Xbox Live Dashboard update released (1-30-06)

For the lazy

Today, the Xbox team released a mandatory update for the Xbox 360 dashboard. This free update, is now available over Xbox Live. There are no new features in this release, but rather a series of fixes and enhancements. Some of the items the update addresses are:

Improved logic around deciding if saved games should be deleted and offer the option to only delete the profile and to leave all save data.

Users reporting blank Friends List on the Xbox 360 dash after muting a friend while playing a game in Backwards Compatibility mode.

Improved synching of games played to Web and in console.

Network settings: keyboard does now allow entry of - (dash) character in the keyboard.

I just noted the wording of the article says, "some of the updates are". It will be interesting to see the full list, but if these are any indication it's less than earth-shattering.

Best update ever.

Ok, so, what are people still expecting with CoD2? Lobby system? Fixed lag? :lol

I put a dollar on them simply showing you the level unlock code if the mission killing bug happens to you, saving them from dealing with you over the phone.

Yeah I'd imagine the bigger ones would've been made more clear.

so you won't even get a notification or anything that a new version is being installed? Or when you exit to the Dashboard it will automaticallly start downloading?

Apparently you just log on and it downloads automatically.

Theres a pretty funny thread at Team Xbox where everyone is going nuts over it lol:

I dont know. But on the old box when you signed in, it would force you any upgrade if there was any. And yes it would notify you while doing it.

I thought the COD2 update was going to be seperate from live update so look for that later today or later this week.

I started my 360 up today via the start button on the remote... the dashboard came up as usual, then the screen went blank for 10-15 seconds, then the dashboard came back up.

Maybe it just downloads and installs itself in the background.

I have no faith in Infinity Ward at all on fixing diddly.

That could be.

yea, where's arne. spill the pr.

There'll be an update on Xbox.com with more information later today. I'll share the URL once it goes live (and if GAFers haven't found it before I get it).

I haven't seen the text that's on there, so I have no idea how much more detail it will provide.

The initial report said that the CoD2 patch would follow in the next day or so.

Did anyone notice their dash version number change?

From the info I have, the auto-update hasn't been released over XBL yet, but should be really soon.

I don't have a 360 handy, so I can't check on that.

Fucking Teamxbox!

I just went on there and some asshole had a HUGE 24 spoiler as his avatar. Huge as in showing someone dying ffs! So some dickhead just ruined 24 series 5 for me.

Thanks a fucking bunch, TeamXbox...

Me, either. But I played last night using the System Link glitch and had a blast, 16-player games with very little lag. If they do come through with this patch I've got a feeling it's just going to be a small download that alleviates SOME of the lag, and wipes out that little System Link workaround. No lobbies or hosting options.

how can you be sure they died?

Here are some of the changes in this update:

* Improvements to the Xbox Guide.
* Option to retain your saved games when you delete a profile.
* Increased accuracy of "last time played."
* Network configuration improvements for Xbox Live® members in the Netherlands.
* More detailed messaging for unreadable disk or region errors.

Here's the meat of it. Mystery meat...but still meat.

would a multi-user chat room be too much to ask for? obviously... (please MS, make a fool of me and have this feature implemented by the time I get home from work...)

"Worst update ever"

All I want is the ability to play my Arcade games or regular games (single-player) while downloading stuff off Marketplace. Why is this so hard to implement? Don't even need to play with people on LIVE... just be able to play single-player. This has prevented me from downloading a few big demos because I don't feel like waiting there for 2-3 hours.

wow it fixed basically nothing (just downloaded it),

Games are still listed in your games list, even if you just played the demo version.
The Xbox Live Arcade/Marketplace interface still sucks
Downloads still require you to stare at screen.

etc, etc

Greeeeeaat update!

I usually just download it before I go to sleep and leave my system on overnight (shouldn't overheat as the system isn't running too hard, as evidenced by the much slower fan speeds when in the menu)

Hey how does Live know where you are? Is that the "Locale" setting there? I mean, obviously they have content servers all over the world, so how do I know it's not downloading stuff from across the ocean then? When I plugged it in for the first time, it was fast. Everything was fast. Now DOA4 is a lagfest, marketplace downloads are slow as hell.

Should I call my provider? Maybe someone can provide an IP adress which I could trace to see how many hops it takes and what my connection times are. Otherwise I really can't tell who is to blame.

Well, it seems like you understand that playing multiplayer would be impossible (or maybe just improbable) whilst downloading a file that's upwards of 1.25g on the same pipe.

How hard or easy would it be to implement the kind of functionality that overrides every single game's (already released, mind) ability to select "Multiplayer" from the menu screen? Or, barring that, have it kick out to a Dashboard error message reminding you that you are downloading something?

I think it's either one or the other. Since you allow games to have the functionality to play online, you cannot allow players to do anything else but continue to chat whilst they're downloading something.
