Seems like the time of endless McDonald's wraps on a loop is almost over.

Q: Will there be advertisements built into the dashboard like Xbox 360? How many?

A: We designed the Xbox One dashboard to make your favorite games and entertainment even more front and center. Advertisements will not be visible on the home screen, so you only see what’s most important to you.

FWIW the 360 doesn't have ads if you use your router to adblock them.

No ads on home screen

"Recommended: Star Trek Into Darkness, Rihanna, deadmau5"

And thus the thread becomes a debate about the distinction between ad ads (like McDonald's) and content promotion for non-game stuff and content promotion for game stuff and which of the categories qualifies as an ad.

The whole console is one huge 1984 ad.

Even if they put ads later you do not have the right to sue.

Well, that's certainly an improvement over the current 360 dashboard.

But what about the other five screens on the XBox One dashboard?

I still think we're going to see ads in both services, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Not to mention I really don't mind most ads that tie back into the games/movies/tv services that both platforms have.

Hopefully "only see what's most important to you" means we can fully customize it.

That said, I have no problem with them promoting the content that's available on their service.

Those aren't really ads. When I think of the ads people were upset about, I think of when they're advertising me a car or McDonald's wraps, not if they're advertising MGS5 or whatever.

I have no problem if they show me movies, music and games as that's something that's on the system, and could actually be relevant to me. Plus, the developers of games really need those tiles to get attention. If you haven't seen Indie Game The Movie, there's a moment in there where Team Meat is PISSED that the tile for Super Meat Boy didn't go up until a few hours later.

you have to get through "trending" to get to games. I expect ads, but thanks MS for being gentle while you shove them down my throat.

also recommendations... kind of ads, even if they don't claim they are.

Oh, yeah the trending is going to be all "ads" if that's what everyone thinks of them. Just use Kinect and say "Xbox Games" and you won't have to even see that section.

I don't think of these recommendations as ads really. I've never had a problem on the 360 dash if it's showing me games related content, because you know, maybe I forgot that game X came out today. I think the huge tile on the dash also really helped State of Decay as there was basically no hype for it, but the tile got people to try it and it's now the second fastest selling game on XBLA behind Minecraft.

I see three ads on there.

So you'd rather you weren't able to see content that's potentially relevant to you then?

Why not leave that kind of shit in the marketplace tab? This is the user's home screen. It should be his own space.

This thread title is just wrong, as the screenshot shows. There's no argument against the fact that the right side is all advertisements.

Why is the Xbox video icon so small?

What's the difference between advertising a Mcdonalds wrap, a shitty Rhianna song, or a game that I might actually like? Regardless of how well they are targeted, they are advertisements. I don't see how someone can dispute that.

Absolutely.

Apart from the part where they're advertising.

I actually don't give a shit about advertising things on the store/marketplace/whatever. In fact i find it kind of useful. But to say there are no ads on that page is stupid and wrong.
