Top frequently asked questions

What is Xbox Game Pass and how does it work?
At Xbox, we believe in offering new ways to give you the best value to play a collection of the greatest games. For one low monthly price, Xbox Game Pass gives you unlimited access to over 100 great games – including popular backward compatible Xbox 360 and blockbuster Xbox One titles. Xbox Game Pass will add games to (and sometimes remove games from) its catalog every month, which means you can always find something new and exciting to play. Download and experience games in their full fidelity from top industry publishers and play offline for up to 30 days. Xbox Game Pass is truly your ticket to endless play.

Do you need to have an Xbox Live Gold membership to access Xbox Game Pass?
No, you do not need to have an Xbox Live Gold membership to access Xbox Game Pass. As with all Xbox Live titles, you will need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play multiplayer in Xbox Game Pass titles.

What games will be available on Xbox Game Pass when it launches?
We’re working closely with top industry publishing partners to bring a robust list of titles at launch. We expect to have over 100 games from the most popular genres including action, adventure, shooters, puzzlers, strategy, RPG, and more with new titles added each month.

Will Xbox Game Pass be available where I live at launch?
Xbox Game Pass will be available in at least 27 Xbox markets at launch, quickly growing to as many new markets as catalog availability permits.

Are games for Xbox Game Pass streamed directly or will they be downloaded to my Xbox One?
Based on fan feedback, streaming/connectivity issues were identified as a major pain point for competing game subscription services. That’s why games on Xbox Game Pass will be downloaded to your Xbox One, providing fans with a native, full-fidelity gaming experience and the ability to play downloaded games offline for up to 30 days.

Is there a limit to how many games I can download to my account at one time?
No – so get your storage ready! Gamers love to play, which is why Xbox Game Pass gives you unlimited access to over 100 backward compatible Xbox 360 and Xbox One games while they are in the active catalog. There is no limit to the number of games you can download from Xbox Game Pass, other than the hard drive capacity, which you can manage or upgrade at Xbox.com.

Once I download a game with Xbox Game Pass, do I own it?
No, the Xbox Game Pass catalog will update with new games being added every month. You need an active Xbox Game Pass subscription to play games. If you love a game currently in the catalog and want to own it, you can buy it and instantly save 20 percent off the price of the base game with your Xbox Game Pass membership, plus get 10 percent off any related game add-ons and consumables while the game is still in the Xbox Game Pass catalog.

What happens if my subscription expires or I cancel?
If your subscription expires or is cancelled, any games downloaded through Xbox Game Pass will no longer be available. However, progress and achievements will remain attached to your account. All games that you have purchased from Xbox/Xbox Store will remain in your games library until you manually remove them.

Will Xbox Game Pass be available on Xbox 360?
Xbox Game Pass will only be available on Xbox One. While some Xbox 360 backwards compatible games will be included in Xbox Game Pass, those titles will not be available on the Xbox 360 console via your subscription.

100 games is nice. Do we know for how long they'll be available? Is it always one month or up to the publisher?

What? I thought that this is kinda like Netflix so no preset number of days for how long games will be available and a warning when they're close to being removed from the collection.

Makes sense for the monthly service to launch at the start of a month

It's $9.99/€9.99/£7.99 a month right?

Really hope the library is up to snuff, EA access at £20 a year has a amazing library and for 5x that with this I'll be holding xbox to a quality library.

Yeah it's communicated that way at least. And it makes the most sense.

The two games that have been tagged as Game Pass games (#IDARB and Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons) have their 20% discount set to expire June 1st 2018.
They can alter the end dates at any time so things could change.

what happens if I download a game and I'm still playing it when it gets removed from the service? It would be good if there was the ability to continue playing as long as I have a sub, providing I've already downloaded it - so it just gets removed from the service for new downloaders.

Will be interesting how this might impact EA Access subscribers - I could see quite a few people jumping across.

Gives you the option to buy at I think on a 20% discount. Also, you can buy the game outright if you want. I really like the option to buy and I wish Netflix did this.

Might be worth adding a non MS PR FAQ to the op after what we learnt over the last couple of months.

- Achievements Unlock and remain if you cancel your sub

etc. etc.

I'm right yeah? anything else?

Nice! Be interesting to see what games we get

Expect we'll be seeing hardware bundles from now on with 1 month free thrown in similar to EA Access

Save 20% on Xbox One game purchases and 10% on all related add-ons, but only while the base game is currently in the catalog.

What does this mean, what's 20% off? If the game is free with the game pass, how can a game purchase then be "20% off"?

The game does not always stay in the Game Pass library and users may not always want to subscribe to Game Pass. In that case, it makes sense to purchase the game.

I guess the library won't be permanent, titles will be rotating on a monthly basis for example. So, you can buy the game to keep it in your own library if it gets removed from the service or if you cancel your
sub.

OK, so it's to untie the game from the sub, that makes sense. Never understood why Sony disables the ability to buy a game if you get it via Plus.

I suspect that being able to play up to 30 days offline will be a popular feature. You're paying for one month, going offline for another one and you've got your downloaded games for two months. ;)

Wow so it's not gonna be at E3? Interesting.

MS is doing everything right with Game Pass so far. Next step is a solid Library.

Subscribed btw, is this gonna be the main topic for it?

It got announced months ago, tehre is not really something left to announce other than details or some publisher deals.
The most important thing is yet to be announced. The games, lol. I expected some sort of sizzle reel similar to the BC one in 2015. Also it gives it some exposure to a wider audience.

Edit: Just watched the video. Yikes that's a terrible ad, but it sounds like it confirms Gears 4 aswell with the chainsaw other dudes line. I can't imagine they'd say that for an older Gears.

Interesting, kinda, but the titles seem to be very old, and downloading the games... My connection is not that good, to download Halo 5 I'd need around 20 hours...
We're not a in "Netflix instant service" style, where you browse > you find something > press play & watch.
I think they should allow it to solo games at least.
I mean I imagine my experience with this service and don't wanna subscribe so much:
- OK, after this hard day I'd like to play a game, let's check what there is... Oh XYZ game, I wanna play that!
*selecting the game*
>download starting: 15 hours remaining.
- ... Yeah, I'll just pick that game on my shelve, or read a book.

But well, I'll try it, it's not expensive (compared to the ridiculous PSnow pricing), so why not.

Just say Netflix with the option to buy.

Yeah, if you have a horrible connection then digital isn't the best option.

But if you're saying that your connection is not good then wouldn't streaming be problematic as well? What Microsoft should do is make their games (and their patches) smaller or at least give you a choice if you want to download all the MP/eSports stuff.

Based on what your connection sounds like, streaming wouldn't be a particularly good option either.
