Xbox LIVE Indie Games - The September 2010 Thread

Crisis averted, I can play again now!

So, the new marketplace? It's like they've improved it and then thought "hang on, this is a bit better than we expected" so they've made it worse.

Indie Games are now hidden away in "specialist stores" so are harder to find, but the list of new arrivals now has 50 games on it instead of 15, which is excellent. It just takes four or five more clicks to get there via that route. It's weird.

Indie games are right there in the featured section...

They're excluded from the new "all games" stuff like by letter, but I can understand that.

I complained about this in beta feedback and they shut me down. I feel like it should under the featured area and all downloads as well. Really pissed me off to see it moved even farther back.

Tank Battles is awesome. Its a hundred times more polished than anything else I've seen in the indie channel.

Its made by Gameloft, rumor is that it got denied for XBLA so they put it on the indie channel. There's been a lot of drama about it in the xna community. A lot of people are upset that a big corporation is putting games in there and not contributing anything else (playtest, peer review) to the community.
Maybe that's why it took so long to come out.

I'd argue that if Gameloft (whose iPhone clones I am not a fan of) is putting quality titles up and thereby increasing consumer awareness of XBIG then they are contributing to the community.
I agree with this.

This thread is amazing!
You're almost in time for the next one!

Break the Invaders is Space Invaders and Breakout together, but it's more just Breakout because the invaders don't move much. I didn't like it very much because the ball seems to bounce randomly rather than taking physics into account, but I did really like the prompts to get you to buy the game, worth trialling to have a lol at these.

FUNNY MINI GOLF is funny for all the wrong reasons, and mini golf, just about. I challenge you to hit a shot out of bounds and then not laugh at the animation. If it can be called that. It's amazing. No idea why the character isn't an avatar, it seems like that'd make sense but it's just some ugly thing instead. The golf is really hard. There's no arrow that I could find and so every shot seems to be slightly off, there's a fair bit of "hit and hope" as well... Still funny though!

RAID. Well, there's not much that can send a chill down my spine more than seeing a game by Silver Dollar Games. I actually quite enjoyed this though! It's basically a series of QTEs where you burst into a top-down room and have to press the corresponding button to an enemy, and leave civilians alone. It's pretty mindless but at the same time, it's quite satisfying as you explore a whole building bursting into rooms and shooting people. I'm surprised.

Tank Battles is good but my God, THE LOADING. I think a good half of the time I played was watching a loading screen tick up ohsosloooowly. The game's a lot of fun though. Not sure how good the online play will ever be but there's some decent offline modes too, you can play a normal battle or there's a campaign. The battles are for four players, you just wander around the top-down arena in your tank shooting, trying not to get shot. Controls are excellent, responsive, and it plays really great. When it's loaded.

The Tribes of Ursea, MORE LOADING. There's nothing fun about this game at all. It just plays horribly. You have to fly around over-the-shoulder with really weird controls and then shoot at something or other, it's not clear what, and it's impossible to keep locked on and honestly, it's not playable.

HakoSekai I wanted to like because it's cute and sweet but it's... odd. I'm not sure how much of a game there really is here. You're on a grid and have to set traps for enemies. When an enemy walks over your trap, press one of the face buttons to activate it and then depending on what you press, the square the trap becomes terraformed. Like, press A and it becomes grass, press X and it becomes ice/water. But I've just got no idea why. It's really nicely made, and the enemies behave differently which I like, some are roguey, some attack, etc, I'm just not sure what the ultimate goal is.

Mostly it took so long because they localized it for every language, each of which it must pass review in. So it sat for months waiting to be tested in Italian, German, etc.

Yeah, I agree too. It looks better if there are actually good games in the top downloads list rather than shovelware apps, no matter who makes them.
