Akuma no Riddle 1

Yawn. Sort-of. Everything is so heavily telegraphed and poorly written that it undermines the effective tension building that the rest of the production manages (despite the over-saturation of the light in several scenes). None of the characters behave or speak in ways that actual human beings do, but the show is played so deadly straight that you're obliged to try and take them seriously

While I am genuinely curious as to why Haru should be assassinated - other than for referring to herself in the third person all the time - I have no intention of sticking around to find out. Another anime to watch on Wikipedia when it's done, then!

Mushishi Zoku-shou 2

An assy parent who actually has a reasonable justification for his actions and ultimately repents his selfishness to do the right thing for his child
? Is this really Mushishi? =p

Seriously, though, great low-key episode. Simple human drama at its best.

Well, funnily enough, Smile doesn't seem to be particularly competitive, although Peco obviously is.

But that's not really my point, of course people who play a particular sport seriously will need to train and they need to have ambition to want to do better. But formula dictates that your sports shounen series must start in the first episode with a character who has Big Dreams (usually complete with vision of them competing in a major, end of series event in a large venue) but little actual skill in their chosen field. You'll also notice that our lead is plucky and likeable with a a good heart and lots of enthusiasm to do better, they display great sporstmanship as well, but they're probably not that bright. Through Hard Work and Training Montages they will overcome their early deficiencies and surprise other players in said sport because, even though they're merely a novice, they some how have some Talent that sets them apart from the rest. They'll then engage in a big First Test of their talent that they might win or lose but it doesn't matter because they've done enough to impress the Coach/Captain and get them into the Team. Their teammates will be mostly likeable, although their may still be doubted they have to win over. They'll probably have also earned a Rival whose more experienced at the sport but can see their Raw Talent. From then on it's off to the races as they find challenges to over come and best, although they'll probably Lose Big early on to allow us to see that they aren't completely invincible. This is pretty much how your first few episodes are supposed to go. It's all extremely generic.

Now, in Ping Pong, we apparently have two main characters, which is already a little weird. Smile is aloof and uncaring, with no apparent desire to play competitively. Peco is very competitive, but he doesn't seem to take the sport too seriously and he even plays for cash against weaker players and has no sense of sportsmanship. He and Smile have a weird relationship where they seem to be friends who share no affection for one another, except that Smile is secretly losing to Peco so as not to damage Peco's pride. More over, both Peco and Smile are both pretty good at Ping Pong already and so there's no room for the traditional novice to pro arc that nearly all spots shows are based around.

Fundamentally, the focus on the show is actually on the characters and how they interact rather than solely on the sport itself. In every other show the characters usually just exist to play the sport OR to find a girl in their spare time.
Sadly, while your paragraph pretty much describes Aim for the Ace, I love that show unconditionally.

I think it's trying to carefully maintain that balance, where the sport is used to help bring out some specific trait about the character rather than the other way around. Like, since the main characters are experts at Ping Pong, we don't need to take the time time having the character learn the rules of Tennis in order to show his studiousness.
Since Peco and Smile already have an established relationship, we don't need the hotblooded bonding arc that brings two disparate forces together for a common goal. Yeah, all the main characters seem to be antagonistic with the rest of the secondary characters, but it's not necessarily an exercise in manly bonding and future understanding.

One Week Friends 2

Ugggggggggh all this sweet sugar

What a sweet episode. Hase is such a wimpy protagonist but the fact he understand Fuyimiya's feelings and asks for forgiveness, not to mention how hard he tries even when he embarrasses himself, it's almost manly. In fact manlier than many other protagonist who don't get girls.

So the diary
only worked in the same sense as 50 First Dates. She can read details but won't remember feelings

Though I guess I still have an issue with this amnesia as it seems too... broad? Like 7 days is fine but it shouldn't be 7 days POOF gone. It should be like short-term memory doesn't last more than 7 days at a time, so once 8 days pass she forgets the day before. But then again I guess it wouldn't be as dramatic if it were like that.

"Commander is there a specific a reason we do these things to this particular homo sapien from earth every seven earth calendar days? What do we gain from this? Isn't it kind of, as earthlings would put it, mean spirited?"

"Silence underling! We do this for reasons that are outside of your comprehension. Which I shall now explain and you will easily comprehend. We do this because Fujimiya is actually... THE SPAWN OF SATAN. If we don't do this every 7 days only the earthling Hase will be able to stop her with the angel's sword."

Naah, One Week Friends is just a prequel to One Week Hero (also known as 7-Day Hero, and Hero 7). They'll start developing the actual game when Marvelous Entertainment becomes a AAA studio.

The evil overlords needed a lot of research&development to make the world destruction spell work in 30 seconds.

Date A Live II 1

Yaaaaay, feels good to have this show's mindless, occasionally-lewd fun back. (Dat toilet scene, Origami delivering the fanservice goods. I knew she was good for something.)

This episode served as an effective reminder of where we left off, which was just as well since my memory was a little fuzzy on the details. It also served as an effective warning on the potentially catastrophic dangers of DORAMAS. I hope everyone feels educated.

Brynhildir In The Darkness 2

Lol this show really doesn't know what it wants to be. Like we have this messed up Wizard of Oz-like murder and then next scene it's all

"U GAIS. I BROUGHT CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE YO!"

Girls: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW SHIT SON CAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE WHAT WHAT.

Except for the paralyzed girl. She's going to be used so much for the [intensifies] gifs. like

[freaks out about cake internally] lol. I'm looking forward to those. Also most hilarious reaction to not having cake

"We'll save this cake for tomorrow"

guy: Actually that slice is for me.

*girl looks at him shocked. Starts crying*

Who wrote this? A comedic genius?

Speaking of the girl, who knew they made a voice synthesizer that sounded tsundere. Besides those comments the show jumps from light hearted conversations, to dark discussions, to semi-harem humor and finally to school stuff. Fucking decide what you want to be. I'm still entertained I guess I'll keep watching.

Atelier Escha and Logy 1

"There's another reason why our settlement is so prosperous."
"Oh, what's that?"
"The completely inaccessible floating ruins that can therefore contribute nothing to our economy or ecosystem, of course."

Maybe they're a tourist attraction from the ground?

Harmless fluff, insubstantial and mildly diverting but devoid of drama (not as in melodrama, but as in things happening!) for the time being. I suppose it's pleasant enough, and at least it's not amping up the moe which was the reason I stopped playing the only Atelier game I've tried.

The more you guys overthink amnesia in media, especially that where little to no research was done and it's used for the major drama, the more you'll get stressed out. You'll have to suspend your disbelief in this case. I also have issues with OWF due to the '7 days and reset' mentality. At least in 50 First Dates they could BS how her falling asleep and having her brain rest has something to do with it. In here there's no excuse. But if you overthink it you'll just start to nitpick issues that the author clearly doesn't care about. Maybe he/she cares enough to give a brief explanation, but the why or the how is not what matters for this. It's the what of the current situation.

I know it's a nerd thing to nitpick films/shows until you can't enjoy them anymore. But because of my ability to just say "ok fuck it" I've gone on to enjoy films that many nerds nitpicked until they hated them. Such as Source Code (which if you haven't seen Moon you should, same director and one of my fav sci fi films), and Prometheus. The latter being the most well known example.

If you want a film where nitpicking is close to impossible since most people are left confused, watch Primer.

I do think a key point to remember is whether or not it actually creates an interesting scenario to follow. The worst offenses are those that are just stupid and either don't need to be or don't do anything interesting enough to balance out however wrong it really is. Something like the Core seems a great example of that, while the premise of suffering amnesia and keeping a journal to try to follow what you'd been doing is more a novel premise.

Fairy Tail OVA 01

Lewd. Not the lewdest anime ever, not by a wide margin, but with the broadcast TV restrictions removed, there was a lot more nudity for both sides. The ending was pretty heartwarming, all things considered, and seeing all the various rooms for the girls was a nice bit of building for them. That Juvia only had one Gray doll in her room is surprisingly restrained. Maybe there's more in the closet.

Fairy Tail OVA 02

I've always sort of liked reimaginings that take a fantastic world and put it in a more mundane setting. As mundane as Fairy Tail can get. The various jokes and callbacks were a nice bit of fanservice in their own way, and the pace was quick. I'm also liking the OVA OP and ED, being sung by the cast members. It's a nice change of pace from the bigger name musicians on the main series.

Fairy Tail OVA 03

Tiiiiiiiiiiiime looooooop. The least fanservicey of the three, and even then, it still had Lucy in a bunny girl outfit. So the reason Lucy joined Fairy Tail was because of herself. The younger guild members were cute, and again, so much callbacks and jokes about the future. All three of these were about what I'd expect from OVAs - fanservice of both kinds.

A lesson we can all learn.

If the author doesn't care enough, why should we? This is one of those moments where I'm going to have to pull a bit of a firehawk, and ask that the author just be honest. Key shows may be ridiculous, but at least the supernatural is an accepted part of their stories, such that mysterious unspecified diseases and psychological disorders don't need any extra suspension of disbelief beyond that required to accept the idea of little girls saying things like gao and uguu. One Week Friends presents itself as being at least somewhat grounded in reality so it's harder to take the inconsistencies.

50 First Dates' premise makes much more sense to me, for some reason. A memory reset every day when you fall asleep seems somehow more plausible than a very selective memory reset every calendar week!

I know it's a nerd thing to nitpick films/shows until you can't enjoy them anymore. Prometheus isn't nitpicking, it's like potholing :p (and I quite like the film!) Also Source Code is fun.

As far as One Week Friends goes, it's completely ridiculous, but it's also upfront about what the show is about, and it plays the situation off well. The selective amnesia doesn't really make logical sense, but I'm okay with it in service of a good story. I think the most important thing is that a story stick consistently to its own rules, even if those rules don't necessarily follow the rules of the real world.

Thoughts during episode:

- Lol. I love this set up. I don't care about this locket and the keys. Doesn't matter to me anymore. This set up is just too funny.
- Hahaha. He just "forgot".
- Teacher-sama is awesome.
- Transfer student! Oh boy here it comes. Onodera 4 Life!!!
- Her name is Tachibana? Never mind, she shares a name with a main character from Angel Beats. She may prove to be competitive yet...
- LOL. Onodera and Ruri's reaction along with Shu and the class was hysterical.
- HAHAHAHAHA!
- Still love this opening!
- She's adorable.
- Chitoge's reaction. Lol.
- Shu you sly dog.
- Lol Onodera. You can't lose. Have faith!
- Oh snap. That was kind of cold.
- I watch this show for the classes reactions. Hahahaha.
- AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA. I like this Tachibana girl. Burn!!!! Take that Chitoge!!
- What!!! Hahahaha.
- Shu's face during this whole ordeal is amazing. :3
- She's lying. There was a moment of hesitation on her end. I don't think she is the one he made the promise to. This must be a red herring.
- This show is just too good. I like this Tachibana girl.
- Yup that just happened. Why do
all these girls have keys
?!
- No show!! Don't try now to get me to like Chitoge. It's too late. It's all about Onodera and Tachibana.
- Onodera is being pushed off to the side this episode. I don't like it.
- Lol. Everyone
is spying
.
- HAHAHAHA. They didn't recognize
Tsun and Chitoge got stopped by the police
. This episode is too much.
- Hehehehehe.
- Well she dropped a little in my eyes. Seems like Onodera is the only real angel of this group. Team Onodera!
- Marie? What? Seems he figured something out.

Summary:

So yeah this was a highly entertaining episode while I was having a million and a half things fly through my head as I watched. It's a curse really. Tachibana seemed super sweet and cute who taunted Chitoge which made me like her up until the last scene and now I am totally solidified in my choice. Team Onodera 4 Life!!!

One Week Friends presents itself as being at least somewhat grounded in reality so it's harder to take the inconsistencies.
Is it that hard? I generally just accept the premise of any given show at face value, I don't see how one could give anything a fair chance otherwise. A well-written story will take into account what its premise might imply for the interactions and development of the characters, and I don't think that's been slighted by the two episodes of One Week Friends that have aired so far. I think it's fairly clear that the premise is something the viewer is asked to just accept, and the story itself will tend more to thematic treatment and character development, building from that framing device the premise gives.

I mean it's understandable to be bothered with how conveniently inconvenient the whole mechanic seems, but if the author is designing the premise that way I'll assume it's to the benefit of the story he has in mind, at least until there's something in the show which contradicts that. I don't think it's dishonest or any different from the Key dramas, other than the fact it has a more subdued tone and dialogue.
