Halim Solmaz, a resident of Diyarbakır’s Beşiri district, is purportedly 125 years old, which if true would make her the oldest known person on the face of the earth.

İrfan Ertaş, the head of the local birth registry directorate, confirms the record of Solmaz’s age, saying: “According to our records Halim Solmaz was born in 1884 and is still alive. She lives in [Beşiri’s] Bismil [neighborhood].” Solmaz’s identification card says she was born on July 1, 1884, and according to reports she had seven children (four sons and three daughters) and is grandmother to 54 and great-grandmother to 150.

Mehmet Beşir Solmaz, a grandchild of Halim Solmaz, translated his grandmother’s comments from Kurdish to Turkish in an interview with the Anatolia news agency. Solmaz explains that she married twice, losing her first husband after three years of marriage during World War I. She then married Şemsettin Solmaz and moved with him to the province of Siirt.

Her grandson explains: “My grandma is 125 years old and is now beginning to have difficulty speaking and moving around. My mother looks after her. My grandma and grandpa moved to a village in Siirt’s Kurtalan district following the 1917 Russian Revolution and stayed there for some time. Of course, they had a very difficult life. For example, they lived in what in those days could be considered a cave. They also saw famine at some times.

“Later they moved to Bismil with my father, who is an imam. That was about 20 years ago. Our family lives across Siirt, Batman and Diyarbakır. My grandma has 54 grandchildren from her seven children, and nearly 150 great-grandchildren. She also has great-great-grandchildren, but I don’t know the exact number,” he said.

Offered ayran to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

Halim Solmaz explained through her grandson that she remembers when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, visited the Kurtulan district long ago and also came to the village where she lived. She said Atatürk arrived at the village on horseback and that her relatives greeted him, and that she personally offered him and his comrades ayran. “Atatürk had blue eyes and was very handsome. He got on a horse and was accompanied by cavalrymen,” she said.

Her grandson explains that there has also been loss in Halim Solmaz’s long life; three of her children have passed away. “My grandmother and grandfather were married for 60 years; my grandfather passed away in 1972. When my grandmother has enough energy to speak, she often says, ‘If only I had died, enough already, I’ve lived a long time.’ She eats yogurt more than anything else. In the past she always used to eat butter as well. She has no chronic illnesses, but due to her advanced age she depends on us for her care. I think my grandma is the oldest person in the world,” he said.

Mehmet Beşir Solmaz’s mother, Selime Solmaz, also spoke to the Anatolia news agency through her son’s translation, explaining that she has lived in the same home as her mother-in-law for 40 years and is her primary caregiver. “For the past 40 years she has been blind. I take care of everything from her toilette to her food. Sometimes she says to me, ‘Husbands used to beat their spouses; brides these days are very lucky because their husbands don’t beat them.’ Due to her age sometimes she forgets even to eat and drink unless she’s reminded,” she explains.

While I do not think I'd like to live that long I think it is pretty cool to have been alive during three fucking centuries.

because it makes it sound like she doesn't want to live, but she's been stuck.

how must that african guy feel who (and several other persons) claims that he is 151 years old then?

I cannot begin to imagine what this woman must be feeling. I'm sure I'll never have to worry about it though.

That's pretty cool.

For youths this era, living 120+ years into the future would certainly be interesting to say the least.

they much feel pretty shitty with themselves. living a life of lie.

well, he does live in a mountain area where "over 100 years people" are as common as 60 years olds in a west european country. maybe it's true

Turkey represent!

My mother is Turkish and she eats just about every weird shit you can think of. She does love some Greek yogurt with garlic in it, alongside French bread with Irish butter on. Oh and then there's the Greek olives. :lol

This last part really stood out for me. I just feel that we know very little about the region, and it's people. Stuff like that makes me wonder about how it really was back then in the Middle east.

I remember her mentioning that he was an unkempt, and unpleasent man to be around. I couldn't help laughing when I read that a while ago.

:lol

She was blind for the past 40 years.

125 years though - that is amazing, and also slightly depressing at the same time - I would personally prefer to live up to 70 years old.

This part is also mindblowing
In 1965, aged 90, with no living heirs, Calment signed a deal to sell her former apartment to lawyer André-François Raffray, on a contingency contract. Raffray, then aged 47, agreed to pay her a monthly sum of 2,500 francs until she died, an agreement sometimes called a "reverse mortgage". Raffray ended up paying Calment more than the equivalent of $180,000, which was more than double the apartment's value. After Raffray's death from cancer at the age of 77, in 1995, his widow continued the payments until Calment's death.[1]
That lawyer must have been really upset :lol

She's going to need quite a lot of evidence if she wants to be certified by Guinness World Records. There are lots of phony longevity claims in third-world countries (does Turkey count?) but I hope this one has a chance to be true. It's fascinating to imagine how long humans can live.

well that's depressing.
My great grandmother lived to be over 100 years old and she used to say something similar. Just imagine living to be that age and watching everyone and everything you know disappear.

I wouldn't really call Turkey a third-world country.

will gently cradle you as time slowly ticks away.
I'd really like to live past 110 years old. Simply so that when the news reporters jokingly ask me "what's your secret to long life lol?" I could respond "fucking Asian girls, eating bacon sandwiches and voting Socialist."

Yeah, being the oldest person or oldest vet or whatever would be AWESOME for me because if I still had my sanity I would use it as an excuse to be batshit crazy and regularly lie to reporters, make up shit about dead people that can't be verified. Oh man, that would be great.

these are the weird guys from that african mountain village with hundrets of over 100years old people:
in an interview Gamanda Gole said "I'm the oldest man on earth" and claims to be 151 years old. He continues "believe it or not, I remember when Menelik II became emperor". Menelik became emperor in 1889, that's 119 years ago.

Dakeba Tufa("My name is Dakeba Tufa and I am 125 years old") is from the same village as Gamanda and claims to be 125 years old. He is married to a 60year old woman. His exwife is 105 and lives further up in the Duro mountains.

It is true that the Shashemene region in a mountain area in Ethiopia is the place with the most old people on earth. Nowhere else are as many over 100 year olds as here.

I think the yoghurt is more to do with how old her digestive system is, and that its probably one of the only things she can deal with, rather than a miracle food that will grant you longevity :lol

It's home to people who claim to be that old to garner respect.
