Best of both worlds doesn't really count, since tickets were selling at a large premium over what was the typical movie price, even in 3D. They sold it as a movie concert rather than a concert movie to justify charging $15-20 a ticket.
ah I see, shady shit

Y'all giving definitive statements about what is going to transpire in the boxoffice this year should check last year's threads.

WE ALL GOT CLOCKED.

Of course it did, it was a semi sequel conclusion to a 20 year old series. There wasn't much left to do even if it was huge.

Which was the director's and producer's fault. They chose that direction for the new film, instead of doing what they're doing now. The Man of Steel is what SHOULD have happened back in 2006.

People saying WB is sad? they didn't even need DC movies again besides Batman until just recently.
TDK & TDKR each did better than multiple Marvel movies combined.
and thats not even counting them having Harry Potter. Now that its over they do need MOS to preform well, and its looking like it will.
If not, then yes they are in huge trouble.

And the Avengers did better than both TDK and TDKR.

No one is saying WB is sad. People are saying that DC is sad. DC should be pumping out movies like Marvel is doing. Iron Man, Spider Man, Thor, Captain America, Wolverine, X-Men, and the Avengers are all flying high, and DC is still trying to get their guys off the ground.

It's too much of a gamble. It could either be bigger than Avatar (with China maybe taking a bigger role), or maybe the name has been tainted, in which case it will make tons of money, but not another 2 billion+.

Agreed. But to say it will make less than half (1.39b) is kind of silly given it's Avatar and that the international markets have exploded since then. I actually find it hilarious that if Avatar 2 were to gross $1.5b it would be considered disappointing.

Ya, overseas is pretty indiscriminant when it comes to their blockbusters as well. Even Wrath of the Titans grossed 67% of the original overseas. The Mummy: Dragon Emporer was the highest grossing film in the series overseas. No way Avatar 2 drops more than 30-40% overseas even if it is a disappointment. Domestic a bigger mystery. A $300M drop domestically wouldn't be completely out of the question.

Crazy how things change. I remember when TDK was about to come out, they were saying its going to bitchslap Iron mans BO and it did. If you were to tell me IM3 would eclipse TDKR BO in 2008 I would have laughed at you.

It makes me wonder how TDK would do today with a 3d tax on top.

well tdkr sucks. and iron man 3 deserves to eclipse it.

tdk would have done really well today still I think. it was just a much more compelling superhero film than we've got for the last 5-6 years. and i'm sure audiences made sure other people were aware of that

About $1.25b as opposed to the $1b it made. 3D tickets are about 30% more at most and assume that 70% of audiences will watch in 3D.

TDK sold 74,455,400 tickets in comparison to Avengers 76,768,200 tickets. Gives you a clue on how well it would do in 2013 with 3D.

Both numbers are domestic.

how big of a boost will avengers really be for thor 2 and cap 2 though?

correct me if I'm wrong but audiences probably left the theater with more interest in tony stark and hulk more than anyone else

edit: i'm prolly just projecting though

I wonder how Begins would do these days.

Good for Mud, I hope it has some legs. It is much more mainstream and entertaining then the marketing would let on.

Marvel is fucking Kiling it yall

Guardians of the Galaxy feels like the surprise hit/dark horse of phase 2. I REALLY feel good about it.
Ant Man seems like it could do a mix of Cap Am and Thor in sales/reception.....

However
Black Panther is the one that I'm kind of weary about. It literally has to be 8/10 and higher type of good for it to sell well and be received. Like Directors and Cast have to be in sync with each other on that one. It will be hard selling a remote African country to people in America let alone people over seas.

Isn't that on Warner Bros too? You can't indict one and take the other off the hook.

Warner Brothers has owned DC for I think 40 years? DC never had their own studio to focus on movies like Marvel did.

DC doesn't have a movie studio dedicated to making DC movies. And they don't have a Kevin Feige either to run it.

The only thing holding Black Panther back from mega sucess is the actor being black.

The reasons for this should be obvious.

Sad thing for DC is if they ever get off the ground it will probably happen after superhero fatigue has kicked in and people wont give a shit. Until then Keep them coming Marvel

Blade was for the most part the beginning of this whole super hero thing. For me the problem with Black Panther, is that I have no idea who that is, but if they made an awesome movie I think people would embrace it. The reasoning for this is not obvious. Plus Blade was not exactly a well known character either. They made a good movie, which turned into a trilogy, and people went and saw it. This racial bull shit is silly.

I'm surprised people didn't see IM3 being big. People like RDJ. The Avengers was fucking huge. RDJ is great as Tony Stark. The casting was perfect. Its going to be really hard to find someone to fill his shoes.

Pain and Gain is good. The Rock is great in it.

I am not sure who those people were who thought IM3 would not be huge.. I could see if maybe it had super terrible reviews, but even then it was going to pull a Transformers.

The problem with Black Panther is the name. It will be an issue in America.

I don't know how it can be any harder to sell black panther's universe then it is to sell thor's. It is a freaking fantasy you put a story in front of a person long enough and they will believe it or anything really.

You can't do straight up conversion like that for overseas totals. GBP was sitting at ~$2.00 USD when TDK was released vs ~$1.55 today. The Euro was also higher. That would have cancelled out some of the difference, being TDK's strongest markets. A lot of other factors play into a movie's success. Especially in key territories like China where the movie market is artificially manipulated by the government to favour domestic films.

The problem with Black Panther is the name. It will be an issue in America.

No it won't the only people that will have an issue with the name is old racist people, everyone else will think it's a cool name especially the target demo of 18-40 or whatever it is.

White audiences have a habit of avoiding "black movies." Marketing Black Panther the wrong way could ensure it has the box office gross of a spike lee joint or tyler perry flick.

The Blade movies did a very good job of positioning a Black Hero at the center of a franchise, and it's likely BP will take cues from that.

You underestimate how kids are a huge base for Marvel movies and the name might turn parents off.

The "black" movies from the past were clearly targeted to black audiences, obviously black panther won't. I expect it to be treated like every other action/adventure movie that has a main black character. People just overreact to the label of black movie those movie executives included.

yeah, right wing american conservatives have an EXTREMELY negative reaction to the Black Panther movement/party, and equate them as the black version of the KKK for some reason. I've had some VERY "interesting" conversations with working class white males of my age about this one- it's very eye opening.

This is the problem. There is a very short list of black actors that can carry a movie solo that will appeal to white audiences. Will smith is notable because he's one of the few that can pull this off- Denzel and Jamie Foxx are right behind him, though Denzel is a dramatic actor- and all three are WAY out of the price range of a BP movie.

I'd be willing to bet that Avatar 2 makes $500 million domestically instead of like the one trillion i made last time, because I do believe a great great many people saw the movie and were left thoroughly disappointed. Anecdotal story, naturally, but still: every single person I saw the movie with left disappointed. So we'll see.

I think you are overestimating just my opinion though. You don't hear the term black panther negatively outside of every 4 years when fox news has to harp on black panther intimidating people. I just really don't see the problem with it especially since it will be tied to the eventual trailers which will obviously make him look cool, nice or whatever.
