Yu Suzuki and Mark Cerny talk Shenmue III strategy?!

Shenmue 3 would be vastly different than what it originally was for Shenmue 1&2. Shenmue is basically an detective adventure game with slightly different outcomes based on player success, failure, or the process in which the player solves a problem/objective. While I personally loved that type of gameplay and style, it would be a hard sell for any newcomers currently.

Shenmue 3 being made now as a PS4 exclusive could entail a Heavy Rain type of game where there's dialog choices with certain NPC's, instead of questioning any and all NPC's. QTE's would still be a central mechanic during cutscenes, combat would be identical or resemble what was created for Shenmue 1&2.

Basically, more spectacle with characters and character interactions, less interaction and exploration overall, open environments would still be in, less detective work more interrogation or branching conversations, updated but similar combat system.

Shenmue 3 wouldn't be much different from a more open world Heavy Rain with realistic time cycle and fighting game (straight out of VF5) sections added in.

Not that hard a sell, imo... if not for the fact that it would be the third chapter in an unknown series, something not even R* has been able to overcome with Max Payne 3.

guys...my heart cant take this every few weeks.

this is also not the first time these two legends have shared words on the subject

You know that decade old dead series that was never on a PlayStation console?

Sony is totally gonna moneyhat a sequel guiz.

Neogaf, believe.

Mark is blessing sony; they don't own him

The Shenmue series has aged terribly, and a third would be archaic in this day and age.

your face has aged terribly avatarquote

It could be if Sega has to put more at stake financially than Sony to get the game looking pretty and getting developed.

For the love of god. Just getting over the last Shenmue HD batch of rumours and this comes up. FFS, Sega. Just give Suzuki the keys to the Yakuza engine and let him put this thing to bed.

What is your address? I'll mail you one superflatlolitron. O:

LIKE HELL I WILL >:U

I'd say there's a 50% chance that this is just a joke.

If true, do you guys think kickstarter (as previously hinted on) would be involved?

The saddest thing is that I want so hard for it to be a 50/50 chance, that I want to believe it. It's #teamcg all over again. It's all happening again so soon.

i have no idea why people still think it would cost nearly that much

What is it going to be? A game that runs on the Dreamcast engine? If it's something modern then it's going to be very expensive. Most games today don't even have the attention to detail that Shenmue had.

I don't even fucking care anymore. I don't remember what the fuck happened in Shenmue 1 and 2, and I wouldn't even mind if all it was was a simple text adventure that finished off the plot. Whatever. Go play Yakuza or something.

I'm sure a cupboard opening and plate rotation simulator wouldn't be that expensive to make nowadays.

This is honestly where I'm at. At the time Shenmue 1&2 both had extremely unique pacing and storytelling, and I won't forget how awesome it was to play through those games.

But now I've experienced so much that while Shenmue 1&2 are still unique, they don't feel special or even great anymore.

Lost all credibility.

I'd be down for a visual novel game. Or something like Hotel Dusk.

Ideally yes it would use DC quality assets, it doesn't even need to be a physical copy. Big budget graphics are what's killing gaming

Those big budgets are caused by gross mismanagement and the business end of game companies treating the industry like a Casino, bloated budgets aren't just from straight up development anymore.

It's how development is handled and how lucky companies feel that their next title could make more money than the last one.

I do not know why, but it almost feels like the whole gaming industry gets some sort of pleasure from messing with Shenmue fans... :(...

50%? Nice way to lowball estimates there :p. Seriously though, it probably is just a fun pastime for Shenmue fans hunting... They do not need a hunting dog to get us all flying up in excitement just to shoot us down again and again.

In a way I feel like that Scrubs episode where J.D. takes a ride from the Janitor who drives him into the wilderness before throwing him out and when J.D. asks him why he would do that he says "it has been four years, do you still not get how THIS works?"...
