Am I crazy, or did that Akiba's Strip trailer have Dire's Thunder Split Attack from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure?

Yes, I understand those two things are not mutually exclusive.

Really surprised to see so many sites calling Brandish a remake of a SNES game -- I realize the SNES game is all a lot of English-speakers know, but the SNES game was a Koei port of the original PC-88 title, which was also ported to a gajillion other Japanese computers before the SNES saw its (somewhat middling) debut.

The top-down world-turning mechanic may seem a bit gimmicky, but I actually found that it really adds to the atmosphere. You kind of "get" it after playing the PSP remake -- or at least, I did, and I was never really able to "get" it in its previous incarnations.

The reason for it being presented that way (or, at least, my theory in that regard) is to give the same sort of sensation as a first-person dungeon crawler, but without limiting your perspective quite so much. Since Brandish is an action game, not a turn-based RPG, quick reflexes are sometimes absolutely crucial, so things that couldn't exist in a first-person title (like objects/enemies in your peripheral vision, and a general sense of dangers right behind you) become all the more necessary for survival. By playing the game in third-person, but using first-person movement and camera controls, it's sort of like a compromise between the two styles: it has the immersiveness of first-person, but the visual field depth of third-person.

The real reason to play Brandish, though, is for the absolutely PERFECT dungeon designs and the extremely intelligent trap and puzzle designs. This game may very well be the most heavily polished dungeon-crawler I've ever played, managing to be balls-to-the-wall hard without ever being unfair about it. If you die in Brandish, it's pretty much always your fault, not the game's -- you rushed in somewhere without taking the necessary precautions, or went into battle swinging without an actual strategy in mind. It's absolutely a thinking person's game, and does an incredible job of keeping you on edge without ever actually frustrating you.

...Oh, as for the quality of the video, that was unfortunately due to the fact that our PSP capture unit is largely borked and we were under major time constraints. I think the trailer itself is still pretty good, though, personally -- the track was chosen because it represents the game's overall atmosphere better than a more "Falcommy" song would, and the actual visual design represents one of our new employee Kelly's very first efforts -- and again, it was done under absolutely ridiculous time constraints, so I think it's pretty amazing she was able to make something so cohesive in such short order.

I know you guys are notoriously pretty picky about trailers, though, so I know you'll never buy any of that, and I can only hope we were able to make it up to you with some of the others we released during E3. ;)

Oh, P.S. The PSP version of Brandish is actually a pretty cohesive remake all-around -- in addition to the entire visual style and gameplay getting a much-needed upgrade, the bosses were also given a lot more depth (new attacks, new forms, new puzzles), and a whole new chunk of dungeon floors (around 12 of them) were created as expert-level challenges (to be played as the sorceress Dela) for those who've beaten the game. And in typical Falcom PSP remake fashion, you can choose to play either with the newly-arranged music or the original PC audio.

From the short time I had with Brandish, I could fully appreciate the amazing care and work that went into the AMAZING dungeon design and traps(as I mentioned in an early post in this thread :p ).

If I had to be completely honest, the trailer just didn't excite me at all, but I really want this game to sell well so I might be expecting too much.

I love and hate to have the option to choose the music, because all the options are usually amazing and I end up wanting to reply the game just to hear everything!

That trailer isn't also very good at selling the game due to the poor framerate. I did fix that a while ago, though.

That Brandish trailer is terrible. The gameplay footage has a weird filter over it, and the song isn't exciting at all.

Totally agree with all you said. Why would you even use that track for a trailer? It's like the weakest track in the whole game.

The screenshots they've released doesn't help either - makes the game look like crap. I just wish XSEED the best with Brandish PSP, as it's truly an excellent game and also a great opportunity for more people to discover this underappreciated (and fantastic) series.

For the record, Brandish 2 did receive a fan translation.

I wonder what will come first, Brandish or the PlayStation TV. It might be the first PSP game I play on my PS TV.
 
So how many Corpse Party games are there and how many will be included with the PC release?
It's the original GrisGris version, ported to C+ for your convenience. That means original graphics, amateur voice actors and some things fiddled with compared to the PSP remake, most notably a fifth chapter that was added after release for PC and appeared in Book of Shadows.

Well, you are the authority on Brandish for a reason. ;) My apologies for the misstatements. I assumed my copy of Brandish Renewal was titled as such because it was an updated version of a previous PC-88 game, as so many PC-98 games are.

Opinions, and all that! I like that track, and once again, we thought it fit the dark, creepy atmosphere of the game really well, and had a very good natural cut-off point at around the 1:10 mark.

So how many Corpse Party games are there and how many will be included with the PC release?

The PC release isn't a compilation, it's just the first Windows version of Corpse Party, originally titled "Corpse Party: BloodCovered" in Japan. In other words, it's not the 1996 RPGMaker game, but the 2008 Windows remake of it -- the game that the PSP version was based off of (though as Delusibeta noted, it's being converted to C++ for the first time by Sara, as the original version was coded in a Japanese programming language called HSP that's a bit hard to work with and has some compatibility issues, so our Windows edition should wind up being the definitive PC experience).

To clarify the other thing Delusibeta noted, though, the fifth chapter and the Book of Shadows chapter are two different things. Basically, here's how the story goes:

The Japanese version of BloodCovered PC was released episodically in five chapters. I believe the PSP edition of the game got greenlit after chapter three debuted, and while chapter four managed to get released by Team GrisGris prior to the PSP game's launch (I think?), chapter five was seen by players for the very first time in the PSP version, only later making its way back to PC to finish off the story.

Because of this, while chapters 1-3 are more or less the same between the PC and PSP versions of the game (even slightly improved on PSP, e.g. with more voice-acting), chapter 4 has a couple minor differences that work in the PC version's favor, and chapter 5 has quite a lot that's different between the two versions (including music changes, dialogue alterations, an entirely new scene in the PC version, etc.).

And then there are the Extra Chapters. The PSP game has 10 Extra Chapters, whereas the PC version only has 4. However, one of those four is exclusive to the PC version, and is basically a retelling of the "Tooth" chapter from the PSP sequel "Corpse Party: Book of Shadows."

...Except Corpse Party: Book of Shadows was a point-and-click adventure game, and Corpse Party PC is more like an RPG without battles. So Team GrisGris literally redid the entire chapter to use the classic Corpse Party structure instead of point-and-click, adding puzzles and scenes and bits of dialogue that aren't present in the Book of Shadows version and... basically surpassing the Book of Shadows version in every way. It is absolutely the definitive version of "Tooth."

The seven Extra Chapters not present in the PC version will be missed, but those who've played Corpse Party on PSP can attest to the fact that most of the Extra Chapters are more like... extra cutscenes. They're all super-short and non-interactive save for the first two, and those first two are among the four included in the PC version.

What's Trails in the Sky? Didn't that game come out 3 years ago on PSP? Why would we hear something new at E3?

The absence of localized Kiseki keeps me up at night.
There's supposed to be a PC release on Steam of the first game this year and a PC/PSP digital release of the second game this year as well.

Don't worry, we haven't forgotten about you guys. The Steam version of Trails 1 is coming along nicely and should be ready to go soon-ish. And Trails 2 is... still a ways out, but it's also coming along quite well.

We'd be more specific if we could be, but this is one of those series that you just kind of have to work through at its own pace. You can't rush Trails or it's just... going to be a disaster. We kinda sorta rushed Trails on PSP, and as a result, the translation suffered in parts -- which is something we're endeavoring to fix for the PC release.

So have faith! We may not be saying much, but we are hard at work on it. And not just "hard at outsourced work," either, but hard at work in-house as well -- Hatsuu has been devoting practically all her free time to QAing the game and building a more comprehensive "terminology bible" for us to cross-reference with Trails 2 and compare against later Japanese installments of the series as well, to ensure not only that our localizations of Trails 1 and 2 are accurate and consistent with one another despite being translated by different people, but also that our localizations are "future-proofed" in case we ever work on Zero, Ao, Sen, etc.

We're gettin' SUPER-SERIAL about the Kiseki games now, and are making sure that when you finally get a chance to play them on PC, you have the best possible experience doing so.

So hopefully, the wait will be worth it! But I am sorry it's taking so long, either way.

I know you can't/won't comment on this question either way, but I'm still going to ask it: Is there any chance Trails 2 will still be released in 2014 or is it really unlikely that we're getting our hands on it this year?

I know, you would have said something if it was possible for you to comment on it, but it'd still be nice to get some vague idea how far the game is off. But I understand that everything you say would just be interpreted as hard news and a source of public disappointment if the game still needs more time than anticipated, so yeah.

A PC-88 would probably melt trying to run Brandish, lol.

Opinions, and all that! I like that track, and once again, we thought it fit the dark, creepy atmosphere of the game really well, and had a very good natural cut-off point at around the 1:10 mark.

It's not a bad track per se, just not one of my favorites. It IS a good track though (and *maybe* way too epic for "that" scene), but not exactly the best track to sell this game when you have terrific stuff like Tradition, Tower, freakin' HEADLESS (which is just face-melting), Cave, Fortress and so on. Yukihiro Jindo has been lately a hit-and-miss for me, yet nearly all his arrangements here were wonderful.

Also, I've just read an old comment by Synchronicity (won't link due to ToS terms) regarding Dela's Mode in Brandish PSP. Here's her post:

Actually, I had no idea about any of this. I've... never played Brandish 2, so I'm not sure what the link would be, though I do have an idea what it PROBABLY is...

As for names, the names I've picked so far are BTOWLS --> Vittoria (it sounds like a stretch, but I sort of extrapolated this slowly over the course of the translation by trying to suss out intent from katakana and context) and GADOBISTALL --> Gado Bistalle (which is actually the official English spelling according to certain pieces of Falcom art and a few comments in the game's files, and while I don't typically just take official English spellings at face value, this one seemed to fit the context well, whereas going with "God" wouldn't quite have worked since
during the battle, he actually splits into two entities that are officially named Gado and Bistalle if you triangle-button them, and having one of them simply named "God" didn't seem like it was Falcom's intent

She has mentioned this, yeah. I think it's definitely something worth looking into in the near-ish future, but we're a little too busy at this exact moment to put that together.

No, officially, it's still slated for this year, and it's still possible that we'll make it.

Yeah, pretty weird that the English Detective Mysteria tease got replaced by Brandish.

Wonder if they changed their plans or something since the teaser image was nothing like that. :p

I LOVE YOU XSEED, but hiding the guy from English Detective Mysteria for Dela Delon from Brandish was a dick move.

Totally my fault on this one - I thought it would be a good way to poke fun at ourselves by posting an obviously bad Photoshop job over the final silhouette image and pretending that it never happened since we can't formally confirm that a title that was never announced isn't coming over after all, but it's become quickly apparent that people are either confused since they didn't see the original post back in December, or they just don't think it's funny.

As Tom stated, that's why teasing titles early can sometimes come back and bite us (and you could even make that same criticism of some of our officially announced titles, if you're aware of XSEED's full history...)

Brandish sure is looking good, day one on my Vita.

Corpse Party looks good, still haven't decided which version i'm gonna get (wait for this release or just get it on PSP/Vita).

Akiba's Trip.............I don't know about this one, that trailer didn't help with explaining the plot/story at all for me.

SK Bon Appetit...........not interested in Rhythm games, more power to anyone who wants this though.

SK Shinobi Versus.........eh, this plays somewhat similar to Dynasty Warriors right? i'll wait with this one.

I didn't know about the whole Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons situation, it'll be interesting to see how that develops.

And the wait for Trails in the Sky continues..........

What do you want to know? I couldn't be a whole lot closer to the story for this one, so I'll be glad to help fill in the blanks.

The problem with going into too much depth, though, is that it gets into spoiler territory pretty quickly. And make no mistake, there ARE spoilers to be found in this game -- the plot may not be Shakespeare, but it's still pretty involved, has a rather large cast of characters, and is full of twists and turns. ;)

SK Shinobi Versus.........eh, this plays somewhat similar to Dynasty Warriors right? i'll wait with this one.

I still don't think Dynasty Warriors is that great of a comparison, honestly. It plays like Senran Kagura Burst, just with fully 3D environments and a much wider variety of moves. It's less massive open-world kill-a-thon, and more traditional brawler/beat-em-up.

I don't know if it's been said already, but I don't quite get this game. Are there just "story" missions, or is there mode variety (a la Dynasty Warriors)? Is the multiplayer just co-op of the single player missions, PvP or something totally different?

Have you played Burst? Because Shinovi Versus honestly functions pretty much exactly the same way. You take a story mission, you read through either a dialogue cutscene or a novel cutscene (or both), then the character appropriate to that mission is placed into a 3D battlefield with a specific goal she's trying to accomplish (usually "get to and defeat the boss enemy"). Once the goal is accomplished, there are further cutscenes, and then it's back to the Ninja Room to regroup, replay completed missions (with a different character if you'd like), play optional character development missions, buy clothing items, mess around in the dressing room, etc.

And completing one mission typically unlocks at least one more, so if you want to just work your way through the story, you just keep on selecting the next mission down the line.

As for multiplayer, there are three types of multiplayer: deathmatch, strip match, and "Understorm." Deathmatch and strip match are just head-to-head fights, with one being all about number of kills and the other being all about state of undress. And "Understorm" is... erm... a race to see who can collect the most panties. Because it's raining panties. Because Senran Kagura. ;)

I still don't think Dynasty Warriors is that great of a comparison, honestly. It plays like Senran Kagura Burst, just with fully 3D environments and a much wider variety of moves. It's less massive open-world kill-a-thon, and more traditional brawler/beat-em-up.

How's the performance in Shinovi Versus? I'm playing Burst right now and enjoying it, but it can get pretty choppy at times which is a real bummer. I'll buy the game either way, but it'd be nice to know if the experience is smoother.

It can get pretty bad in some levels in more open areas with a lot of enemies on some occasions, but it's playable and usually runs well.

Is Shinovi Versus compatible with the PS TV?

I have no idea what's compatible with PS TV over here, TBH. We still have yet to see any real definitive info or specs for the thing, and can only assume it's identical to the Vita TV in functionality. But we have no idea if there's anything special we need to do on our end to get the game working with it, so we can't really give any guarantees at this point. We need to look into the matter more closely first.
