "why" about something like this, then you shouldn't have even bothered clicking the thread title.

Some people do silly things for fun. Go balance a budget or write some unit tests or something.
