Xenoblade 2's pacing is so great that literally everyone who played it notices the outlier in ... chapter 3 or so when a total filler story takes place (stolen items). In every other jrpg that scene would be standard fare, but in Xenoblade 2 people noticed it because the rest of the game is so masterfully paced.

Found XC2 far more tedious and slower paced. Hated the skill checks, the characters (except Pyra) and dropped the game after 110 hours, just couldn't stand how it dragged on. Enjoying my time with XC1 much more.
You showed them, pal, you really showed them. 🐧

OOOOh yeah!
Vale was designed by Yasuomi Umetsu

Same guy who made two very hardcore hentai..

there you go, you don't get more lewd and badass than KITE, unless you go way back to Ninja Scroll and GOLGO13
still Vale is such a weak design compared to the other works by this artist.

As a painter I enjoy the fact that XB2 had such talented artists it did not add anything to the story but as a manga/anime fan that was pretty much the Super Smash Bros of lewd artists

You can tell these guys are fans, I hope they continue to piss folks off with plenty of lewd yum yums in the future

I somewhat like Vale's design but it was clear that he was holding back, so he wouldn't go too lewd.

I myself really big fan of different artists designing theses Blades.

I don't doubt your knowledge of this topic at all, I am just surprised this is a negative point to you having taking such a deep dive into what Japanese find entertaining. It was mostly written for them more than it was for us mind you. I don't expect Shakespeare out of them.

Tsundere is more of a character flaw in a character arc than it is stereotypical of anything. You hardly see that tag used anymore these days, it was one of the most overused ones. XB2 is pretty much a harem anime so having a tsundere should not be shocking to anyone who knows this stuff, it should be expected as much as a cat girl or bunny girl. If you look at manga books or even hentai books I am not talking about videos here or anime, I mean the art drawing on paper stuff. Many of them are published as a compilation of guest artist or mangaka. Each chapter is a different story drawn by a different artist. I think this is what Monolith Soft went for with XB2. It got a lot of backlash from folks like you expecting more of the same but I think they did the whole manga readers fandom justice with fanservice. XB2 is lighter and a whole lot of fun.

I always found tsunderes to be funny in manga this made the fanservice in XC2 even funnier knowing this is what they were going for I think that was the point for Mythra. It is just part of Japanese writing. If they bother you why bother playing a JRPG who's developer grow up with this type of stuff. I bet half the guest artist in XC2 have a hentai pen name.

I don't think Japanese writers need to abandon everything in their culture just to please our tastes, I partly enjoy the fact that these things are from people who have different views on things.
I think you have a bit of a misconception. "The Japanese" look down on anime. It's for kids and nerds. Also, tsundere have hardly died out, they are found in every harem anime ever and there.. are a lot of them still. Especially in all those isekai trashy ones. Also saying "XC2 is pretty much a harem anime so a tsundere is a given" is kind of cicular logic. My point is that it didn't need to be a harem anime and I'd argue it's not when the story is taking itself seriously, which is every other chapter. Also XC1 didn't have this, nor did XCX. And I'm not talking about sexiness mind you, I'm talking about trashy writing that requires absolutely 0 writing skills because it's literally just copying all the generic anime out there.

I appreciate you discussing honestly, but there is a lot more than generic anime stereotypes to Japanese quality out there and the success thereof is testament to it.
Think Steins;Gate (which even features a well written tsundere that has many other sides to her), Shingeki no Kyojin, Berserk, Gantz, heck, even the typical shounen ones such as Boku no Hero Academia, Naruto, One Piece and many others that don't feature just walking stereotypes.

Also let me clarify once more, I do enjoy XC2. Storywise, it's just not as great as XC1, primarily due to extreme jumps in tone (but other factors as well).

Herr Edgy Herr Edgy : it mostly comes down to taste, I personally find “anime” part of XC2 enduring same way I did with anime like Kaguya-sama: Love Is War.

I think Vale stands alone just fine until you remind someone that this dude did Kite and Mezzo Forte
did not need to hold back that much in a game with bunny girl, or trap boy

I think I'll miss the XB2's Blade concept the most when the next title changes things up.

I'm not really into how you get them but I like the whole lore of them as well as the guest artist part

I'm not quite sure what you mean by enduring. Do you mean endearing?
I get it, I'm not saying you can't enjoy it. But it should be pretty obvious that if those trashy anime scene are 100% the same as in every other harem anime ever, then it surely can't be considered good writing (talking strictly about those scenes)? If any person who has ever watched an anime like this is asked to write one similar to it, it would result in the same quality as the original, because there is so little involvement there.

Busty chick is into MC-kun, MC-kun walks into her in the bathroom due to mistake on the inn's owner, the girl being in the wrong bathroom or MC-kun being too simpleminded and accidentally walking in, she stares at him, he lets out a "Hm?" while doing this face -> :messenger_grinning_sweat:
she does this exact sequence of facial expression:
:messenger_hushed: :messenger_open_mouth::messenger_pouting: and then proceeds to punch MC.

Yeah, sorry about that it was my phone autocorrecting :messenger_grinning_sweat:

For me those scenes are meant to lighten the mood so I personally I enjoy them. In weird way those light hearted scenes made serious moments much more impactful.

I would rather end the discussion since it adds nothing to the thread, and you seem rather fond of shitting on this and that and focusing on some sort of needless Elitism rather than enjoying the art that this celebrates. You might want to enjoy Hideo Kojima next classic rather than looking for depth in Xenoblade.

Saying Japanese look down on anime is no different than finding out snobbish Jamaicans hate dreadlocks, reggae, and dancehall. It is not a misconception at all I don't tend to honor elitism as the correct perspective or views on cultural expression.

Fans can have different tastes and get along but I can't fuck with snobs who can't lower themselves to simple things.

I am an artist I don't like or enjoy elitism, and nothing is more annoying than manga, anime, and gamer snobs. Meh.

I get having opinion is a hard thing, but maybe not be on a discussion board if you think I'm being a 'snob' just because I don't appreciate writing any 12 year old could do?

And what can I tell you? it is what it is, if you are saying this is "Japanese culture" and "this is what the Japanese appreciate" then you are simply in the wrong. If you go to Japan and talk to 'normal' people there they will tell you the same and I find it rather disrespectful towards them to outright state that trashy writing is 'what Japanese appreciate'.
There certainly is a subculture like that in Japan, they obviously produce this stuff as well. But they are far from representing 'the Japanese'.

this is what I mean, you comunicate your ideas like you are a little kid yet you say shit like this at the same time, grow up if you don't like something just say why without sounding like a baby wasting our time.

To enjoy any form of art you have to consider the artists, the creators of a that thing. There is nothing wrong with criticism when you do that much work in understanding who the artist is. You make valid points about what you don't like about XB2 until you drop tsundere on us, now it is written by 12 year olds.

It has less to do with 'Japanese' and more to do with XB2 showing that Monolith Soft is full of Japanese Anime nerds, they created a whole game celebrating all the key attributes of the lighter sillier sides of anime. All of that flew over your head we get that. You keep telling me who the Japanese are, I already gave you credit from dropping tsundere like it is hot, you are like that meme of the Japan expert, next you are going to tell me what an Otaku is, and how Kawaii culture ruined everything.

It is not that serious, you loved XB1 more great, you did not like XB2's anime vibes fine. You are an expert, greeat.

But you are also very snobbish in how you critic this work, I know fans like you their sole enjoyment is finding what is wrong with a thing to come on a board and be seen as the 'expert' been there done that, that shit is as old as Robotech, and Voltron, I'm talking old as shit.

You can crictic something without saying boobies are bad, panties are for kids, a 12 year old can write that. It makes you sound like you can't understand art can be simple.
It is like going into a major art museum seeing a painting with just a red square on it and saying anyone could paint that. It says you lack the ability to think in more than one dimension it says more about you, than the work you are commenting on. You can dislike any art for any reason but it is the way you are expressing that dislike that makes you look stupid.

Any 12 year old could do this, show me ONE who has created something like this that sold millions of copies and I'll grant you the point. Beyond that this is not a review or valid criticism it is just narrowminded trolling trying to derail a thread for your entertainment. Who cares more on.

To be fair, I have a bit of a compulsion problem (same reason I have stuck with FFXIV for 65 hours while blindly clicking through every god awful mission and skipping 90% of the cut scenes). So, yes, I have suffered so others may not have to :)

Listen dude. I did exactly that and just answered a post asking for comparison of XC2 and XC1.
Then someone quotes me and asks "WHAT UNIVERSE PLS"

I respond to him, giving my thoughts. Someone responds to me asking whether I hate those scenes that much and asks what makes good pacing. I explain my thoughts, again, stating multiple times that I like XC2 and that only parts of it suffer from bad writing, which ultimately drags down the good parts as well, as in, they can't reach their full potential anymore.

Now here comes you, calling me an elitist snob, while you don't even try to engage with me in a proper discussion.
Sorry you feel butthurt over me giving my thoughts to people who asked. Maybe stop being a snob about people having their opinions based on analysis and critical thinking rather than a gut feeling?

Man, Eryth Sea and Alcamoth have so many side quests it's not even funny. I usef half of the day searching for NPC's to give them and even longer actually doing them around the big map. Exclamation marks shown on the map are life savers, so my playtrough is going trough much faster than original. I'm still wholly enjoying the game, hope to beat it before Deadly Premonition 2 released next month.

I just did them all again in New Game Plus lol it is not really that bad as you think when you already know this area, I think what annoys me the most about "Earth" Sea is the fact I would like to take out the shadow areas from the map the fog of war thing I want to see the whole see but I would have to swim around the map for days.

I find the NAPON home tree to be much more difficult to 100% harder to get around too many floors NPCs move around a lot more

All I do in both areas is set my clock night and day to see if any NPCs show up with a quest, also remember you have to speak to all of them to unlock some quests also some of the quests come from other places, but are done here.

I really need to stop playing this game. I got to get back to work

I really don't find the fights that enjoyable, I just enjoy being overpowered :3
Haven't watched but I really enjoy the combat. I like fighting higher level monsters and having to work out a strategy. But that's new this time around, I played the game overpowered the first time I played it. Hard NOT to be overpowered with all the quest XP, I leveled myself down a few times actually. Getting ready to fight territorial rotbart soon.

What they do with the reconstruction music - the way it changes as you progress, is so beautiful! Loving it.

Maybe I used the wrong words it is not that I don't enjoy the combat, I do but I mean does anyone take a deep dive like this guy does?
I mean if I took my time and do his set ups I might be untouchable. You buy 2 more art books after you finish FC raising them from a max level of 10 to 12. You are already overpowered tho.

I'm not smart enough to figure out all the things he did but I definitely enjoy implementing the kind of ideas he mentioned in battle. I just watched the dunban video and it was great. I never realised tempest kick turns you to face away from the enemy so you can force topple an enemy by making them behind you with thunder, even when you're only fighting one big enemy. I thought I could only use thunder against crowds because otherwise you always face your opponent and it can only daze enemies behind you. I wonder if I could build a chain attack, then tempest kick/force daze on a big monster before using it, then immediately activate chain attack before I turn around while they're dazed, thunder again for double daze, then use 2 yellow arts with other characters for x3 chain multiplier. Then even if the chain attack ends they will be dazed for a while, but if I doesn't I could do blossom dance and switch over into red arts at really high damage. That would be cool to try...Some of the toughest enemies are immune to daze though.

Been switching characters constantly throughout the game, and now I'm stuck grinding enemies before a boss because my entire team is 6 levels below it and can't hit the damn thing. Maybe some of those damn quests should have given me some exp instead of just useless money?

I can't. I've literally done them all and I'm still 6 levels beneath this boss in like Chapter 16.
Is your affinity high (3 stars or so) with each area? Just guessing but sounds like you need to talk to named characters (green dots) to establish them in the affinity chart, and then once their relationships are established with each other in the chart more quests will open up. It just doesn't sound right to me because I did all the quests and I kept being overleveled, and I had to use expert mode to level myself down. The places with the lowest affinity should have the most quests for you to do

I'm being very serious when I say I've done every quest. I've spent a great deal of time talking to every character during every part of the day. They're all 5 star other than Colony 6 which is upgraded as far as possible at this point. I don't remember this happening back on the Wii game, but I also barely changed characters during that. I've been switching constantly so they all get in and I think they all fell behind in levels since they don't get full exp sitting on the bench.

I'm dumb. I forgot about Expert Mode and it's been murdering my exp. All my characters are supposed to be 75 lol.

Yeah I switch it up and play every character a lot too, they're all about the same high level. Sorry, I wish I could help more but I had a very different experience.

I do remember that Riki has an always active ability in one of his skill trees that makes everyone get the same xp regardless of battle participation, maybe that has something to do with it

I tried out that trick...it doesn't work, or not really. It's cool that you can do tempest kick into daze with thunder, but while it works on weak enemies, strong enemies resist the daze effect. Even if you get lucky and they don't resist the daze, and then you start a chain attack, the game knows you forced the daze instead of breaking and toppling first. So after dazing a level 94 enemy with my level 80 party, I started a chain attack to stack topple and daze effects, but the little exclamation mark on green and yellow arts didn't light up, and when I used them the hud says "resist." It would be a huge game changer because dunban is the only one who can really hit higher level enemies, all the agility and night vision gems in the world don't work for other party members, but when dunban combines those with his 'serene heart' accuracy aura, his attack actually connect. I've been winning against level 90+ bosses by getting dunban to topple them so that other party members can then do some damage while they're down. I guess the tempest kick into thunder trick would be too OP and ruin the game if it actually did work completely.

I finished this yesterday. I forgot just how good all the scenes in the last third or so of the game are. I clocked around 50 hours total. All the quest markers really did speed things up.

Hahaha, so you're at
Lorithia
, too? :D I'm stuck at that battle, too. But I was mentally prepared, because I already finished the game on Wii and 3DS. It's the hardest fight in the game and the dumbest grind-force, too. No idea why they thought her level had to be that high, could just have lowered the final bosses' level a bit. Good news: Once you've beaten that fight, it's almost easy going all up to the end.

For grinding, I recommend the gorillus enemies on Bionis' Leg (once you cross the big bridge, go left at the north end, there's various gorillus).

I've been winning against level 90+ bosses by getting dunban to topple them so that other party members can then do some damage while they're down. I guess the tempest kick into thunder trick would be too OP and ruin the game if it actually did work completely.
Are you using level 12 art books yet? That might help later on.
not sure if all of this can be said without testing Skill Branches and what your Skill Links are. But then again I never usd Dunban unless I am forced to so I am never really going to try any trick having to do with him. I don't even try topple locking but it is the way to cheese all superbosses

Yeah topple locking is basically what I've been doing, although not perfectly, only because nobody but dunban would hit higher level monsters otherwise.. Level art books drops are pretty rare. It's kind of funny - whenever I do find one, it's always for a lame ability that I don't use. I like fighting tough monsters though so I will get drops for them eventually. I think I actually need all books to max out achievements.

To be fair I posted all monsters for Topple Locking but Enel said 'Most' so I'm guessing some Superbosses are not that easy to topple lock.

I was really lucky in my first run with art book drops fighting uniques but I got a lot I've already learned too. So yeah you can go a whole game without the drops you need. Just remember there is a 30% respawn rate for those UMs I fight them until I get by books. Everything is easier with Max Affinity which I've been slow to work on.

I'm not maxed at all with my Skill Links or even unlocked all Branches, I'm too lazy to go do the affinity raising trick.

it takes about 2 hours to max affinity for everyone doing this but I am too lazy to go do this I don't want to spend 2 hours finding one enemy

Ah yes, the amazing Melia! The queen of insane damage over time. Easy to build a chain attack damage bonus with because of her talent art too. Yet the IGN review said she was a weak character so we should use Duncan and Rain instead
I have kept Melia in my party lately all I have to do when I get a chain attack is press her center button and she kills whatever I am facing lol making this a walkthrough no challenge at all with her gems set up

Speaking of IGN the week of that review they had a NVC which is IGN's Nintendo podcast and they had a guest and when they got to the Xenoblade talk he totally went in on Xenoblade calling is TRASH. Peer went on to defend the game but by the end I was done with IGN concerning Nintendo.

What was the basis for him calling XC1 trash? Pyra's evil bewbs now taint even other xenoblade games in the saintly priesthood of gaming journalists?

Well Indomitable Daulton got dominated.

Eternal Palsadia's existence was quite temporary.

And immovable Gonzales got hit by an unstoppable force, lol.

Killing 10+ level higher enemies makes you level up really fast, but that's okay I think. I liked being underleveled, but if Dunban is the only one who can hit enemies that way, it forces me to play Dunban all the time. Part of what's so great about Xenoblade is each character's unique abilities and fighting style, so I think I will let them all level rapidly to 99 so I can play as the other party members.

so when an area still has gray on the map it means I have not reached every named place because if you do find every named area the whole map cleans up
man what that is going to frustrate me on some maps

also I now feel I missed a lot of timed quests at the Eryth Sea areas smh finding lots of new ones in NG+

Herr Edgy Herr Edgy : it mostly comes down to taste, I personally find “anime” part of XC2 enduring same way I did with anime like Kaguya-sama: Love Is War.
Yeah you really have to endure Kaguya to keep watching it.

I have the first 3 volumes of the manga, not a fan of what it became.

His earlier work IB is great (before he had to end it) go read it if you haven't.
Im actually really enjoying the anime, the animation is great and it has same type of visual comedy that I enjoy in shows like Nichijou (are we ever going get 2nd season for this masterpiece?)

Yeah I had forgotten that the map auto-fills once you have visited every landmark. I was swimming around Eryth Sea when I swam under prison island and then the whole map suddenly filled out. I feel bad for people who were trying to fill these huge maps by walking/swimming over every part of them
