Yasunori Mitsuda: Large-scale recording for Xenoblade 2 OST at the end of the month

Curious if Treehouse didn't do Echoes because they're already grinding away on this. Who knows.

I don't know, since Treehouse has not done either of the two previous Xenoblade games. Then again, they did Fire Emblem Fates, where as they did not localise Awakening, so I guess anything's possible. Do we know who did localization for Echoes?

8-4 have been confirmed for Echoes

CHiCO from ACE has uploaded some more pics of their time spent recording.

Will someone hurry up and enhance the photos? Maybe we'll get to that level of craziness from the infamous Retro Studios thread. 😂

In all seriousness, I see Xenoblade II: Main Theme in the final image. I was hoping for a different song lol.

Ever heard of Chrono Cross?

Yeah, but the Xenogears soundtrack was better for me. Time's Scar is freaking amazing and I love that track. But overall Xenogears wins hands down - it's not even a contest in my mind. Another Termina sounds like Aveh from Xenogears lol

Do Nintendo really need this for holiday season in the west though?

I think Mario + Smash port would sell more systems

What a weird thing to say... Unlike Mario, Xenoblade 2 doesn't have a specific release period other than 2017. It could be coming out between now and December. Xenoblade 2 is likely the biggest RPG title slated for the Switch.

Why can't Smash come around the same time as Mario and Xenoblade 2?

People like to shit on XCXs soundtrack but outside of a few bad tracks most of the ost was really good. People single out the weak tracks but completely neglect the field themes which are incredible.

Anyways I hope we get a soundtrack from Mitsuda that lives up to his Xenogears and Chrono Trigger and Cross work.

Sorry, my assumption was this game will not release in the west before holiday 2017 and even then it would require a concentrated effort in localization to do so. With that in mind I have to wonder if it's a high enough priority for Nintendo when other projects requiring significantly less localization work (Smash being a prime example but not the only one) wouldn't do more to sell the hardware.
It's certainly possible NoA/NoE are able to localize everything NCL outputs this year in time for the holidays but I wouldn't count on it.

Not interested in a Smash port, so Xenoblade 2 would be just fine. I couldn't give a shit about which games will sell more for Nintendo because I'm not hired as their personal businessman and don't look down on games that aren't as popular or deemed as system sellers - I just want to play this game. 👍

Yeah it's freaking amazing but i don't think it's even the best track in the ost. Preferring one or the other is surely a matter of opinions but the quality of the two soundtracks is really, really close, and they both fit the themes and the artstyle of the two games like a glove.

Yup.

I'm so glad we can put X behind us. What a glorious era for JRPGs.

I don't see why we should "put it behind us". If you didn't like it ok but don't speak for everyone.

I liked x but I definitely agree it wasn't quite God level like XC, and the music was definitely not even close to on the same level.
It was better than XC in many ways, it depends on what you were looking for.

And yeah music was better all around in the first game but the peaks of XCX are just as good as the tracks from the first one.

I've never played XCX and didn't really like the OST on its own, but when I watched Gundam Unicorn a few days ago and heard Sci-Fi Sawano while those mechs were battling each other something clicked. Went back and listened to a few tracks of XCX with the Gundam impressions in my mind and suddenly liked them a lot more. Maybe they're totally misused ingame, wouldn't know, but at least I'd be willing to give it a chance now. Sold my WiiU though, so a Switch remaster would be nice.

They are indeed a very very mixed bag, much like everything else in that game. It's worth playing if you really loved exploring and customizing your characters in XBC, but it's not as tight of an experience.

It's not entirely accurate to say that Treehouse didn't do anything with X, since they coordinated the whole effort. Not that I would want to take anything away from 8-4's work on the game, but there's a lot of people out there that have this strange idea that localization work is an all-or-nothing task for a single studio when it's more complex than that at the level of a company like Nintendo.

On that topic, I guess Echoes was the secret project that 8-4 was teasing for a while then?

I love XCX, so im slightly bias to its merits. However before starting it you should ask yourself 2 questions.

1. Am i willing to put in 100+ hours with this game?
2. Did you feel instantly drawn to the world after watching the opening cutscene?

If the answer to either of those questions is no, then Skip XCX and just play other games while waiting for XC2. If you dont like/love it in the first 30 minutes or so, you probably wont warm to it.

Mitsuda's goal is to surpass the Xenoblade 1 soundtrack.
Colour me excited. Though I wouldn't expect a composer to not want to surpass their previous soundtracks - unless "different" is the theme in play - seeing him actually say it makes it seem all the more real.

If only his goal was to surpass the Chrono Cross soundtrack. Honestly, from Mitsuda, his finest work will always be from both Chrono games and the Xenoblade after that, for me, I think.

"Even if it ends, it is still only half"... I wonder what he means? Google Translate sucks.

Yeah, it's crap! It might mean that it's only half of the soundtrack done.

Creid is incredible, as is his work on Xenogears, Xenosaga I, and Soma Bringer. His Kirite album is legit, too.

People are also sleeping on the Valkyria: Azure Revolution OST. It's overlooked, imo. It's probably the most dense music he's ever composed.

I think that's a project too. Now excuse me while I go into a hot spring and come.

Lol!

Mitsuda was only involved in one track in the Xenoblade OST (the credits song with vocals). He probably doesn't consider that soundtrack to be one of his, he wasn't talking about surpassing his previous work here.

"Even if it ends, it is still only half"... I wonder what he means? Google Translate sucks.

Maybe it means, event songs tend to be longer than the scripted event, so when the event ends, that's still only half the song that he has created for it, which is where the editing comes in.

As for Google Translate, Bing Translate is worse:

"Xenoblade2's mixed start from today.
Even though in the only event, even if it ends half.
But on a good note book that will.
Threatened with Xenoblade1 to work hard.
Without a doubt in the world of game music in one of the largest
I think the project."

I like a few songs on all of those soundtracks you've mentioned but like... the number of tracks on both Chrono games that I like, along with his contribution in Xenoblade, far exceed those of anything else.

Probably why my top 5 favorite games of all time are as such lol. Because they have an incredible amount of memorable tunes all jam packed into one game.

Edit: As for Valkyria Revolution's OST? Yeah, I've heard it all. Some great tracks but again, nothing on the level of either Chrono game.

Certain games I like at least 90% of the OST from.

Earthbound
Chrono Trigger
Chrono Cross
Phantasy Star Online Episode 1 & 2
Final Fantasy Tactics
Ragnarok Online

Would be nice if they lived up to those, somehow. ;)

Starting today we will begin mixing the xenoblade 2 soundtrack. With that being said, its really just the music for the cutscenes so not even half of the music. But what we are recording is fantastic. Everyone is working hard to surpass the xenoblade 1 soundtrack. Without a doubt this one of the largest scale projects in the gaming world.

My inner 15 year old (fresh off of importing the Xenogears OST) is incredibly psyched that Mitsuda is not just composing more Xeno- music, but is excited to be working on the project.

So there's no point playing the game for a couple dozen hours? That sucks. I barely ever have 100 hours anymore and it sounds like Zelda will consume whatever free time remains in the month(s) after getting a Switch.

Xenoblade Chronicles (original, Wii/N3DS) spoilers ahoy
Yeah, she deserves a happy ending, considering everything that happens to her and her people. Xenoblade 2 seems to be pretty unrelated to the first so far though,
so I'm not sure if we'll get anything outside of a "this person founded this thing, which now exists in this form" deal.

This is sorta unrelated, but I came across three of his blog posts from January/February 2010. They're all related to "Beyond the Sky", the ending theme of Xenoblade.

2010.01.18: Recording Day 1

Recording of a certain game.
You can leave the orchestral sound after a long absence ....
Today I recorded drums, bass, and piano on songs.
Mr. Sano (I've been with you for the first time this time), drums,
Watanabe et al. (You are familiar)
Is the piano Mr. Ishizaka (this time is the third time?)
Actually it seems that it was synchronized with Proki's composer, Kameoka,
It got excited. (I'm sorry)
This time it is unusual to start from 6 o'clock in the evening.
Well - thanks to that, I got in time for various things ... (^ ^;).

Special performance plays out from one to the next and it is a terrible trouble.
I truly smile with really great musicians.

Recording in Crescent
Tomorrow we will have a long time recording with Mr. Kira of ZABADAK.
Premonition that it will become a ridiculous song again .... I'm looking forward to it.

But the problem is a singer ~.
I have not decided who to sing yet,
People like the image are not found ....
Let's find it until the end.

If you can sing English natively and have yourself in the song, please send a demonstration (^ ^;).
The singer who can sing English is recruited.
The key of a song is Bb 3 to Eb 5.
Please send mp3 of the demonstration to this e-mail address.

2010.01.19: Recording Day 2

From 3 o'clock ZABADAK's Kira guitar recording.
I have not seen you for a long time,
I was good as it seems to be healthy.
(I felt happy that I remembered a lot about old things)
The guitar seems to be Kira-san, with a wonderful performance
The songs were also full of listening.
No, for a long time, I found goose bumps on my own.
I am sure that everyone will be pleased.

2010.02.19: Recording

Today is recording of songs.
Even yourself is a pretty favorite song so enter nature and power.
It was interesting that it took about 2 hours to record some take
I picked only good ones and assembled it,
Sara's singer himself wanted her to sing it through the street again
As it says, "At last, feel comfortable not to remember
Let 's sing and make it to the end "Take recorded
It was truly wonderful and eventually it was adopted.
I always think that music is good or poor
It is not a simple thing but a "soul" I guess.
Even though it's a bit mistaken, I can not absolutely win over the nuances of the soul.
I think that recent music is boring because it is making it too beautiful.
It is interesting that the music of the 70's and 80's is still heard
I heard that because I have so many "souls" so I do not get tired
I think.
Also, I can fix anything recently.
I feel like I'm halving the fun of music as well.
Anyway, I do not depend on the machine as much as possible, made with soul
Today I want to go around this time.

By the way, when recording Xenogears' Bulgari unvoice
I remembered things.
On this day it is hard to record anything that goes well even if you take a take
He was holding his head.
I did not record in the next take, I thought of giving up and finally brought it from Japan
I handed out plum wine to everyone (actually I planned to drink by launching)
"I will make it the final take on the next. When I ordered various details finely,
Please last at the nuance that you think is the most pleasant, "
It said.
Even now that I became a singing voice that I could mistake
I clearly remember.
After all the take was OK take at this time.
Relaxation and tension.
When this balance becomes exquisite, good music is born.
Really music is deep ....

So Beyond the Sky was only recorded about 4-5 months before Xenoblade released in Japan, but we're not sure when the rest of the soundtrack was recorded since Mitsuda only worked on one track in the first game.

It's a pretty big time investment, no doubt about it. Having experience with the first game does help out with understanding the underlying systems, but X still takes it to the next level and gets really complex with all of them.

No, latest updates seem to point that they are actually mixing the first half of it.

EDIT: Misread your question. I don't know.
Yeah I saw on Gamexplain they said recording was pretty much done and they're doing the mixing for cutscenes.

Wait...they're finished recording the music?
I just saw that mentioned here (more in the link): http://nintendoeverything.com/xenob...ion-hes-worked-on-trying-to-top-the-original/
Recording for Xenoblade Chronicles 2's music appears to be pretty much complete. It was worked on by 150 people, the largest production Mitsuda has been involved with. The mixing process for music began this week.

Mitsuda also said he is responsible for budget management, booking, music sheet management, and composing.
Here are the two sourced posts:

I'm not convinced that that's a reliable translation--Nintendo Everything's sources directly takes you to Mitsuda's FB page and blog post. It looks like the author made an assumption through Google translate...

I assumed they had a translator on the staff, but either way I hope someone else can confirm if either post mentions the recording being complete, or if that claim is a mistranslation.

His translations are very rough in some spots, but does get the gist of what was going on in each post. Maybe shounenka could give us a more accurate translation.
