Your body and gaming as you age (40+ gamers opinions' solicited, all input welcome)

I don't find that I have any issues with my body but that my peripherals have gotten more shit while tripling in price.

So my oldness is reflected in "They don't make em like they used to" (before everything went to China).

The tight controller and/or button grip is the worst. They should make a light electrocution feature if it detects when you are exerting too much force.

Otherwise do strength training and/or running. Stretches are good for your back.

Very few people on this planet knows how to fix back pain problems, but I'm one of them. Around 15 years ago in my twenties I had back pain just after 2-3 hours of sitting on the chair, but I have learned what it takes to fix my posture and strengthen my spine muscles, and since then I dont have any back pain even after 12 hours of sitting. I have also straightened my spine and went from very bad forward head posture to perfectly straight posture.

Most people think sitting is not healthly but in reality human body is also perfectly build for sitting. The only problem is most people sit in the worst possible way and they think they need the most expensive chair with comfortable backrest support because otherwise their back with hurt. In reality it's the other way around, because your back will hurt only when your muscles will get weak and this is exactly what will happen if you will sit with backrest support for months and years (your chair will do the work instead of your muscles and that's not good in the long run). Also if you will sit with backrest support your spine vertebrae cant align correctly because your pelvis will be always rotated into posterior tilt. People sit years and years on twisted spine and then they wonder why they back hurts!

Human spine dont need any backrest support, but if your spine is already in bad condition and your muscles are weak then it will be IMPOSSIBLE to sit straight right away. Such person need to slowly build his muscles and it will take some time until spine will straighten.

How to straighten your spine? You have to learn how perfect posture looks like and when you will stop straining your spine, gravity will start fixing your spine for you without any additional exercises. The thing is sitting or walking with correct posture is the exercise and you do it everyday! People do all kinds of exercises in order to fix their spine, but 15 minutes of exercises per day cant cant counterbalance entire day of slounching!

But correct sitting posture is not everything. Many adults also have teeth in very bad condition and if you want to straighten your spine then you also need to fix your jaw (teeth). Teeth are extremely important to human body, but not only because they chew food, but also because skull is using jaw as a lifting mechanism. If your teeth are perfectly healthly, your jaw will be able to rise your skull above torso level without any problems (and you will have very long neck in the mirror). With damaged teeth skull will start droping forward (forward head posture) and then spine starts compressing and twisting (scoliosis).

Below picture shows two pictures taken the same day, before and after jaw correction (this young boy had all teeth, but he had to wear correction until his teeth has aligned correctly). When skull is aligned correctly, then the rest of the body will follow.

If someone want to fix their spine I can recommend these two books for a good start:
-Kathleen Porter, natural posture for pain free life
-Esther Gokhale, 8 steps to a pain free back.

But remember guys, these books will only teach you how perfect posture look like, but you also have to fix your teeth. Teeth are extremely important and without this step it will be much harder (if not impossible) to fully fix your spine. Good luck.

The only thing I've noticed declining is my vision (just turned 43). It's like a switch hits at age 40 and you start squinting at stuff and then you're in glasses. Had perfect vision all my life, BETTER than perfect even (20/15 or whatever it is). I blame phones.

I don't have any physical pain from playing but I've never been a big marathon gamer. I can play 2-3 hours a day at most and be fine with it. I play single player story games as if they're 30-60 minute episodes of TV shows and just stop at a logical place each night and pick it up the next (doing that with TLoU2 right now). I never understood how people could post and clamor in anticipation for years for something like Red Dead Redemption 2 just to marathon it and beat it in 2 days and move on.

I do play a lot of multiplayer like Call of Duty now, more than I ever did in my youth which seems uncommon to most people who really went hard in their teens and 20s and started to slow down later. Really picked things up over the quarantine with Modern Warfare 19 and then Warzone and Cold War. I'm definitely not the best but saw myself get good enough to be top of the leaderboards consistantly enough. It's almost like brains over brawn in a lot of these games I find though, if you're smarter than the other guys you don't have to sweat out who pulls the trigger first or has the best aim. Positioning, communication, strategy, etc, all more important than who has the twitchiest thumbs.

Multiplayer to me though is really just an excuse to sit around and bullshit with my old buddies and drink and talk. It's the social aspect I like and keeps me mentally together.

People blame phones / computers / books for their vision problems but only because very few people have real knowledge about how human body works. Viewing distance is not as big problem as you may think, at worst your eyes will strain and quality of vision will drop but (most people dont know that) it will rebuild as soon as you will start looking into a distance, so in reality your viewing distance habits have nothing to do with quality of your vision.

In human body everything is interconnected and the real reason why people have eyesight problems has everything to do with your spine and teeth condition (posture depends on teeth), because compressed and twisted spine strains your muscles in entire body (including eye muscles) and from that point eye muscles can no longer relax when you will look into a distance and that's the real reason of your eyesight problems.

I have exercises that can relax eye muscles and whats interesting even people with severe nearsightedness can see perfectly during this exercise (because when you relax your eye muscles they will reshape your eyeball and cornea in just few seconds and then your eyes can see perfectly). But this is only mechanical relaxation (during exercise), so as soon you will stop relaxation exercise eye muscles will strain and vision quality will reverse again.

In order to improve eyesight permanently your eye muscles must be relaxed permanently as well and it can only happen when you will remove the root cause of strained eye muscles and that's your spine. You can fix your eyesight at any age naturally and many people have done that, but it's not so easy because it requires fixing your spine problems first. I can can assure you, if you will fix your spine, your eyesight will get better.

I have more time to play vidya games, and more patience, but I also have less intrigue and enchantment.

My biggest issue is "They did this better in that other older game", frankly, alongside "been there, done that"...

This is so much me lol. Because really, video games are starting to reach the point which movies and music already have long time ago, where everything has already been done, now it's just the same old stuff you already experienced so many times, just better executed, with better graphics etc. That's why it's so good/important to take a break from time to time.

I just have no time at all anymore. I can't sit to play 2 hours straight without feeling already tired because the next morning I need to be well-rested for another day of work. Well, the same can't be said about my weekends. When I have the urge, I play for 6-7 hours straight, then a brief stop to cook something, eat, clean, bathing, then back to gaming for another few hours. Can't say I didn't feel my butt hurt from long session from time to time.

I'm in my late 20s, so I can still keep up this reckless schedule when I want to, but I started to exercise again after years of sedentarism post my college days. My body is all hurting from trying to build my physique again. I'd hate to enter my 30s and battle against my body when my metabolism finally slows down. I've high metabolism and am genetically prone to be fit but not beefy. Meaning, that at the same time I can gain my muscles with ease, I tend to lose them the same way. So If I want to keep on gaming the way I do, I better have a body ready for those long sessions. I can't say I will ever grow out of gaming, it is my hobby, even when I'm not playing.

noah caldwell gervais is a pretty good example of what happens whe na metabolism falls off a cliff but we keep our butts glue'd to chairs playing games (in his case for a living, poor guy)

Im now 37...i grew up playing cs , tfc ,tribes , unreal tournament, quake etc etc....i cant play any of these anymore, just haven't got the movement or aim at all, I've moved over to more tactical shooters like insurgency, squad, etc....but even then i struggle to get kills, i feel like i cant even react in time or see the person who wastes me....aging sucks
