So what changes from usual for all platform? Nothing... we'll see, but I have a lot of confidence in Xbox (and in P3) One X has not disappointed me and IHMO is the best platform currently in circulation. (PC aside obviously) .
the acquistions will make a difference, to the face of all skeptics.

With current generation swap , It seems 2020 will be better for Nintendo than MS and Sony....

...thinks mods should get a real job.

Sony never does crossgen games. They like to show what the new tech is capable of but if they did they'll still have games that are exclusive to the PS5 too
Last of Us Remastered. Their most successful game launch in the earlier part of the gen as well.

They do it. They all do it to an extent. Hell im hoping current version of Gran Turismo Sport gets a conversion of some kind and built from there.

HOWEVER. Microsoft seems to be promising One X-like bc support and/or enhancements.

Its about damn time.

I personally expect that we will see very few true next gen exclusives. What I can see happening is the next gen version getting released a month or two sooner before current version comes.

I know Sony has never done crossgen games on launching a new console. Its one of the things that pissed me off when PS3 came out. But maybe some of the reasons are to do with the different architectures of the system they had at the time. With PS4 and 5 it will so much easier for Sony to produce crossgen games and it make more sense for them to do it. They have over 100 million users they want to transfer over to the new system. Seems easier to me that they keep them on-board with as many Sony exclusive as they can giving users time to pick the moment for them to move to PS5 (Maybe the first price drop etc.)

Your logic is flawed.

The goal is to move as many PS4 cutomers to PS5 asap.

What kind of insane logic are you using that you would discount simply forcing people to buy the new console to play the next Sony first party game?

That's what 1st party games are there FOR. They are there to push hardware, or they have no reason to exist.

-You can ONLY play this amazing looking game if you own a Ps5
-You can play this amazing looking game on the console you already own, but it will look nicer on Ps5.

Which one is the stronger sales argument? Which one is more likely to make consumers think "damn I need a Ps5 ASAP" as opposed to "cool I'll get one when there's a good sale, maybe black friday next year?"

Yep which is why most likely they will have backwards compat so they can move their ps4 library to the ps5, their whole agenda is to sell new hardware and quick

People just don't get it as Microsoft is simply not thinking its consoles like other manufacturers use to do.

They want to offer a platform that has all Xbox games. This platform is PC or an Xbox console. They don't care about selling a ton of Series X, as long as the overall number of people playing on Xbox is good for them.

They have been building a strategy where all games work on all Xbox, this is obviously not to force people into buying the next console if they are already satisfied with the current one. Manufacturers don't make much money from selling hardware (except Nintendo with their cheap consoles lol), so sending tenths of millions of them in the world does not change the result that much, if people can buy all the new games on previous hardware. And this is actually better for the planet by the way.

One X is already quite good for people with a 1080p TV, I am not sure that Series X can offer much more for these people. The reasons to upgrade won't be the games (at least not for a few years) but what Series X can offer to these people on the hardware side (shorter load times, locked 4K, better framerate etc...). Just as you would upgrade a PC. Not upgrading your PC does not prevent you from buying games.

We heard this the entire last generation. Hell, even at the later years of 360. "The game will come.... the games will come....".

As an early Xbox One adopter, I'm tired of promises. Show me the games. And not E3 trailers for games that get canceled or come out and are so bad that they should have been canceled.
Wait for e3.

But even though they are trying to sell more hardware which will then lead to more software sales, sony with the ps4 , ps4 slim and pro outsold MS considerably and also sold wayyyyyy more software than all the xbox family consoles combined

Hum okay ? How important is this ? Does this prevent Microsoft from having a healthy business with Xbox ? How does this compare to the money made through gamepass and other services ?

This is why ps5 is my must buy even at 6 teraflops.

Xbox purchase will happen 2 years in like this gen for me when its reduced in price and has plenty of good games to choose from.

Dont care if third parties run and look better on it.

Maye release the console when you have some sort of exclusive line up ready. People already not buying the current xbox cause of no exclusive, and people are supposed to run and buy a new console, that they are confirming won't have them either?

More software and money leads to even more software and money or the best grass roots expansion where studios can expand, get more staff, get more teams and hence make more games and products for the consumer ala naughy dog and how they branched out, insomniac games, sony bend etc

also with gamepass they dont really ever say how profitable they are, in reality most services like this aka the netflix model bleed money and I wouldnt be surprised if they are esp when you can get it for a dollar at times

I think making games crossgen would have the adverse effect. If you continue putting your games on the PS4, that gives the userbase less reasons to upgrade

And this is why PS5 will have exclusives that won't be on the PS4 at launch

The Last of Us wasn't crossgen as in buy the game on PS3 and be able to play it on PS4, it was remastered for the PS4

Makes sense, I remember the ps4 not having its exclusive games come out for a while when it came, it's the reason I bought one over a year after its release.

that's pretty clever to keep the current users on your ecosystem to be honest.

people that can't afford the new consoles at launch and have an Xbox One right now, those will buy new games on their system, so you buy games and will get the better versions for free if you upgrade to Series X.
and it was basically the same last time aswell, Titanfall, Tomb Raider 2 and Forza Horizon 2 all had last gen versions (but without the benefit of cross buy)

Sony tremendous success does not look like it is such a great thing for creativity and variety of first party games. Naughty Dog has been outputting the exact same games for 2 generations, does Japan Studio still exist ?

And money made with gamepass and live also goes into studios. I don't see a difference.

This makes sense.... and I am glad to hear they will have games that will focus on the new hardware so quickly. Typically we see these generational gap games last a good 2 years into a systems life.

I'm pretty sure an XBOX fan said PS5 would have no games at launch...…...So it went from articles like "MS is preparing aggressively for next gen, buying all these studios to prepare, whilst Sony is just twiddling it's thumbs, not buying any studios and being complacent"......and now it's all about waiting 1 Year in after Series X launches for the exclsuives.....So when the year is up? Will we get great stuff or will there be another announcement of waiting on another year? Phil have been promising great content YOY for years now......Everybody said wait for this gen......

And yet they are aparently working on a new IP and had a new IP in the last of us last gen as well, and before that they had Jak and Dexter. Sony has had more new IP's this gen than MS has had this gen and combined with last gen. What has MS given us that was green lit for a sequel this gen? The reason developers tout sony so much much like Corey just did a few days ago is because they let their developers be creative but also give them what they need to aide in their success aka money and resources. Something MS hasnt done well this generation at all. Sony generally with game development and studios has the biggest leg up on MS bar none.

So cross gen games on the Series X will be a locked native 4K 60fps AND no load times?Sounds good to me!

Leave it to the gaming community to spin this piece of Xbox new negatively, tho!

You are probably highly satisfied with Sony output, but I find it not interesting at all. I also have close to zero interest in Microsoft ouput. However, I find more diversity in Microsoft first party games than Sony. This is all a question of personal preferences.

Cross posting from a similar thread:

Reading between the lines here it sounds like MS isnt actually READY for next gen on the software side but NEED to release hardware to have something to market to consumers. I really think Project Scorpio did set them back a year but are going to rush ahead with Scarlett regardless. Software it sounds like MS new studios arent quite there yet. And in regards to still hanging on to last gen, it seems to me that Papa Microsoft isnt ready to let the basketcase trust fund child (xbox division) off the leash quite yet, despite what Phil would have you believe. Phil claims he sits at the big boys table now but in reality hes the baby in the baby seat with tomato sauce on the bib and crud in diaper still.

The development of most launch games begin on the previous gen consoles. I seriously doubt Halo Infinite would look much better if MS decided to release it exclusively on the Series X and PC only. We don't see the power of new consoles till the second wave of games anyways. The OG Xbox was the most powerful console for the 6th Gen and Halo only looked slightly better than FPS games on the Dreamcast and Project Gotham Racing didn't look much better than Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast. With Halo 2 and Project Gotham Racing 2 though, those games definitely felt like a generational leap in features and performance.

Microsoft has already abandoned the old console model anyways, with several mid-gen upgrades this current gen. When compared to Sony, Microsoft went from having the weakest console to having the most powerful console, all in one gen.

I'll still buy a Series X at launch, as the Series X will fit in nicely between PC upgrades for me and as a Halo fan, I'm geeked for Halo Infinite to launch with the Series X. I feel Halo Infinite has a great chance of being "The Game" when next gen starts and could be a system seller.

Reminds me of this:
I had forgotten all about that quip. Gosh I miss those days. You rarely see large corporations employ such run of the mill stupidity in their marketing strategy these days. Nowadays its all about pissing off the majority of the customers, instead of just about all of them. Pissing everyone off equally is just so much more fun to comment on.

Seems like they will miss out on a lot of early adopter sales. It will make perfect sense for anyone with an X to just wait for a price drop on the Series X and get it a year after launch when truly exclusive stuff keeps dropping.

I wonder if there will also be a segment where X and Pro are supported but the base versions are not. The X is like 5x more powerful than the base console and the series X is only twice the X? It feels like game consoles are going to switch to some bastardized version of the PC upgrade model. At this point they should just sell you a motherboard to slide into the console box rather than having to buy a new console altogether.

If you have an X there's a very good chance you are part of the hardcore that will want the series X either way.

People will shit all over MS for this but it’s really a good business move. You don’t want to abonden your userbase so readily. MS do deserve more respect for allowing all backward compatibility for Xbox Series X. I see these moves as nothing less than consumer friendly

Ah the Achilles' heel...

I'm not really a fan of this strategy... Although I like backward compatible, it kinda means you will get a bit prettier graphics / better fps on the series X compared to the ONE X for the first year.

I'm kinda looking for games to really improve and do something not possible on the current gen of consoles. This strategy is good for my wallet though, now I can just wait a few years until true next gen Xbox games will be available...

Looking forward to Sony's strategy.
How would games improve over today? Sony not Microsoft will be breaking too much ground here.

You're making up a bunch of games that you dont even know if they're in production or not.

Sony might surprise us and put out a new title or two and the rest may be 3rd party and indie games for all we know.

I have a feeling both Sony and MS will be in similar boats at launch this holiday.

You better hope Sony doesnt rush a bunch of half assed titles out just to have something "exclusive" out at launch.

There's a decent chance most of them are cross-gen.

Same as Halo Infinite and most likely Forza.
I doubt it. I think WilD and Demon Souls will likely be cross gen, I don't think the rest will be.

Looking back at PS4's launch, Sony didn't have much cross gen titles, as in launched on all systems. MLB The Show might be the closest thing to that tbh. The Last Of Us was remastered a year after it came out on PS3, it didn't get announced after PS4's reveal as a PS4 game coming to both PS3 and PS4 or something.

So stuff like Knack, Driveclub, Killzone SF etc only came to PS4, I expect stuff like Spiderman 2, Ratchet remake 2, Horizon 2, GT7 etc to only come out on PS5.
