Zelda Skyward Sword Spoiler Thread: Retelling the Legend without the black bars

One thing that always bothered me: Right before you enter the area where you fight Demise, he says something to the extent of: "I've waited eons for my return, I can spare a few minutes". But if this is the past, wasn't he just sealed not too long ago? It wouldn't have been eons.

He hits you with 3 normal attacks and if you shield bash all of them you can get in some hits, but if you mess up like 2 shield bashes you're shield breaks.
Strange, in phase 2 for me after I shield bashed his first 2 attacks he'd always raise his sword up like he was going to do a 3rd strike, but then he'd stop. If I tried to attack, he'd electrocute me.

So you kill Demise in the past...shouldn't that erase all of SS from happening? If he's dead back then, then there's nothing to be sealed away and break out in the present, right?

Wait 25 years for the next version of Hyrule Historia, when they'll explain this is another triforcation of the timeline to accomodate the inconsistencies of the next Zelda!

600 points? Really? I'm expected to get four-hundred points with that shitty pumpkin tosser?

Seriously the mini-games this time around frustrate the fuck out of me. Fucking shitty motion nonsense.

I finally finished this game last night. But then I saw hero mode and became excited and clicked "Yes" for everything without reading. Now I don't think I have my last save anymore:(

Yep, its the shitty motion nonsense, not the fact you might not be any good at it. I mean, I only got to 750 points after some practice and aiming at the same spot right after he let go of every pumpkin. I would have gotten 2000 with regular controls. My only issue with this mini-game was that he never threw them along the same path and I would actually have to aim and not just time it properly. Damn game, making me be good at things.

That being said, Fun Fun Island is not much fun fun at all but not due to the motion controls, just how difficult it is in general.

So does you cheesing it make you good at it?

Not that I'm saying it isn't a good minigame, I think the pumpkin tossing is the best minigame (probably the only good one) of the bunch testing your skill with the bow and arrow.

correct about everything
I disliked pumpkin tossing. In other Zelda games, most recently Spirit Tracks, the bow mini-game is always my favourite and one that I could play just for fun, but this time I just got my goddamn heart piece and bailed.

Hardly, in fact it probably took me longer doing it my way than the more 'proper' way but I was too far in to alter my approach. I beat it within the confines of what the mini-game allowed me to do but I am certainly not going to qualify for the Hyrule Olympics or anything. My point was that blaming the motion controls (assuming they had not lost calibration) is blaming the wrong part of the equation.

Yeah... waiting for a character to slowly toss pumpkins and angling your wiimote is so much fun...

Not.

It's a pain in the ass. I don't remember the mini-games in TP being as lame. I mean, fuck, I'd love to snowboard again.

Totally agreed. They are totally incapable of writing a story. As you said, they introduce so much stuff and then they do absolutely nothing with it for the rest of the game (birds, Zelda/Link romance, Groose's friends, The academy, the water race I don't even remember their name, Grahim...) . In fact, there's only like 2 or 3 instances in the whole game where the story progresses: the slow ass beginning, a few hours later and somewhere near the end.

I agree with the underused elements.

The birds and the academy should have been more important parts of the game.
Even if it is taking a few random lessons and tests between the dungeons. It could even improve your loftwing like they do at the end. More boosts, more speed, etc. making the world more easy to travel through as the game progresses is always a good thing.

I kept hoping for birdback archery.

Was there any way to "resolve" the storyline between Pipit and his mother? It was kinda fucked up when you learned he was working overtime to make ends meet, and his mother would instead just spend it all on people to clean her house because she was lazy.

Yeah, I would have liked seeing more story elements from the start properly fleshed out. I absolutely loved the characters and community they set up. Sadly it was mostly all ditched for the "save the world" story. Which I did enjoy, but they didn't have to neglect nearly everything from the beginning.

Agreed. I was sort of hoping for a ALTTP style montage ending showing everyone.

same, though it was nice seeing what zelda was up to the whole time. didnt expect that really

would love a majoras mask like sequel for SS using the same engine and stuff. there are more areas on the surface that need exploring!

I would love a MM style Zelda game (that is to say plenty of sidequests), with loads of islands to explore (like in Skies of Arcadia) using the same engine and motion controls. DO IT NINTENDO.

FUCKING FUND IT.

I sometimes wonder if I'm the only one who actually finds the side content more enjoyable than the main dungeons.

I've been wondering, could it be possible to get the Sacred Water for Faron BEFORE meeting? Like, the very first time you get to the Sky Temple, could you just get a bottle a get the water before going out? That way you completely skip the "returning to the temple" part?

I wish Skyloft were more active. There's a lot to do but characters are just standing around in the same place all the time. Some Offset Island/Clock Town stuff would've been cool where characters are roaming around.

You mean like the agenda from MM ? Yeah it would've been cool, and it could've changed according to your game completion.

Also I have just a thing to say : the Song Of Storms from OOT is making my head hurt. Where does the song come from ? Was it a different person (seeing the ocarina isn't a rare instrument in OoT) who taught it to the mill man ?

From what I've read it's not possible.

I would absolutely love if Nintendo released a 'expansion pack' of sorts. It would probably be in disk form, but hey... They could focus on sky exploration and some new ground areas, lots of new enemies, and big side quests. In other words, everything they missed out on the first time.

They could get Grezzo to do that while they or Retro are working on Zelda Wii U. :)

Just finished. I liked the story and connection to Minish cap>OoT

Item notifications. WHAT. THE. FUCK. How did Ninendo let this go thought to final release like that? Every time you pick something up. Game stops, "You've Picked Up Some Useless Bullshit!", "Here! Look at how much useless bullshit you have!". Really annoying.

Underused areas. The Minecarts! also the entire desert ocean in general. Visited there once the entire time. I would have loved to see more exploration of this place.

Flying the bird sucked. It just wasn't fun.

I liked the item upgrade system by catches bugs and collecting materials. That was a nice touch.

Minigames were pretty lame.

Some of the game is really amazing, however. The time shift stones/areas were a lot of fun as well as the final dungeon inside the statue.

I'm glad I played it for the story but I don't think I'll ever replay it. Wind Waker is still my #1 Zelda :p

I would have GREATLY preferred if Faron Woods never existed. I didn't mind the filler at the other regions, but the filler at the Faron Woods, BOTH TIMES, was BEYOND fucking terrible.

It's an ontological paradox. The song is information. It doesn't degrade, it is an idea that's sent around in a loop. There will never be a clear source of where this information came from, it just exists.

So Demise being sealed away in the Master Sword, what's that about? Ganondorf is already around before Link gets the sword in OoT, so it's not like his power has been 'released' at any point.
In Wind Waker, Ganondorf states that removing the master sword from its pedestal unlocks his full powers, which is probably the part of Demise that is sealed within the sword. A similar thing probably happens to Demise's other reincarnations whenever Link takes out the sword.

The Song of Storms is given an origin in Majora's Mask. It's written by the composer ghosts in Ikana Valley. It doesn't seem to relate to OoT's version of the song though, as Link learned it from the windmill man and the windmill man learned it from Link. So yeah, paradox.

Don't know if anyone else noticed (or if its been discussed to death), but when the credits are rolling, you can play along with the music with the harp by holding "A" and moving the WiiMote.

Just finished the game. May go back and do the rest of the sidequests later. I'd imagine I still have a decent bit to do, as I ended the game with 15 hearts. Have you guys who went through all of them found the sidequests to be worthwhile? I'm kinda dreading the minigames, but still...
I think I'll at least let it sit a bit before diving back in for completion.
Anyway, only thing that REALLY annoyed me in the game was the sacred water run. The game didn't really need any of the bits that felt like padding like that, honestly, as it was long enough anyway. Still, I was surprised to see how few actual "dungeons" the game had, considering its length.
Also, I was totally expecting Groose to stay with past Impa, as it really would've fit with his character development IMO. And... I guess Skyloft just kinda hangs out up there for everyone to die off, while Link and Zelda repopulate the surface?
Still, had a LOT of fun with the game, and it was amazing seeing things like the Ghirahim battles in a Zelda game, seeing how shallow the combat usually is (REALLY glad I got the invincible shield in time for the end game!)

On the score of repopulating the surface, nothing says others from Skyloft can't come down and choose to live there. Groose did. It seems unlikely that nobody else would ever go downstairs to explore, now that they know the surface exists, and the cloud barrier can't stay there forever (since it's gone in later ages).

The Skyloftians become the Wind Tribe from TMC and live on some of the clouds themselves, but those 'solid' clouds are gone by the time of TP, so I guess they faded away gradually over time.

It would seem that the cloud barrier was simply put in place to prevent Demise from reaching Skyloft and the Triforce and to protect the people from Demise. Its natural for it to dissapear once Demise was defeated. I think it the barrier was released in the ending.

I just finished the game. I look forward to skimming through all of this thread, but I want to throw this out there and see how it bounces. I'm sure there are people here that picked up on stuff a lot better than I did.

Am I correct in assuming that Skyward Sword has the first Link and the first Zelda, ever? Since this Zelda is, I'm assuming, the first mortal form of the goddess Hylia, all later Zeldas are simply reincarnations of Hylia, right?

And did this game show us the original creation of the master sword from the goddess sword using the flames, or did the flames merely return the sword to it's true form or something?

I posted this in another thread, but its pretty relevant here too I think. The art book shows concept art for Zoras. They were dropped in favor of the squids, unfortunately.

Holy carp @ that ending battle. :O

Was beautiful. They really know how to make a Zelda ending epic and this one didn't disappoint.

Wonderful game, I think it took me the first dungeon to really get into it but once I was things flowed pretty nicely for me.

Just finished the game, hooray! Damn those chores I needed to do that kept me from playing. I'll skip Hero Mode I guess, backlog awaits. But it was a thoroughly satisfying experience. I won't put the Zeldas I've played in order. They all seem to have about the same level of quality to me where each entry has it's own set of strengths and drawbacks. SS doesn't have that great story or atmosphere, but it makes up for it with all those gameplay variations it throws at you and a vast amount of puzzles.

Oh good, someone gif'd it in this thread:

That was a great scene. It totally reminded me of a specific music video, but I just can't identify it (Janet Jackson?). At the end of the video, the dancers sleep on some stairs leading up to an apartment entrance or something and then an old man comes along and acts totally like Ghirahim.

I just finished the game. I enjoyed it but there a couple of things that I disliked:

1) All the fetch quests. They even managed to add fetch quests in the fetch quests.

2) The Silent Realm crap. I hated it since if you got caught you had to start over. Shit stresses me out.

3) Fi. I dislike the way she speaks. She sounds like a robot with all of her probability crap. Also I hate how she has to remind me that my lives or batteries are low.

4) Ghirahim. I hated his fights except for the last one. I honestly find him annoying as hell, and hate that you have to shake the wiimote to remove his grasp on your sword. Even worse is that you had to fight him twice.

5) Fighting The Imprisoned so many times. It's also a crappy looking boss. Don't know who green lighted that design...

There is one thing that also kinda pissed me and it was the boss trial to get the Hylian Shield (how can the dragon even have that shield btw? Isn't it supposed to be created in the future when Link and Zelda found Hyrule?). Anyways, I was expecting the shield to be given after defeating all of the bosses...not up to the before last one. When the dragon said, that at the next round you get the shield, he worded as something like a" not too shabby absolutely sturdy shield". I wasn't even sure that was the Hylian Shield since there was one boss after that and why would he say not too shabby? I though it was just a very good shield. So I continued, beat the last boss and he gave me 2000 rupees. I felt like smashing my tv since I had to redo it all over again.

You just yank upwards once with the Wiimote, no need to shake.

And damn it, we never found out in the end what's the whole deal with Zelda wanting to talk something to Link before Ghirahim screws things up. What something? Gaaahhhh.
It's pretty obviously she wanted to say to Link how much she likes him.

At least in my eyes anyway.

Is that not how others saw it? I'm not even sure if the ending even alludes to them getting together? I guess it's open to interpretation.

Link's big goofy smile at the ending just made me think that he was finally going to "hit that".

The whole ending was one hell of a sexual innuendo:

Groose and companions flying off, leaving Zelda and Link some long overdue privacy

Zelda: I want to rebuild the surface, and make it as before! Link what do you want to do now
Link: ... sleazy smile...

fade out into credits.

Or at least that's my interpretation of that smile lol.

Link's big goofy smile at the ending just made me think that he was finally going to "hit that".

Great minds think alike^^

Just beat it an hour ago. Why did they do nothing with Levias (or whatever his name is) being the Wind Fish? Maybe he has to go into Link's mind/soul for him to use the Triforce and that's why one of his reincarnations dreams of him later on?

Also, Groose x Impa creates Gerudo having red hair. But nope! Didn't do it :/

I wonder if Demise being in the Master Sword is why it always needs to be strengthened. He can't escape, but his power weakens it over time.
