AGOURA HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--THQ Inc. (NASDAQ:THQI - News) today announced Worms: A Space Oddity, the newest iteration of the popular turn-based strategy game, is scheduled for release in spring 2008. Retaining the humor synonymous with the Worms brand, Worms: A Space Oddity marks the franchise debut on the Wii(TM) with a fresh visual style, new environmental settings, intuitive controls and even more customization options. In Worms: A Space Oddity, players will enjoy the ultimate blend of classic Worms game modes and re-invented single-player missions, as well as multiplayer modes that include a host of all-new party games and even more customization options. The game takes advantage of the Wii's intuitive controls, on-screen hints and the redesigned interface with an in-game help system. Worms: A Space Oddity demonstrates significant visual, technical and design advancement over its predecessors with a new visual style that abandons the traditional drawn approach and replaces it with a distinctive style inspired by classic Sci-Fi looks. The Worms battles take place across six planets, each with its own, unique environments and global events. The online multiplayer experience pits up to four Worms fiends from all over the world against each other.

Worms: A Space Oddity is being developed by Team17 Software Ltd out of West Yorkshire, UK. Along with this title, two additional titles in the Worms series, Worms: Open Warfare 2 for the Nintendo DS(TM) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system and Worms 2007 for wireless handsets, are scheduled for release this fall.

So yeah team 17. But is this game 3d or 2d? If 3d.. fail.

I actually enjoyed Worms 3D despite it's shortcomings. By the description here though.. We've got no idea at all about the game :lol

It's a Worms game with gesture based controls and a hint system! and Minigames!

If it's 2D I already have Worms XBLA, if it's 3D then we'll see.

Jesus christ Team17. Make something new.

Worms games are generally good, if it makes money and people want it I don't see any problem with churning them out. West Yorkshire devs FTW.

Whatever, I think it's weak. They probably have no creativity left in that team at all anyway.

They could do an original XBLA game, but noooo.. Why don't they just name themselves Worm Games like that Juiced team.

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
So, a checklist for the perfect worms game for Wii...:

1: Online, yep,
2: New styling (Space in this case), yep,
3: 2D, Nope, or it doesn't seem like it.

Although relatively small these days, there are still a hardcore Worms Armageddon fanbase out there who would kill for a fully fledged 2D worms, I wish T17 just made a game that had both, thus getting both fanbases on board, ah well.

Wait how much do they want for this game? Worms is on Live arcade for 10 bucks and it's in HD. This is going to be very interesting if they want 50 dollars for basically the same game only not in HD. I mean other than changing the background/maps, how much different can a worms game be?

Whilst I agree that something new would be nice, in reality the company has to turn a profit - something becoming increasingly harder to do esp. for smaller outfits.

If they're actually having trouble making a profit after four billion Worms games, perhaps they should try something new.

If they are in fact making plenty of profits, they should use that money to try something new.

They claim to be indie, which is true and respectable. They're the 4th or 5th largest indie UK game studio apparently. Just using the same old formula seems to go against that whole independent ethos.

Worms for Wii awesome, it fits the platform & control system for menu selection etc

but I am the one sick of this recycled crap in PR?

Non-gaming press rely on this to form an article, on the rare occasion they'll cover a gaming related story.

2D or 3D I don't care, I like both. They're just different (I know, duh, but some people don't seem to get it).

But of course this one will be 3D. How would you use the wii controls in 2D ? OMG WIIMOTE POINTER FOR WEAPON SELECTION !!!
That's all I can think of. And gesture based command for a 2D worms ? Awkwardest controls ever.

In 3D at least you have wiimote aiming, which is going to solve imo the major problem of a 3D worms on console.

I hope the new style is not that new.

Worms is on live arcade?!?! That makes my new 360 happy!

Wii Worms could be good with the pointer.

The problem with them being indie is that they can't take risks on the same level that other companies can. A few years back they had Alien Breed 2004, which looked very promising. But since they couldn't get anyone to publish and fund it, they had to resort to keep focusing on Worms.

I have a feeling that if they were in a more secure position, they'd push some other franchises as well.

I do think they'd be better off tied as a 2nd party dev. But I guess that goes against their philosophy.

Come on, Harrisson, you know you want 'em.

I'd really prefer a 2D Worms, but the chances of them doing a brand new 2D Worms entry on a console is unlikely, especially with the Wiimote, which would fit as a 3D aiming device.

Worms + Wii = awesome.

But the motion-based controls and stuff about six unique planets (there better still be random levels) worries me. Maybe they mean six "themes", like backgrounds in the other games?

I was kinda bummed out when Worms 4: Mayhem didn't make it to the US shores for PS2. I'll go against the grain and say that I really enjoy Worms 3D as a local multiplayer game.

I love World Party and Armageddon too though.

Considering the firing arc that many weapons have, I don't really see the pointer bringing a big benefit to the table.

Personally, I feel the remote would be great for 2D. Tilt to change angles and retain a simple button interface for weapons change and such. Worms isn't exactly known for its complex control scheme.
