Witcher Netflix show - First look at Nilfgaardian armor and weapon (Update: Cavill as Geralt)

Why would a common soldier armor be CGI? This isn't a super high tech armor.
Have you seen some of the basic stuff that gets done in CGI these days?
For example, why would they add fire in CGI rather than just light some fires on set?

At 0:25 from what is apparently footage from The Witcher Netflix series, they even CGI an emblem on a soldier's shield. They CGI shit everywhere these days.

Because having your entire set on fire sounds kinda dangerous lol.

I'm sorry but using CGI to do a common foot soldier armor just doesn't make much sense to me. It also doesn't explain why they're so hideous in the first place.

Blimey you can tell there's no weaponry experts in here. Bunch of nerds. Typical Gaf.

It's obviously Zimmerit plate armour innit! The magnetic mines will just slide right off.

Cost to fully design armor for a number of foot soldiers versus something they can CGI on? Comfort of the actor? Mobility? None of those reasons come to mind when you think why a studio would use CGI?

A lot of stuff that comes out of this series so far seems terrible, but against all hope I keep on trucking. I will hold my judgement untill I see the entire damn show.

Why would you think a good looking armor can't be confortable?

I'm not too fussy. Some of the armour in GOT was fucking awful tbh. I'm more interested in the show overall. Will reserve judgement until then.

I want this show to be good but stuff like this makes it seem like someone at Netflix was like "we want something like GOT......... for a tenth of the price"

I only ever read the first book and it has been a while. But I'm pretty sure no one in it was described as having some sort of armour with a scrotum inspired design.

I wouldn't be surprised if the author asked them to make the show look as different to the games as possible (since he hates them) and "different" armour designs is one of the ways they are trying to do that.

The only thing I can recall is that they are described as having black armor with a cloak and helmets bearing black feathers. Sapkowski usually doesn't go into crazy minute details about each and every part of outfits; he'll mention a few key parts that stand out and allow the reader to fill in the rest (which is normal). I flipped through some of my books to moments where I recall Nilfgaardians showing up and it's as specific as I just described.

However there is a moment where a character has a nightmarish vision of some Nilfgaardian soldiers, so it's totally possible that these screenshots are from that nightmare sequence, where they are meant to look warped and disfigured.

Did a search and didn't find it posted already. Doesn't look too bad, we don't see the other sword and the medallion frankly looks like shit. Rest is ok. But I personally don't see Cavill in this role.

The two swords thing was created for the games.

"I believe in the sword. As you can see, I carry two. Every witcher does. It's said, spitefully, the silver one is for monsters and the iron for humans. But that's wrong. As there are monsters which can be struck down only with a silver blade, so there are those for whom iron is lethal. And lola, not just any iron, it must come from a meteorite." -The Last Wish

I heard the maker was also directing the new netflix series about.

Iron man, wonder woman and dragonball z.

First pictures of it.

They made freeza black tho, #resistnazi's.

lmao well shit. I really need to re-read these.

Especially Last Wish. I really loved the anthology format.

I don't see enough *resting bitch face Yen* in Anya Chalotra. Need to see her in motion, maybe she is a really good actress. Ciri is a total miscast though.

Yennefer looks absolutely horrible (as a casting choice), Geralt on the other hand looks pretty cool.

She looks like she works at a supermarket. I'm not saying she's ugly at all, but the point is that sorceresses are all supposed to be stupid hot by their own making. Hell, I remember one of them was missing like half a jaw or something and covered it up with a glamor, if I'm not mistaken.

Up up and go away.
Not sure if he's the right actor for Geralt but will be interesting to see what comes of this, hey it could be good or bad will wait to judge when I see it myself.
He looks nothing like Geralt.

Welp. Have to admit that Cavill looks cool as Geralt. After the ballsack armor debacle I was starting lose faith in Netflix could do The Witcher justice. Guess they listened after the horrid screentest reveal of him last year and made him look better at least.

Not sold on Yen and Ciri though. I agree with everyone here that a sorceress should be stupidly hot and Anya Charlota, while attractive herself, is not a head turner like Eva Green (my first choice for the role).

And of course, lets not forget the fact a woman of Indian ethnicity is playing character who's described as white and pale. If you think my opinion doesn't matter because I'm some salty white guy. Fuck you. I'm not white, and I hate it when people force so called 'diversity' into media that don't require it.

Freya Allen I thought was a good casting choice for Ciri. Buf by God, what's with that outfit they put her in? Also her makeup looks awful. Hope they do better in the future.

I'm still reserving judgement on this show. Hopefully Netflix doesn't fuck it up.

Why DIDN'T they cast Eva Green, such a missed opportunity - she would have been perfect as Yennefer.

I mean, Anya's alright, but as others have said she has no wow effect going for her.

yeah this looks horribly miscast, almost like thrones seemed to be with its failed pilot

agree with most who say they should have thrown buckets of money at eva green for yen

Still need to see Commander Ballsack in action. Cast diversified. Yea...
Not hyped at all. More like horror incoming.

Edit Omg Eva Green instant yes.

The rational part of me thinks that they asked already and she probably turned them down. Maybe she didn't want to do another fantasy show after Camelot and Penny Dreadful.

The irrational part of me thinks that Netflix has once again succumbed to 'social justice' and cast a woman of color in one of the main roles. If people think me crazy, look at the actress they cast for Fringilla Vigo.

I think Ciri is actually cast well same as Yennefer.

CDPR oversexualized both Ciri and Yennefer giving them lady look where in books they looked quite different.

Book Yennefer was described as very young woman, small breast and quite short. Netfix actress fits that really well. In books it was assumed that Yennefer was looking younger than Triss.
Book Ciri was described as normal looking girl that looked more like dryad (very lean). Actress almost ideally fits it.
CDPR only got Tris right. But they fucked up with her showing cleavage where in books clearly she was scared and she outright said she won't ever wear any clothes with cleavage due to this.

Hope both are great actresses because Geralt role is preatty easy while both Ciri and Yen role is very hard to pull it off. Especially Ciri considering this young actress. Hope she will give it all because Rats arc if it will be ever recorded will be one of ways for her to go big.

He never wore two swords. His silver sword was mostly for special occasions. Other poster said it right. It was mostly for games as TW1 didn't have roach so unpacking and packing silver sword would be really annoying. Which is also reason why i like W3EE mod for TW3 as it makes silver swords as tools for specific situations rather than like vanilla "everything not human even fucking wolves."

Yeah, Eva Green would've been a perfect choice (she was awesome in Camelot), but I didn't have hopes for hiring her since this is a Netflix show.

Ciri is ok for a younger version.

Yennifer looks kind of bad, something seems off.

People really need to get the games out of their fucking heads. This will have nothing to do with them as has been said numerous times. Even the author hates the games (I love the games).
Ciri looks perfect to be honest. She is a girl as she is supposed to be. Yen looks good too in my opinion.
If you consider yourself fans, take time to experience the books. You can even find the audiobooks on youtube.

He looks a bit to good for someone who has been fighting monster for 80 years+.

Also, that superhero jawline just looks wrong on a dark fantasy hero like Gerald. Wasn't he also specifically described in the books as 'cat like'?
