Xbox Live Dashboard update released (1-30-06)

For those that are interested in the Dashboard update, I would suggest picking up Major Nelson's podcast that goes up tonight. I don't know how much more info will be in there, but I know it's something that is covered.

Hopefully this wasn't entirely useless to point out.

The people with undeserved SS grades are glitches, I've heard. If someone has an SS grade and they don't deserve it it's a bonus for you, since you'll get huge points for beating them.

Ryu scrubs aren't a problem, take the time to figure out the counters for his torpedo shit.

SS ranked scrubs are not new to the online fighting world. CvS2 and 3rd Strike for the win.
 
i know the SS grades are glitches, but those glitches are being passed around to people instead of them earning it (for getting the achievement points i guess).. ahwell, they'll get back to their E/F rank soon enough.

Still the most annoying thing in DOA is the telelport +grab 'BUG'! An unblockable move that only needs 3 inputs, WTF is up with that?? Seems Ninja Gaiden's success is raping DOA! Ugh, Super Ninja my ass!

The torpedo stuff i can handle, but the teleport grab i can't stand especially if you can't tell if he is going for the grab or use a kick/punch

you can sidestep all three teleport attacks pretty easily
 
I just updated my Dashboard as I was loading up DOA4, and really didn't notice any big improvements so far. I haven't taken a gander at my achievements list, though. I'm curious to see if they got rid of the unachievable ones for games like Smash TV.
 
In all fairness this looks like it was nevery intended to be announced ahead of time, just a small, minor tweaks package release behind the scenes with little fanfare. We have nothing but that Hardocp article to blame for fanning the bogus flames of anticipation.
 
I just listened to Major's blogcast... when he interviewed the guy off of the dashboard team, I got the impression that there was going to be plenty of updates. I also got the impression that the dashboard updates are seperate from game updates.

So, typical GAF, the update got blown out of proportion. Personally, I'm just happy that MS is responding to complaints and that items that need patched or updated can be.

The other thing I wanted to point out is, I know some folks have been flooding my blog with COD2 feedback. I've given that feedback to the developer. And, just to be clear, I gave them this feedback BEFORE the Xbox 360 even launched. So I knew that there were going to be some issues and I gave them that feedback. So, it's not like I've been sitting around going "Oh, there's some feedback here." No, I'm very, very aware of what's going on.

Going by that, then all the comments from Activision support ("It's an MS issue, we provided the basic Live support and it works as intended") and the complete silence from Infinity Ward until the fans were in an uproar...was all just so much bullshit. They knew all along that they were releasing a game with broken online MP.

No first-person-shooter with an online mode should have totally inferior hosting/joining options to almost all other online FPS released in the last four years and receive scores in the 90-100 range. This game got tons of reviews over 95 of 100! Most reviews don't mention the online issues at all, those that do don't give them justice, and almost none factor them into the game's score. Here's the big F U to the gaming press.

Even GAF didn't even mention the problems. They gave it 91 of 100, touched on the online play, and never mentioned these shortcomings. Shame on you, GAF. Shame! I expect this from others but not from you!

Oh you mean like Halo 2? :lol Yeah how many game reviews for Halo 2 mentioned the fact that unlike every other Xbox Live in existence you would not be able to create publicly open matches. Oh yeah it was real fun having every single stranger on Halo 2 desperately sending me friends invites so that they wouldn't be forced to play Bungie's completely uncustomizable playlists.

Nearly all the reviews I read covered the online mode in depth. Halo 2 MP rocks.

Can someone describe what the problem is with the CoD2 MP?

It's interesting that COD2's shitass multiplayer had no negative impact on its reviews. I don't even think most reviewers got to play the multiplayer. Then I was reading EGM's PDZ reviews, and 2/3 of them are "Hey, the single player sucks, but the multiplayer is cool, 9!"

you know *thousands* of people were (and still are!) waiting for the CoD2 patch.

Debunked:

There is no one named Jerry Gavin working at Infinity Ward and they are not working on an African Rainforest map. The first patch file due out for Call of Duty 2 is not scheduled to fix any multiplayer bugs. The first patch file will only fix the "Saved Games Being Lost" bug.
 
One improvement that I've noticed.
When you're playing [eM], the dashboard stuff is smooth now. Pre-patch it was jerky as hell over the top of this game.

edit: and it's jerky again now. I dunno why but it was fine after the patch, before I rebooted it :(

Yeah. The fact that the MP shortcomings were not annunciated are maddening to say the least.

Completely agree. PDZ's single player is very poorly designed, yet the multiplayer carries it through for great reviews. COD2 they don't even look at the multiplayer. I don't get it.

The problem is that games that have a major offline component and a major online component are really two games. They are usually done by separate teams, and occasionally by completely different studios. Reviews should really give two grades, one for the offline game and one for the online game. That way Call of Duty would get an excellent score for its single player game (which is deserved), but a lousy score for the online portion (also deserved). Similarly, Halo 2 would get an average score for the single player and an excellent score for the multiplayer.

I think single player was definitely above average (the story was another thing...)

Then It showed a download bar, after it finished, the 360 reset by itself.

Strange that for some people nothing happend.
