(yawn) new Tony Hawk game this fall.

thanks gamespot.
Now, Activision is flatly admitting that the series is going downhill--but not in quality. During today's earnings call, the company revealed that it is at work on a new Tony Hawk game, named Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. Activision hasn't released any specifics on what platforms the game will be on or when it will be released, but it did say that it will hit the market in its upcoming fiscal year, which begins in April. "In fiscal 2007 we consider the extension of Tony Hawk, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, to be an important new IP for us and an extension of that franchise," said Mike Griffith, president and CEO of Activision Publishing.

The term Downhill Jam may be familiar to fans of skateboarding games. Downhill Jam was the name of one of the levels in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and it challenged gamers to speed down a paved decline, jumping gaps and scoring points along the way. Old-school gamers may also remember the Downhill Jam run from one of the original skateboarding games, Skate or Die!
So it sounds like a snowboarding game on pavement. Neat-o. Not a big surprise, but I'd thought for sure they would give the franchise a break for at least one year, a bit of downtime does a lot for some franchises.

Wasn't Downhill Jam the name of a level in the first game?

Yeah it was the level that was unlike the other levels where you when towards a goal instead of going around a free-roam area.

It actually could be kinda fresh for the series if the entire game is all Top Skater style arcade downhill runs.

A racing game might actually be fun, and finally a big change from the usual TH formula. Hopefully it's being developed for next-gen systems first.

I always enjoyed the downhill levels of THPS especially the mall had some great combo areas but judging by every game past THPS2 it will suck balls.

Maybe this will be like Skitchin', which I thought was an awesome game and inspired my 11 year-old self to try new rollerblading moves

Totally not excited for this in any way, though. Activision/Neversoft have franchise ADD apparently

Hopefully or else this will be one bad looking Ps3/X360 game.

Tony Hawk American Sk8land makes up for the last couple not-so-great THPS versions.

Oh, and whoever's ragging on downill games really needs to play...

Man, that game was awsome.

DC:
THPS1,2
Cube:
3,4,UG1,UG2

I'm tempted to get THAW, but the special edition is PS2-only. :(

If I get it, I'd want 3-UG2 as well for the PS2.
Can anyone help out?

Oh man, I've got some great memories of the mall level in THPS.
Are they able to reach that level of greatness again? Probably not if they keep releasing one a year.

How so? I've bought and beaten every Tony Hawk game from #1 through THUG2 but I skipped the DS one and AW because they just seemed like the worst the series had ever put out going by the reviews.

Why do people even bother?

It's not like I'm lacking games to play, and if this is like every other dull downhill game - then I'll have more room in my play time for other good games. :D

like shantae 2.....right

*snort*

Sk8land DS kicked ass. Seriously. Full songs, full 3D, full levels, online.

It's basically the best portable THPS ever.

Edit:
Gamestop has the PS2 ones VERY cheap, but hard to find more than just one complete.

Yearly installments, no surprise. If SNK, EA, and Konami can do it, might as well let Neversoft. At least they're clearly trying something different with this one.

...And THAW + SK8land are the best THPS games.

I own THPS 1, 2, 3, THUG, and Tony Hawk 2 for the GBA.

I skipped THUG2 cause it seemed like more of the same, and THAS because it was called the weakest of the series.

I got Sk8land initally just because I could vs people free online...
But let me tell you, it really impressed the hell out of me!

I want to preface this by saying that the game is *REALLY* easy.
Especially if your a veteran of the series. The goals are just simplier - the trick goals are half of what they normally would be, and the fetch goals are just pretty simple.

However, it is hands down the best looking DS game to date.
It runs perfectly smooth, no loading, fantastic animation, great sound (full length songs and everything), completly voice-acted, and I love the artstyle.

It's this pesudo-cell shaded graffiti style that really, really works well for the system. I want to see more games done this way on the handheld.

Oh, and its free to play online too. Only 2 players at a time, but its a nice addition.
The game is made to play in a handheld, if you ask me, because the goals are so quick you can do a few on a quick bus ride or in the car, slam her shut, open her back later - no worries, just some grinds and flips and call 'her a day. ;)

The DS game plays like THPS2, it's pretty good.

Yeah, that all sounds great for a DS game. But I can play with even better graphics, better control, and free online as well with the PS2 games so since I don't ever play my DS on the go, I don't really see any appeal :\

So THAW is great too? Crap, and here I thought I'd given up on the series but now it looks like I'll need to find a free week and play through these two as well :\ Is X360 the best version of THAW?

Not to mention the worldwide leader board.

My nephew loves these games. He'll probably get this one too. I don't see how he plays on the Gamecube controller though. Hurts my thumbs.

Hey! Maybe they can release it as Tony Hawk's Genie Adventure - they'd have the franchise appeal and a good game to go with it! :lol

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy THPS games like I enjoy yer mum on a Friday night; but I really dislike downhill stages. Especially if it's a trick based game. There's only so much you can do going downhill - it's quite limiting.

The most exciting news here, really though, is that they may showcase this game at E3.

And last year when they showed American Wasteland, I went to the private Activison party and got to meet Tony Hawk, get some pictures, saw him perform, and I had a couple beers with the members of Alkaline Trio, who put on a private show.

WAS HANDS DOWN FUCKING awsome.

So, sure, I'm down for Round 2.

An article on IGN indicated that this new game might be aimed at a younger audience.

Wow, a new Tony Hawk game?! I never saw this coming.

It shouldn't be a surprise anymore. This is a sports game. Most sports games have yearly updates. I don't hear many complaints when a new John Madden game or a new Tiger Woods game comes out. Why should a new Tony Hawk game be treated differently in that regard?

I haven't played the DS game, but I've got the PS2 version of Tony Hawk's American Wasteland and I'm enjoying it a lot. I've been playing the Classic Mode a lot lately, which plays quite like the first three games in the series. You've got the traditional two minute runs, with ten different goals per level, and you can accomplish multiple goals on a single run. Some of the level designs are great, like a Mall level (reminds me a bit of the Airport from THPS3). It's also got a few of the levels that were (formerly) PSP exclusive in Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix--I've already seen Santa Cruz and Kyoto.

My main complaint is that it seems quite easy, especially if you're a veteran. On my very first combo on one of the levels, I accomplished the High Score, the Pro Score, the Sick Score, the High Combo, and I think one of the other goals. I think I'm playing through on the "Normal" skill level, so maybe things get a little tougher on one of the harder settings. Also, it doesn't look like there's a whole lot of levels, as there are like eight or nine slots on the list--although it's possible they might have some additional hidden levels that are revealed later in the game.

There's really nothing wrong with THAW as far as I see it. It might be getting lower review scores because the series has been around for a few years, and there aren't as many "surprises" as in earlier installments. But, if you've enjoyed the previous games so far, then I think this one is worth playing.

Exactly! This sounds like the most interesting installment of the series since THUG 1 if they can nail it. Loads of courses, a course editor, and of course, awesome multi online with the ability to save replays. Do this, Neversoft, and you've got a pre-order.

Why do you bold all your titles?

It's analagous to bolding titles of books, movies, or albums in print. Some people use all capital letters when bold print isn't available.

Jesus Christ, belgudo, give it a fucking rest.

He's a fanboy with a weird posting style. :p

also LOL TONY HAWK LOL

This sounds like SSX, kinda. I wonder if it'll have cel-shaded graphics too...

Quite the contrary. I happen to think the car driving in THUG1 was a positive turning point for the series.

I had a couple beers with the members of Alkaline Trio

That is SO rad. Closest I've been is a side-stage greeting + 2-3 words max :( Favorite. Band. Ever.

Activision said a year ago that Tony Hawk would be an annual franchise, so this announcement should come as no surprise. For as unexcited as I am, it's good that they're going a different direction with this. American Wasteland is about as far as they could push the whole "Go anywhere, do anything" Tony Hawk.
