Today, Level-5 gave some sales data about the Youkai Watch series, and as expected, they're all quite good:

- over 7m units sold for the games (retail + digital)
- 200m units shipped for the medals
- 10m for books (including the manga)
- 7.6bn Yen for the first movie (still no word on DVD/BR release, I believe?).

Also, they confirmed the Level-5 Vision event will be streamed live on NicoNico, but they didn't give any link (or I simply missed it, it's not on the official website).

Edit: damn, missed that typo in the title... sorry : / Can a mod please fix this?

Incredible numbers. Wish they would add some in the West.

I am getting increasingly more excited to try the game

The Franchise just started 3/4 years ago right?

Those are awesome Numbers, this is truly the closest thing to being the next Pokémon

I doubt they'll go with amiibo, why share their profits with Nintendo?

But yeah, Youkai Watch NFC toys are definitely coming at one point.
I think Nintendo is willing to loose its share of the pie if the can make sure that the Pie stays on their plate.

why would L5 share when they can make all that money by themselves?

how does the movie rank with other movies in Japan (Ghibli stuff, pokemon, disney etc)

Well Bandai does all the merch for YW anyway so Level 5 has to share already. Bandai is also the only third party supporting Amiibo at the moment.

+ Nintendo already did Youkai Watch faceplates.

Golly. I would like to spend a few years of my life making a billion or so dollars. What a fantastic success for Level-5. Are they a big enough company to sustain supply for the demand? if this grows into a Pokemon sized phenomenon, will they be able to handle it?

What' would stop them from hiring people

What is Yokai Watch and why is it so popular?

Is it a watch or is it a game? Medals? Books? Movie?

All of the above. Think about how the pokemon craze spawned tons of merchendise. It was a game first, but now theres anime, manga, toys (including the Yokai Watch itself) and other stuff for kids to go crazy over.

Its about a boy who gets a watch that lets him see Yokai, monsters that cause mischief in the town he lives in. He can use the watch to befriend Yokai, which can be used to battle other Yokai. They can also be found in an ingame Gacha machine apperently. Theres evolution and it has RPG combat, so the series is frequently compared to Pokemon. Apparently it's more popular than Pokemon with the elementary school audience right now in Japan.

I still can't for the life of me see why this is so popular. I get the Pokemon parallels, but just don't see how that translated to the success it's achieved.

Of course that may be down to the fact I think it's art style is fuck ugly, which puts me off it entirely.

the anime "saved" this franchise, right?

Yeah exactly. The first Game bombed at first, selling i think around 20k first week, but once the Anime started airing, the sales went up, and it went on selling a Million Units a year later

@Omiletter: Thanksfor the Info!

I can't wait for this to balloon to as big as Pokémon is. Nothing like some friendly competition to make both Pokémon and Youkai Watch the best they can be.

it sold 300k before the anime, same as Fantasy Life, for new IP's in Japan 300k is a very good result

and not, the anime didn't save the franchise cause Youkai Watch was planned as a multimedial project, game, anime, manga, medals, arcade

and all above can be found on wikipedia.....

I know it was planned as Cross-Media Franchise, but it had a very slow start until it was really crossmedia.

It actually sold 53k First Week and not 20k and managed to reach 125k one Month later. Wich means, that it took around 4 Months to sell those additional 175k. I don't think thats that great of an result.

Look, my point was that the Games sold very slow by itself. I even remember people here being suprised how Yokai Watch exploded in the Charts once the Anime started airing, so i don't think that i'm alone with that opinion

the game didn't exploded when the anime started (january 2014) but it had a slowly boost week after week from the end of January, selling around 20k a week in Feb, 40k a week in Mar (when medals were launched on the market iirc) and had a peak in April when it reached again the top spot after its release, first title to do that since Super Mario Bros Famicom Mini 10 years ago
so basically your statement is not correct, cause YW didn't explode immediately, but thanks to the rising popularity of the anime it became a long seller title

and in 2013 sales were not bad, I say it again, 300k for a new IP is a very good result, also YW was launched in July but in December it was still on the chart, so it had already some legs, smaller but steadily sales.
