PS4 Tops January 2017 US Sales

That quote isn't from MS. That's something Gamespot added.

“Thanks to continued support by our fans, 2017 is off to a strong start as Xbox One game hours grew 21 percent year-over-year,” Mike Nichols, corporate vice president of Xbox Marketing, noted in a statement sent to GamesBeat. “In addition, in the U.S., Xbox One had its best January to date and was the only eighth generation console that saw growth in January compared to the prior year according to NPD Group. Team Xbox is committed to delivering the best gaming experiences for our fans.”

This is the exact quote.

Microsoft said 2017 is off to a "strong start" for the Xbox One as the number of hours players spent playing games on the console grew 21 percent year-over-year.

How long until MS starts touting the number of hours people spent with the system in standby mode, or how many button presses their controllers get?

Sure, why not?

lol. what is the original source for this?

Lol these guys cant stand getting beaten by Sony every month. they thought they had the momentum last year and then Sony released the Pro and got those extra sales that pushed them over the edge. And they cannot believe that they wont have an answer to the pro until fall.

Masterful move by Sony execs to inject some new life into the sales.

You must not have seen their PR statement last month.

Their new PR method seems to try to continuously compare their sales with PS4 sales in a way that makes them seem like they're winning, but at the end of the day, the PS4 is still selling more units.

I have seen it, but they never mentioned the PS4 directly, only things like best selling console in the second half of year or only console with YoY growth

Surprisingly bitter for a piece of MS PR. You'd think they'd be used to losing by now, but it seems like the status quo is actually getting harder for them to handle as time goes on.

february is going to be a blow out for Sony
It should be but Xbox should have been down in January too so who knows. One thing is for sure, software doesn't really matter for Xbox in the U.S. They could literally have no exclusives for years and still do well here.

They could have sold 1 console more in January of this year compared to last year for all we know.

Their PR statements feel so desperate.

MS PR has always been desperate. Difference is that normally they hide it well through their MAU or whatever other statistic they can find. Here, its just so lazy and half-asses that it just reeks of Loser Talk.

Word from Satya Nadella must have come down: Start being profitable or else. Would explain a lot of their recent decisions.

haha, thats so great!

yeah, unfortunately the ps4 is a beast, this gen has been won by sony with no big efforts.

congrats to that. i admit, with tlg, gravity rush2 and nier they got me good.
sad for ms that they lost scalebound and the pretty much only reason in general for a lot of fast-paced-action fans to get an X1.

Any ways congrats the ps4 and sony, this year will be good to them. They flipped those turned tables and survived countless changing tides.

Wait NPD is today???

Too much for XB1 S moment lol

The XB1S is keeping the X1 up YoY regularly, so the momentum is in fact there. PS4, on the flip, has maintained much of its own "momentum" of being down YoY yet again.

Can you direct me to where in the article Microsoft mentions Sony?

Are you sure? Their console has been showing growth the last 8 months compared to the previous year. That's something to be proud of. The one S has been selling well. Throwing in jabs at Sony are whatever.

Just feels like emphasizing the gap is a bit of an own goal.

Ps4 winning US, imagine WW.

I can say that here in Portugal they took Xbox off shelves to save space for Ps4 and will see about Switch, where I live stores are no longer selling Xbox software or hardware.

They're down YoY in January...after coming off of their most successful holiday period.

It's literally all about how you look at the big picture, which Microsoft doesn't do with these PR statements.

The same applies for PS4. Consoles that need exclusives are Nintendo one's.

Someone want to highlight the part of the article where Microsoft mentions Sony in a quote? I must be missing something here.

They've been down the last 5 or so months

Xbox One S continues to deliver growth. Great model, probably the best Slim console of all time.

Lets not over reach it, last January Xbox one sales practically stoped due to end of the firesale of Holiday 2015 so it will be difficult to sell less consoles

They never mentioned PS4 by name, it was Gamespot who added that blurb about PS4 at the end but people think that's a actual quote from MS. That was my point.

PS4 has been regularly down YoY for months on end since mid-way last year. Yes, they had a stellar holiday (globally), but that doesn't change where they've been for the past half year.

So, what *other* big picture should we be looking at in an NPD thread?

But honestly, not difficult to do when xbox one og was selling terribly in its early years. Hard for ps4 to top it self when it was selling so much.

I'm not overreacting, it's a fact.

About being the best Slim model is just my opinion about the hardware, I don't remember a Slim model being so good as Xbox One S.

True, but even still. It still ended up being the best selling console last year overall. Xb1s is seeing increased momentum, but it's not even enough to overtake the PS4 the last 3 months. The gap is only getting larger.

In the US they were down last holiday. In fact, PS4 has been down YoY every month since June 2016.
