ever since we realized that releasing world of goo as a wii retail game in europe is unfair to those on the other side of the atlantic, we’ve been in discussions with our european publisher about how to make things right.

today, we’re happy to announce that world of goo will be coming to wiiware in europe after all! we’ve started the submission process and hope to release it sometime in december. we’d like to thank our publisher, RTL Games, for being flexible and working with us on this course correction.

we’re anticipating some questions about this, so let’s try to answer them:

Q: how much will world of goo cost on wiiware in europe?
A: most likely the same as in the americas: 1500 points.

Q: will the pc version be available in europe too?
A: yes, at the same time as the retail release, hopefully late december. it will cost 19.99 euros and will be available in retail stores (to be announced), through steam and other digital downloads services, and on amazon.de (an incorrect price is currently listed).

Q: will there be an extra chapter for europe?
A: no. everyone will get the same version of the game.

Q: why are they not available now?
A: we need to put the final touches on translations, get european age ratings, and go through nintendo’s approval process. the retail pc version also needs to get manufactured and shipped to retail stores.

Q: i am european and i am still angry with you.

Great! Now I will buy it. I would not have spent EUR 40 on it, but now it should be a great Christmas present (for my father :D ).

I'm beginning to thinking everything was an elaborate PR stunt :p

Still, congrats to PAL land are in order. Releasing this game as an actual retail product would not have been a good idea.

I was quite curious about what the new extra chapter was going to be about. I hope 2D Boy talks about it in the future.

Edit: wait a minute, so PC is still getting a retail release? Will it include the extra chapter?

Maybe a dumb question but why would Steam have a region-lock ? It's kind of stupid, what's the point of digital distribution then (other than to rape the $).

Now wait a second.... does this mean the "extra chapter" is never actually coming, then? Or that there is a chance we might see a downloadable extra chapter in the future? Or...?

A Valve employee explained this a while back:

We also want games to be available in all regions (see our own catalog of Valve made games for evidence of this).

However, the world of game publishing is complicated. Sometimes publishers are split into mostly independent North America/European/Asian divisions and one division doesn't have the rights to distribute in all areas. In order to distribute in all areas we have to negotiate deals with all the different divisions and they all have different ideas of how pricing should work and how important digital distribution is for their games. We are always trying to help them understand the importance of markets around the world as well as help them understand the importance of fair and equal pricing for all regions, but it's an ongoing struggle.

Also, Germany is kind of a special case due to the very strict laws against violent video games. We consider Germany an important market and sell our own games there, we also encourage our partners to sell there games there, but sometimes the additional cost and risk created by the local laws makes it hard. Even when it's possible to sell games in Germany the extra restrictions and the cost of just making sure you are in compliance with all the local laws can cause some companies to choose to just not sell their games into Germany. If you are German and you want more games it would be a good idea to lobby your politicians to ease restrictions.
