WASHINGTON—The White House is expected to send guidance to the Pentagon in coming days on how to implement a new administration ban on transgender people in the military, issuing a policy that will allow Defense Secretary Jim Mattis to consider a service member’s ability to deploy in deciding whether to kick them out of the military.

The White House memo also directs the Pentagon to deny admittance to transgender individuals and to stop spending on medical treatment regimens for those currently serving, according to U.S. officials familiar with the document.

The 2½-page memo gives Mr. Mattis six months to prepare to fully implement the new ban, according to these officials.

Mr. Mattis under the new policy is expected to consider “deployability”—the ability to serve in a war zone, participate in exercises or live for months on a ship—as the primary legal means to decide whether to separate service members from the military, the officials said.

Stop spending on medical services for acting members of the military presumably before they are formally kicked to the curb? Sounds like Trump.

Of all the things the President has done, this Transgender banning agenda has gotten me the angriest. Like, how fucking petty and hateful do you have to be to go out of your way to target people literally willing to lay their lives down for the country you're nominally in charge of?

This is nothing more than an evil, spiteful move. The GOP should be livid that Trump wants to go after the armed forces and reduce its strength, but none of them have the backbone to step up. Every one of them far greater cowards than any transgender person, who have had to go through untold torture just for existing.

Remember, folks... every move that the Trump administration deems fit to make is tied to the ENTIRE Republican party and everyone that voted for him or normalized his actions out of selfish interest (that includes you CNN).

You must treat them ALL with the same degree of scorn and distaste. And they must ALL pay the price when you have the opportunity to vote with your wallet or with your electoral power. They are ALL complicit. Even through their cowardice when they fail to act. Even when they throw empty shots at him in faux outrage. They are ALL equally guilty.

Is this shit even legal? XD
Trump doesn't know the meaning of right and wrong. He has no value system so those concepts are empty to him. Legality is merely an obstacle you throw money at to make it go away.

All of this. ALL OF THIS.

This is just pure evil but on top of that, the pettiness and sheer spite of it is breathtaking. There's no reason for this except hateful bigotry. This makes me so angry. Fuck Trump forever.

SCOTUS can decide that it is--that equal protection requires heightened scrutiny of gender identity based discrimination.

Right, but it requires a SC ruling, which seems unlikely given the current composition of the court, and without it, transgender people are still unprotected.

How can any GOP legislator or any republican voter still supporting Trump ever talk about how they care for those serving in the military if they shut their eyes to this?

This is pure evil.

Trans rights and issues just aren't important enough to the general public for it to catch on and become a SC-worthy issue. Even on the smaller scale of things, I'll bet this topic barely makes it through a few pages on 50ppp.

Kennedy tends to get these issues. If he's still around when this reaches the Court, there should be five votes against it.

I would just like to point out that the military pays for plastic surgery but transgender care is just a bridge too far? I have a personal friend that got implants for free and Tricare paid for it.

If somebody is willing to get shot for some reason, I say let them. This administration, all of em, is really its true self

He tends to get orientation issues. There's not a lot of evidence that he gets gender issues. Grimm would have been an indication, but they decided not to hear it, which doesn't really fill one with confidence. Anyway, got my fingers crossed that he stays in place and votes right.

Remember last time he announced this it was because Manafort was raided. Now it comes out his deputy chief of staff was trying to set up meeting with Russia today and this is floated again.
