While this does have some good reasoning for it, I can only see "elb" when I see this.

It doesn't immediately communicate that the silhouette is meant to be an 'M', or that it begins with 'M'. Only the upstroke is highlighted, opening it to interpretation as a lowercase 'l'. I wouldn't blame anyone for mistaking it 'elb'.

How I expect it's meant to be seen.

Thread title is self-explanatory

Exhibit A:

Everytime I see this logo, it's like looking at a high-school design stuck in the 80s.
OP fail, that is iconic and cannot be changed because of their Dynasty era of Mike Bossy and friends winning multiple Stanley Cups in a row.

The original Islanders logo is cool (can't say the same about the fish sticks logo)

Is that an honest to god mistake? Or something to stop sounding weird like "Toronto Maple Leaves" as in leaving some place?

I guess it's like an official nickname that literally everyone uses. Their official team name is 'Toronto Maple Leaf Hockey Club' according to Wikipedia.

watched a match a few months ago between Wolfsburg and Napoli, when their logos were on the screen it felt more like a game between investment banks than football teams :/

A lot of personal hate in here :jnc

99% Invisible had a great episode on Flag design, and really, everything in that podcast applies here. Simplify, stop using town names in the logo (sigh, Vancouver), and think about what your logo looks like on a postage stamp.

A lot of really hilarious failures though, good thread!

Can you spot the grammatical error.
The Maple Leafs say that the name was chosen in honour of the Maple Leaf Regiment from World War I; however, the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team had won the International League championship a few months earlier and had been using that name for 30 years. As the regiment is a proper noun, its plural is Maple Leafs (not Maple Leaves).

The late 80's Mariners look was fucking vile. Not a fan of yellow and blue together on any team (I know tons of iconic teams wear it, it looks like shit on all of them - except perhaps the current GS Warriors set,) but that poor combo paired with shitty font, complete with a poorly executed drop shadow really just makes me a bit ill.
.

Um, you must be forgetting the team that made this color combination ICONIC. Arguably some of the best unis in all of sports. And dat helmet . . .

my least favourite are the generic, corporate, "clean" logos that seem to be taking over:

'

gross

Know why they do those? Because it looks good across all media, mobile-print-display. A lot of the older logos are really cluttered when you look at them in some formats.

It's not awesome, but that's definitely the reason.

WHAT

Wow, that's an even worse design than I thought.

Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it less beautiful. The Expos symbol is the quantum physics of sports logos.

Should go with it being modern art. Then me not understanding means I'm an uncultured philistine. :p

The Ducks are now using the webbed D logo as their primary, and that logo as their wordmark, so slight improvement already. It grew on me when they had it on their old jerseys, but their jerseys are better now.

Anyway, my submission for terrible-looking logos:

Quebec Nordiques.

LA Clippers.

Colorado Rockies.

As an Indians fan, I agree with earlier posts that chief wahoo needs to go. It's 2015 for crying out loud! They really need to change the name too, but I was thinking if they replaced wahoo with just a red feather (For the secondary logo. The red C would remain the primary), it would be a step in the right direction, in my opinion.

Not technically a logo, but based on the logo of the owner's other business, I give you Kingsley, mascot for the Partick Thistle FC:

Here's the logo it's based on:

It looks like an angry uterus.
Lmao they misspell business and leave the scribble on the logo. Holy shit
