Yes, Tim Soret is a gamergater.

And, no, outing him as a gg scumbag isn't a thread derail as it will be important information for people who may be otherwise interested in the game.

I, for one, think the game looks interesting but knowing Tim is a cunt means I cannot buy it with a clear conscience.

So I won't be buying it.

I'm definitely giving it a miss. He claims his beliefs gave changed, and it's important to acknowledge that people do grow and change, but this smells like bullshit to me.

Uh, why? You don't need to play devil's advocate when there's already people saying what you did. That's just called lending them your support.

oh uh sorry. I think that's mostly me who misunderstood the term (I thought it was "defending the underdog" but I was wrong ! sorry ! English ain't my first language too and I sometimes forget about that :( )

Regardless, yeah, I understand you guys on this and quite frankly i'm still baffled. I guess...it's completely stupid and I know it.

I still heavily disagree with the stuff he says and I won't buy this game at launch without some reviews and such. I guess my point is that I can see what kind of dude he is too and I can put myself in his shoes as I was as shortsighted as he was years ago (Like I said, I'll take that L for that). He doesn't seem like some "frothing at the mouth" GGer but some guy with social issues ignorance and I just wanna avoid the "shotgun against a rabbit" approach. But again, that is not to say that I won't criticize his stance or the plot if it mirrors it and then discard his game

This will be the killing point - despite all the controversy, the world building will be seemingly at odds with itself. A dystopian society that watches and monitors itself - but is not controlled by governments or corporations? Gamification being used in day to day interactions, but by whom? A world where women are able to reproduce with artificial uterus's, and have men regressed in their roles? A world where we are all seemingly supplied by basic income (and hence no longer motivated to create) and this will lead to a world devoid of creativity? Whos going to take this seriously?

That I completely concurr with. So many things seem completely odd. The biggest being "universal income kills creativity". I'm biased because socialist but still, also as a gamedev and artist working basically for free for years, and knowing he's also an indie, I'm kinda confused why that stance would be prevalent

Indeed. I mean, removing all political bias for a moment, I thought a news site repeatedly outed for perpetrating false information, particularly information aimed to cause outrage, had no place of GAF.

I guess it's because nobody links Breitbart as something to support their arguments. Not many on GAF are that stupid.

Yeah man the truth is somewhere between "women should have equal rights" and "women are bad let's harass them"

Like, maybe women are just kinda bad and we should only oppress them a little! Moderation!

The bolded is simply true, full stop. The "truth" is not somewhere between those two points.

I think it's important to remember in times like this that no one person has the moral authority to decide what games should or should not exist for everyone else. We can voice our concerns, spread awareness of the creator's political leanings, and hope that people come to similar conclusions regarding supporting the product that some of us have. We can hope that the people involved see the error of their way, and even hope that the inevitable proceeds from the game are not used to further detrimental causes.

However, I don't feel it is morally justified to pressure Microsoft to drop this game, as at the end of the day I believe most would not want to let a platform holder decide what is morally acceptable for games to portray.

(ps. I'm an anarcho-feminist)

I don't think they should block the release on the XB but I would like MS to drop the marketing agreement they have with this scumbag.

Can anyone make a TL;DR of the thread?

Outside of knowing this is one of the most incredibly looking game i've seen in a long time artistically, i have a feeling this is not the debate..

He is a Gamergater that has filled his game with his shit ideology.

These incidents always make me sad because they make me realize how many bigots there are in the industry. Some of the comments on this thread and on Twitter are just sad.

english is not my native language, so i have a hard time to understand the tweet and what it says. what does it mean?

It's basically this:

"Wow this game is pretty!"

*the director supports gamergate and finds feminism to be overblown*

"Uh wow, maybe I can separate the art from the artist...?"

*tweets suggesting that the narrative of the game will be seen through that lens*

"FUCK"

"Devil's advocate" means "I'll bring up this argument I don't actually believe in, just as a mental exercise, for people think about the topic from another point of view".

Fantastapotamus

Wrong about commas, wrong about everything
Yep! Spot on! I swear this both sides stuff makes me so mad

Yep. "Both sides" only makes sense when one side isn't clearly right.

Every time they sit some random climate-change denier on a table with an actual, you know, scientist, my blood starts boiling.

Fuck my life. Read the first page of this thread, then this last page. Don't think I've ever seen a swing this hard and this fast. Why can't we just have a cool modern Flashback. 😩

"Devil's advocate" means "I'll bring up this argument I don't actually believe in, just as a mental exercise, for people think about the topic from another point of view".

It also asserts that it's a view worth hearing and debating, which is the thing that most people don't understand, and is often why a lot of people get upset at devil's advocates.

Such a shame that both the in-game story and it's director is crazy, because based on the trailer this is probably the most beautiful pixel art I've ever seen, and it looks extremely fluid.

MS won't drop marketing, and they probably weren't (and aren't) aware of his deranged personal views.

day one on steam. great atmosphere and soundtrack by Lorne, i'm so sold. hopefully most of the soundtrack is by him.
wish there was a portable version though :{ vita or switch, whatever. maybe in the future.

Oooh wow, okay yeah that's completely different than what I thought (even AFTER I googled it)

The biggest being "universal income kills creativity".

Yeah, I don't get that at all. Surely it would give people more time to be creative in without having to worry about making ends meet? Like, I get that struggle can be conducive to art, but still.

I really hope funding for the game doesn't get cut due to this backlash.

I'm already seeing calls for MS to pull out on twitter

I am so disappointed by the creators view points. The quote ""My game takes place in a future where 'progressivism' has spiraled out of control" is insanity.

People have covered the basics already but if you want more specifics:
Looks like it's even worse than that.

I was the one who first posted in the GB thread about it when i saw stuff on Twitter but it was just rumblings; this just keeps escalating beyond what I expected.

The creator is telling you what the game is about

How do we separate?

Our main character in The Last Night is bisexual.

I sure hope the author isn't angling for the direction with this characterization that I think he's angling for.

yikes

I realised he probably had French tweets people hadn't caught:

B3iXVVp.png

(the tweets he's replying to have been deleted)

1. The only racist I see here creating a racial hierarchy because someone is black or white here is you.

2. The real racists are the degenerates of your kind who see everything through the prism of race and gender.

(The next tweets are in the context of an "anti colonial summer camp" in France for POC which did not welcome the participation of white folk.)
zEtozEX.png

Tim1. Please tell me you're not defending the summer camp, Baptiste.

Baptiste2. I 200% do, and I really dislike seeing everybody up in arms about it. "Oh my god, the oppressed are organising!"

Tim3. Wow, you've totally bought into the rhetoric of oppression and state racism. Disappointing.

(he then suggests Baptiste read an article he links)
csh6fr1.png

Baptiste4. I read it, it's mediocre and shallow. Whether or not it chaffs your butt, institutional racism exists and is still a reality.

Baptiste5. Obviously, people who don't live it scream when say that, which in itself justifies the existence of a camp where speech is protected.

Tim6. That's anti living-together. I miss the 90s when I was a kid and we were all mixed and never thought about colour or religion.

And, re: Zoe Quinn
PinPuLu.png

I don't know if you're aware, but it's a hot topic. Zoe Quinn was sexually harassing men all while crying sexism.

Yup, may people here seem unable to entertain an idea without agreeing with it.

That's not what I was getting at. What I was getting at, was some ideas aren't worth entertaining. Period. To entertain them gives them unearned legitimacy, which is what bad ideas thrive on.

Unless you mean the people advocating for the devil agree with the ideas they're advocating and are just using it as a poorly constructed shield to avoid the appearance of having skin in the game, in which case: Yes. So much yes.

I thought the thread blew up because everyone was loving the game and was happy it was getting such positive reception....

... and then i saw.....

I came into the thread knowing this shit and took some perverse pleasure in seeing the wheels come off.
