old? if not, GAF is really falling off these days.

Epic Games' Gears of War emerged as the evening's big winner last night at the 10th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards hosted by The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS), taking eight Interactive Achievement Award statues, including Game of the Year honors.

Nintendo's Wii Sports pulled in the second most awards with three wins at the event hosted by comedian Jay Mohr at "The Joint" in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV, and attended by Gamasutra representatives.

The results of the major awards for the night are as follows:

Game Of The Year Awards
Game Of The Year: Gears Of War (Epic/Microsoft)
PC Game Of The Year: Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Bethesda, 2K Games)
Console Game Of The Year: Gears Of War (Epic/Microsoft)
Handheld Game Of The Year: Brain Age (Nintendo)

Achievement/Innovation Awards

Innovation In Gaming: Wii Sports (Nintendo)
Achievement In Art Direction: Gears Of War (Epic/Microsoft)
Achievement In Story and Character Development: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo)
Achievement In Game Design: Wii Sports (Nintendo)
Achievement In Animation: Gears Of War (Epic/Microsoft)
Achievement In Soundtrack: Guitar Hero 2 (Activision/Red Octane/Harmonix)
Achievement In Sound Design: Call of Duty 3 (Activision/Treyarch)
Achievement In Online Play: Gears Of War (Epic/Microsoft)

A full list of winners for all awards, including specific individuals honored, are available via an official press release from the AIAS.

In addition, for the first time, the AIAS honored former president of Nintendo of America, Minoru Arakawa, and chairman emeritus of Nintendo of America, Howard Lincoln with Lifetime Achievement Awards. The AIAS also inducted video game pioneer Dan Bunten (known later in life as Danielle Bunten Berry) as the tenth member of its Hall of Fame.

"Last night, we recognized the brightest and most innovative in video games in what can be considered one of the best years the video game industry has seen," said Joseph Olin, president, AIAS.

I saw a topic regarding it earlier today when the servers were all haywire but it seems to have disappeared again. Anyways, online category should have gone to Resistance.

Innovation is the only thing they got right, beyond the completely subjective Game of the Year category.

Edit: And maybe sound design. I haven't played CoD 3. Good choice for soundtrack also.

GAF was busy havina a seizure when the news came out. Anyway, great news for Gears, and well deserved in my opinion.

I admittedly haven't played it, but can someone tell me how:

Achievement In Story and Character Development: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Nintendo)

Totally serious question - how were the characters developed beyond what we knew about the whole Zelda universe, or was it just the addition of the wolf?

Gears deserves all praise. Yes, there are complaints, but I think it will be a great springboad to what we will demand from devs in the future.

The AIAS has really worthwhile awards like:

Outstanding Character Performance:

a. Male
* Gears of War (P: Microsoft Game Studios, D: Epic Games,
Producer: Rod Ferguson, Game Director: Michael Capps, Creative
Director: Cliff Bleszinski)

b. Female
* Viva Pinata (P: Microsoft Game Studios, D: Rare,
Producer/Game Director/Creative Director: Greg Mayles)

Also got to love the way Wii Sports wins "Game Play Engineering", "Game Design", "Outstanding Innovation in Gaming" and then the best sports game goes to THP8.

AIAS is a sham, it's pay-to-play so if the publisher of a game doesn't front the cash then they're not listed as a nominee.

I think Zelda should have won Console game of the year but I am ok with Gears cause it is a great game and something fresh and new. But "Achievement In Online Play" I don't know about that one.

I really liked the chatter in Gear, it felt very realistic sort of but best male voice actor should have been Balthier in FFXII.

Ugh. The only reason the AIAS still exists is so that publishers can stamp 'Game of the Year' on the front of their boxes.

Resistance should've gotten the online achievement. :)
maybe they weren't just talking about the competitive multiplayer.

Gears with it's lag free, drop in drop out, co-op is certainly an achievement.

Yeah same here. I was under the impression it had the same amount of storyline as past Zelda games. Interesting.

I'll probably have a bunch of people disagree with me but, out of the nominees for online achievement...I think Chromehounds should have won.

drop-in/drop-out co-op is cool.

gears online matchmaking is something very close to broken, though. Biggest host advantage of all time.

i still play it and love it, but it's hard to go back to p2p after playing resistance.

Aren't you in Europe? Have you even PLAYED Resistance? Seriously, could you be any less of a Sony shill?

don't get me wrong, i know that resistance mp doesn't get it's dues, but i also honestly think that Gears co-op doesn't either.

chromehounds could've been a contender if their online system wasn't so broken when the game came out. i've gotta agree w/ JB and Denog though, resistance's online is practically flawless. it would have deserved the win if it got it.

the games won dozens and dozens of awards, many of which include online play. of course it's been recognized. resistance, on the other hand, doesn't get recognized because of sticker shock.

Or, you know, at least a god damned nomination. Sorry for repeating myself here, but this is just ridiculous.

How exactly does this differ from say every other medium out there?

Academy Awards: Not a member of the academy, no awards for you.
Grammy's: Ditto
Emmy's: Ditto

Gears got what it deserved. The online play isn't broken and the co-op does factor in for online play so I can see why it won that category. Next.

Well, Gears did something no other game I ever remember doing. Full drop in, drop out coop. That alone puts it ahead of all the competition for me.

Played Resistance online?

Gears/Oblivion should have been tied for Game of the Year award. It is always unfair to select single Game of the Year from cross platforms.

Be glad Saint's Row didn't win that particular award instead.

I pretty much disagree with every single award here.

The AIAS is total bullshit, the awards are all moneyhatted, that's why we don't see any love for Capcom or 2006's GOTY Okami.

Well, I don't own a PS3 and I am hardly ever my bros place since he's always out in LA shooting some commercial of some sort.

So you haven't really given it time, then, right? ;)

Look at my tag for reference. I have been a HUGE supporter of X360 on these boards and have been given that tag because of it. However, much to the surprise of some, I am actually just a guy who loves games. Now, I attended a Gears preview event, praised it heavily, and as JB1981 can attest, he and I have played Gears a TON online and off. Now, 2 weeks ago I bought a PS3, primarily because people like JB1981 were telling me how great Resistance is. I knew I was going to get a PS3, but I was a little wary of spending the cash this early. Having played Resistance now for a better part of the last two weeks, I can honestly say it is one of the more underrated games in recent memory and absolutely should have been nominated for its online play and it should have won. I think Resistance is being neglected because of misconceptions about the online setup of Sony and the fact that the PSN is not on par with all the services XBL offfers. Not a reason though for Resistance to get neglected. Insomniac deserves better than this.

You should read that again....

Nah, I played co-op with GhaleonEB one time (doubt he remembers) but he was hosting. He lives in Washington, I'm in NYC. I couldn't kill a wretch if my life depended on it. I kept dieing over and over, because the bullets seemed to be lagging. Maybe it was the distance, but the lag was bad on my end. Everyone else I've played co-op with has been in the tri-state area and the game has run flawlessly. You can't say the game is lag-free, it's not. All P2P games will introduce some sort of lag depending on the circumstances. The only way I'm playing co-op is if I'm hosting or the person lives nearby.

Uh, I have no idea what you would qualify as enough time.

What does Resistance do that hasn't been done before in an FPS? I couldn't see anything that really stood out and made it unique or new in any way. 40 players at once has been done, and then some.

JoJo13 said:
What, Co-op mode? SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault on PS2 had a 4 player Co-op online mode to go along with 32 player online mode.

Drop in, drop out anytime coop? Setting it all up ahead of time is a lot easier than allowing users to just jump in midstream.
