Ya. Foreign exchange is pretty unfavorable at the moment.

Avatar would be around $2.325B with today's foreign exhange rates. Even if you want to count ticket inflation, it would drop from its 2010 total.

And even $2.325b is still pants-on-head crazy. Nothing's touching that for 5 years either.

Will 2017 be the year in which a box-office thread about Star Wars doesn't turn into a meditation on the longevity and/or consumer appeal of Avatar sequels?

No.

No it won't.
The only year that will stop is when Avatar 2 releases. And no matter how that plays out, there will be crow threads and lots of pettiness thrown around from both sides.

I'm still clinging to my fanboy fantasy of George Miller's Mad Max Fury Road lighting a serious fire under Cameron's ass and him feeling more than ever that he has something to prove. A hungry Cameron is not someone to fuck with when it comes to action.
I hope Cameron delivers something fucking insane in the sequel. After all, he is a strong 2 for 2 with sequels. He can pull off the hat trick.

Avatar made $1b in three weeks
. With an opening weekend of $77m in the US.
Christ. That puts things in perspective.

I don't know that we're still in the timeline where things that should happen are allowed to still happen anymore.
Cameron will right the world from Trump's wrongs.
Having said that, the Cameron now is very different than the mid 80s-early 90s Cameron. He isn't as lean and mean. But, he is more experienced.

Rogue One's performance is actually pretty much where I expect Avatar 2 to land domestically. Roughly double the OW of the first and falling $200-250M short of the total.

Don't really know how it'll perform overseas, but I would assume gangbusters. China should be a new record for a foreign release, no?

Cameron's probably looking at those previous records and thinking:
"Those are some cute box office records. It would be a shame if someone were to...break them."

Meanwhile, he knows he ain't touching that opening weekend of TFA.
I've almost kinda missed the reverent, almost theological tones by which people talk about James Cameron here!
The man has crushed all expectations with his last two films.

Of course, that means his fall will be twice is hard.

Maybe it's because I'm on my second bomber for the night, but by the time we get around to that film releasing, this might be completely plausible.
Depends on what the bomber is. Downed a bomber of St. Bernardus Abt 12, then half a bottle of champagne. Now onto the bourbon...

Does anybody know who Sam Worthington is anymore?

no one remembered avatar a year after it came out, let alone 9 years

I really, really think the novelty of 3D was the main reason why avatar did so well. people aren't craving an avatar 2.

even that piece of shit alice in wonderland that was quickly converted to 3d to capitalize on the fad made a billion in 2010. the sequel came out in 2016 and was a fucking bomba. cause no one actually gave a fuck about the first movie, they just wanted to see shit in 3d.

no one cares about avatar 2 9 years later. without a gimmick that raises the ticket prices, I don't see it doing over a billion.

2017 will see a heartfelt "Hell or High Water" esque outback western starring Worthington and Jai Courtney, directed by Andrew Dominik, and people will swear up and down that they always loved both those guys.
People already tried that with Courtney based on the Suicide Squad trailer. May have been premature in that case.

Every Cameron film should be accompanied by a behind-the-scenes documentary. Would be so interesting to see. Would love to see the thought process behind making a $200m big boat movie in the wake of Waterworld.

Anyway, it seems that people who are betting against Avatar 2 hitting $1b didn't have the internet in 2009. Even after opening weekend, there was plenty of doubt. The word "flop" appeared in several headlines.

Here's a more sensible one that was still way off:
Could Avatar hit $1 billion? (Dec 20, 2009)
Gosh, it may even make $500 overseas.

Articles before the opening weekend were even better though.

Will Avatar Be a Megaflop? (Nov 11, 2009)
[No] matter what happens with Avatar's ticket-sales, the movie won't financially ruin parent studio 20th Century Fox for two main reasons. 1.) The studio has split the cost with a variety of other investors and 2.) It has a generous cushion provided by the near-certain popularity of the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel hitting theaters on Christmas Day.
LOL.

And people "talking" about Avatar won't matter any more in 2018 than it did in 2009.

Edit: Wtf Bobby banned? Self-requested ban I'm assuming? That sucks.

I should clarify I have absolutely no idea why they were banned but that post made me laugh and was the only snipey interaction I saw between them.

I think they got banned cause that fuckery they were doing in the Sculli thread dragged into the Carrie Fisher insurance thread...and names were called.

It got really chippy in there.
