i'm still waiting for the weight to give out on nintendo's success... it's got to come to an end at some point, right?

there's no way i ever envisioned the ds and wii outselling the psp and ps3

The DS no.... the snowball is really getting going.

The Wii may be a different story, but everything I've seen is that it should have big legs. Middle-aged women in my family talking about how cool it is, and a tech junkie who had just talked to me for 5 minutes about how "XBox is way better than PS2 because it has 'better graphics and a man-sized controller" said right afterwards that the Wii looks awesome and he was going to get one (unprompted by any comment from me).

if you exclude Wii, then it easily outsells everything else combined despite the PSP's best week in 12 months, despite the release of the PS3, and despite DSL shortages.

Yes, I know. I'm beginning to expect that what's going to happen is that sometime early next year, DS & Wii supplies are going to equalize, and for the rest of the year, DS sales = Wii sales. And everything else 100k or lower.

Im just glad the PSP did well. I dont expect it to make amazing strides, but that just shows with good talent anything can be done. I LOVE MGS:pO it remides me alot of Jagged Allance...

And I agree, they went head first with next gen, they had great ideas but in Japan at least excution is lacking outside a few titles. I think its gonna be at least a year then the big guns start showing up.

Frankly, I'm pretty tired of the mentality that GameFAQS as a unified whole is a bunch of morons.

Sure, the general boards are crap, and NGG is the place where logic goes to die, but you can generally get pretty good discussions on game-specific boards, especially for more obscure games.

You hit the nail on the head. NGG and the console-specific boards are where any logical reasoning is killed by blind trolling from dozens of alt accounts and fanboyism. Every now and then there are some good discussions on NGG/console-specific boards, but for every good discussion there are 5 worthless discussions.

But you are right about the game-specific boards, they are an asset in times in need.

I dont even frequent g-faqs boards anymore (i was in the animation board for a while then as that started to die, then the 4chan boys started to ruin every thing and now if its not a troll, drone, naruto, or bridget post, or another libertiane rant on its many social boards, to them it doesnt have any merit.) but the focused boards are the best but there starting to mess up (in the ds game boards, like PoR that is).

man.. looking at that handheld chart.... again, it has nothing to do with nintendo or being a fanboy... in the context of video game history, the DS' level of success is unprecedented. remember this kids.. when all of us old timers talk about the days of atari, NES, and SNES... the level of success and mindshare of the DS destroys all of those. it is selling almost 500K a week IN FREAKING JAPAN and looks on track to do close to 2M units in December in the US. I don't even want to think how crazy EU's sales are going to be for December. DS will probably sell over 4M units worldwide in the month of December alone. That is 1/6th and 1/5th of the XBox's and GCN's worldwide sales respectively....

in one month.

from a two year old system.

(and almost 40% of DC's worldwide sales. runs)

19000 in 3 weeks is far from bomb for a completely new franchise on a completely new console with a completely new concept.

Tingle RPG - DS - 204,000

No wonder Nintendo has decided to make Tingle's Balloon Fight DS....

Nice sales for everybody. MGS PO did great. Wii seems to sell out of control when they ship enough. Good thing Zelda and Wario went back up. Should pull good lifetime sales. Pokemon Wii also had good sales for a second week. Pokemon D/P are the biggest thing since rice. Wonder if it will hit 6 million? Both Lost Planet and Armored Core 4 sold around 30k it would seem from sinobi's blog. Sonic PS3/360 seems to be a flop. Oh well. Next weeks sales should be interesting.

Seriously.

High-production values. Check.

Great Voice Acting. Check.

Scenario and backbone of the game by the creator of Final Fantasy(Sakaguchi)? Check.

Music from one of the most reputable people in the industry (Uematsu) Check.

Art Style by one of the most famous and appreciated artists in the world (Toriyama). Check.

Best graphics of any RPG out there currently (although this one is somewhat arguable): Check

Traditional Gameplay, with fun new twists that sells in Japan when other games do it? Check.

All of this, a next generation console, a Lost Odyssey demo, and more RPG-promise than any of the other platforms for $250?

Well, apparently only 100K people think it's a good deal. They apparently would rather spend three times that amount and get a system with just as much potential, but nothing appealing currently out for play (arguably).

You can't seriously think that one awesome game on a generally unpopular system in Japan can make people suddenly want it over a system that already has 2 of the biggest exclusives that Japan wants? Seriously? It takes more than one game and we all know that. The problem is that MS (or whoever made it) will see poor Japanese sales and not market it as much, when in reality it will take a concerted effort to win the hearts and minds of the Japanese, not just one great game. It will take years of exclusives, 100s of quirky throw-away games, and every major developer and publisher besides Nintendo to back them while they're doing it. Perhaps if this game was available last year it might have been a bit different.

I commend them for the game but we can't possibly think that it would be enough to actually win mindshare in Japan, can we?

I never ever said I expected it to sell 500K. I'm saying that this is the ideal game that Japan wants. If it was released on the PS3, it would sell like hotcakes. Which is very obvious as to why: Playstation is long-time trusted console and Sony has become a respected console manufacturer in Japan and around the world for that matter. Sony is known for certain franchises, quality hardware, and great games in general in JPN and around the world, once again. I understand

However, I did expect Blue Dragon to be selling just a bit better than this. After, didn't people buy the xbox because of Halo?

Sure, PS3 has MGS4 and FFXIII (if those were the "2" you were speaking of), but neither of them are out yet, and the 360 has another 4-5 Sakaguchi RPG's in the pipeline as well. Not to mention all those other RPG's from respected people (Eternal Sonata-- guy from Grandia is working on it -- and Infinity Undiscovery which is being worked on by the ever-popular tri-ace).

Anyways, this is just a long-winded response just to say, "I know, but I was expecting BD to have sold a bit over 150K by now." I don't expect them to win a great deal of mindshare in Japan, no, I don't. However, I did expect sales to be slightly more optimistic for a game that Japan has been basically begging for (a new Sakaguchi/Toriyama/Uematsu game. Chrono Trigger/FFV influence in it too).

Is next week an up or down week? Was this the peak?
Nintendo said that they were shipping 1.5 Million DSL in December so that leaves ~350,000 units left if you only count the last 3 weeks. I would be surprised if next week is above 300,000 just due to supply issues.

Well said. I agree with everything except for the 150k expectations. I try to think of what would happen if Team Rockstar were to release an all-new GTA game that we all want very badly, but on the WonderSwan (or some other obscure device).

I mean. HELL. The 360 couldn't break a quarter of a million in an entire year. Blue Dragon isn't going to change that, and I'm pretty sure that's what you just said. The 360 is as foreign to the Japanese as j-pop is to Americans. It might sound funny and look kinda cool, but I certainly don't get it. Same thing, but reversed. They simply aren't interested, and one game isn't going to change it.

Now. If Microsoft could magically buy Square and Konami, maybe Capcom and then bump out about 100 games that the Japanese would be interested in, this would be a different story. But this isn't a thread about what-ifs.

haha. Hmm.......let me see if I can learn more about you through very outspoken statements.

Here's one:

PS3's 2007 lineup is breathtaking....it makes everything else (eggs, cheese, milk, apples, forks) pale in comparison.

(I don't necesarily agree with the above statement...)

This is true, but Halo occupied a more unique market position than Blue Dragon does. Halo was pretty much the one choice if you wanted a really good single-player and multiplayer first person shooter on a console; there really wasn't anything like that available on GameCube or PS2. Blue Dragon doesn't enjoy that same kind of genre exclusivity. People know there will be tons of big-name console RPGs on PS3; one of them, even one with a good pedigree, probably isn't a system seller for most.
