• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

would you buy a 2nd PS3 if...

Nope. But one of these day's they'll release an online game I want to play.
C'mon Culdcept Online, you fucks!

lol - there will be at least two in the house anyways from launch :D

The other half has ZERO interest in her X360, so i've sort of stolen it... i guess i'll do the same for PS3.

Give me a linux kit, and distributed processing across multiple cells over the network and I will. Maybe more ;)

They've said this will be possible (and one of the reasons for the gigabit switch), but I'm not holding my breath.

just a question, is cell going to work over a network? I thought that (at least for the PS3) that was a misunderstanding and the whole "using cycles from other units" was all internal to the PS3 (it will use spare cycles from spare SPEs not from network connected Cell devices)

There isn't the network bandwidth for them to work in unison apparently, I mean affordable and worth including at least.

As recently as E3 they've said this will be doable. It was one of the reasons they included the gigabit switch, apparently. I'll get you a direct quote, from Masa Chatani i think.

They've said you'd need at least a 100Mbps connection for it to work over the net. If true, a 1Gbps connection ought to be enough.

edit - here's the quote, from a Watch Impress E3 interview with Masa Chatani (SCE CTO):

Q. Gigabit Ethernet connectors are listed as In x 1 + Out x 2, what does it mean? Does it have router function and are they for WAN/LAN? Or do you use a special connection to connect multiple PS3s together?

A. It has no router function. It's supposed to be a switching hub internally, but I don't know about the meaning of In/Out frankly so will answer about it at the next opportunity. Of course you can connect PS3s together. After it's on sale, some will make a supercomputer by connecting many PS3s. Apparently Sony Picture Entertainment is considering to use PS3 in a rendering farm for movies.

Again..grain of salt. I'm not holding my breath. "after it's on sale" could mean with a firmware update in 4 or 5 years :p

I would consider it.

If a Linux kit is released, and the PS3 generally has some quality A/V server/client usage, then I'll definitly purchase a second.

If the person running the server had total control(kicks, bans, password protection, game rules, gameplay options like gravity, etc) tons of people would. I used to know plenty of people that bought $2500 pcs and expensive internet connections to run TRIBES servers. Sometimes they would sell time on them for important TRIBE vs TRIBE matches for a small fee.

The person running the server also gets the benefit of being under the same roof as the server, zero lag.

I would in a second if I had the upload bandwidth to host a large server, but I don't 32K/s isn't going to be useful for many players. Maybe if it was a good game with humans vs alot of bots (like the CS:S mod Zombie Hordes) I'd still consider it.

That would be needed for anyone that would run a dedicated server for an extended period of time, to keep the low lifes out. And to have a little fun.

I would if I had a better broadband connection.
I moved and my new DSL is half the speed of my old DSL. :(
Maybe when my contract runs up I'll switch to cable, but it isn't much better in my area.

I knew one guy that lived across the street from his isp, he had the best server ever. If you are intersted in making a dedicated server you definatley need some good up/down bandwith, and of course the up bandwith is what costs money.

I want dedicated console servers so bad, but i know it's never going to happen.

I'd buy a second PS3 if it would double the framerate of 30fps games to 60fps.

That's fucking disgustingly shallow man.

I would too

Depends on the games, the price, and whether or not it could stand a high number of hours on without overheating like the tree siddy.

If it's just a bunch of pc games, no dice!
