[Enlightenment intensifies]

I don't know much about this, but it's based on a Tezuka manga, and it has some good names attached, so it's probably at least interesting.

Gainax cashing in nostalgia? Never.

A story set on the Shikotan island after the end of WWII. Looks pretty neat. Also, potential slapkuga.

Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission
Director: Keiichiro Kawaguchi
Animation Production: Madhouse
Opening Date: 12/27
Official Site: http://www.hxh-movie.jp/index.html
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzafTryO2vQ

Presumably much better than the last anime movie to use "The Last ____" as a subtitle.

TV Line-up

Space☆Dandy
Director: Shinichiro Watanabe
Animation Production: BONES
Opening Date: 1/4
Official Site: http://www.space-dandy.com/
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoZ2udQkr3c

Watanabe is back, baby. With a huge team of talented animators and musicians working with him, expect some magic to happen. The show is airing first in America, on Toonami, so there are obviously big expectations for its reception in the west, and the budget is no doubt quite large for an anime series. This is all the anime you will need this season, might as well just stop reading now. Stop it. Stop.

Recently, My Sister is Unusual
Director: Hiroyuki Hata
Animation Production: Project No.9
Opening Date: 1/4
Official Site: http://imocyo-anime.com/
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpLDtLLWyL4

See, this is why I told you to stop.

Animation Production: Sunrise
Opening Date: 1/5
Official Site: http://buddy-complex.jp/

Opening Date: 1/8
Official Site: http://www.anime-chu-2.com/tv/
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZZgn8xNdJs

The sequel to the KyoAni series which gave us the heartwarming moral lesson that "everyone on Earth is mentally ill." How will this series top itself with contrived and childish drama this time? Don't know and don't really care because I won't be watching.

D-Frag
Director: Seiki Sugawara
Animation Production: Brains Base
Opening Date: 1/6
Official Site: http://www.d-fragments.net/

Silver Spoon

Official Site: http://www.hozukino-reitetsu.com/
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZZHTHUWcL0

A dark comedy about the King of Hell's Aide and his attempts to mediate conflicts. Looks interesting visually, but of course the main test of comedy is how funny the jokes are.

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha

A shy girl gets shape-shifting powers from a goddess. Some kind of waifu thing I guess.

Opening Date: 1/9
Official Site: http://www.dreamcreation.co.jp/stpl/ NSFW

Official Site: http://koiuta.tv/
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmI3TnFHKPo

Apparently this is a prequel to The Princess and the Pilot, a movie nobody watched besides me. It wasn't exactly a good movie, but it might have potential. Too bad all the dogfighting looks to be in ugly CGI.

So do we continue the conversation we were just having in the last thread or do we wait for the first page of a new thread shenanigans to finish first?

Might as well. I just don't see any value in a Whatever of the Year voting contest if it's just about popularity. In almost all of these types of things, the underlying aspect is quality and the evaluation of such. Like on Gaming side, GOTY looks to be TLOU despite GTAV being much more popular.

Gaming-side is a terrible role model to follow. Let's not forget one year resulted in MGS4 winning.

There are a lot of movies coming up that I'm excited for! Hunter x Hunter, Conan vs Lupin, IM@S, and Majocco. As for TV series, I'll probably give Space Dandy, Chooney, Inari, Magical Warfare, Hozuki no Retetsu, Noragami, Seitokai 2, and Sekai Serafuku. I haven't seen any PVs though so I'll probably change this up a bit.

GOTY voting is a measure of what is most popular on GAF, just as AOTY voting is a measure of what is most popular on GAF. If you don't want that, then instead of opening up the voting to all of GAF, you should keep it closed to a small number of specially selected people who are knowledgeable and discerning enough to critically analyze what they watch. That's how real awards in art and entertainment work.

It's a measure of popularity as with all voting but it's also a critical analysis of what people in general think is the best game of the year. The problem is that this isn't an anime forum. If this was Animesuki, the format wouldn't matter at all. Here you have a large contingent of people that might watch one or two animes a year if that.

It won twice for that year. Don't forget the revote. You guys picked P&Sw/G in 2010 so it's not like your record is clean too.
But PSG was the best show of 2010 sooooo.

Honestly despite all the hand-wrangling and complaining I have no issues with how the AOTY votes went down the past three years. It's all generally pretty close anyway, even Madoka didn't run away with the 2011 vote as everyone expected it to.

I guess we should just leave it to the pros at ANN.

I do wonder what compels people to vote on "___ of the year" if they only have experience with 1 or 2 titles from the medium in that time frame.

If I've only seen Attack on Titan for example, then I can certainly answer the question "did you like Attack on Titan?" but I can't say much more than that.

Can you imagine the backlash if we said one has to choose AotY from a preselected list of shows? I suppose the best thing to do is insist that one does write at least one thoughtful comment in their post for their vote to be counted. Maybe even say a minimum of two shows must be listed because at least then you can say they had to compare one show with at least one other show.

Honestly I don't even think AoT is going to be a big thing like people make it out to be. I'm sure a decent proportion of those who posted a lot in the AoT thread will not even post in the AotY thread.

Can you imagine the backlash if we said one has to choose AotY from a preselected list of shows? I suppose the best thing to do is insist that one does write at least one thoughtful comment in their post for their vote to be counted. Maybe even say a minimum of two shows must be listed because at least then you can say that had to compare one show with at least one other show.

Honestly I don't even think AoT is going to be a big thing like people make it out to be. I'm sure a decent proportion of those who posted a lot in the AoT thread will not even post in the AotY thread.
Eh.... I'll be sad no matter what wins this year.

Minimum shows is probably a bad idea just because it will result in people listing random shows or shows they've heard of. Same reason making their votes count for less if they vote for less shows is a bad idea.

Will check:
-Space Dandy
-Wizard Barristers
-Pupipo
-Hoozuki
-Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha
-Nisekoi (Have to admit this wouldn't have pinged my radar at all if SHAFT wasn't attached)
-Nobunaga the Fool
-Nobunagun
-Sekai Seifuku ~ Bōryaku no Zvezda
-Tonari no Seki-kun

Not planning on sticking with all of these, but these're the ones that have me interested enough to at least sample.
