I really need to pick up my reading speed again...

I liked Licoln though it didn't really help me with understanding American Politics any better... then again I don't get German politics either...

Despicable Me was actually quite funny. I was sceptical since the friend who recommended it to me normally has a really different taste in movies than I do. But I laughed quite a bit and think that the funny moments make up for the sometimes overly cute and predictable story.

As for Cloud Atlas I haven't read the book and hope that I have not ruined it for me, but the movie was quite good. I did think though that I would have liked it better if the single stories would have been told in larger portions instead of constantly switching.

Just do it. An hour or so every night before you go to bed, more during the day if you have down time. I read more on the weekends.

If you're into digital reading, having a Kindle or a tablet with the Kindle app makes a big difference for some of us. I read way faster that way, as weird as it sounds.

Finally a new book for my list. Not my favorite of the Garret P.I. novels but still a fun and fast-paced read. Got confused in the ending a bit.

There is movie festival in town which means I get to watch strange movies I'd normally never heard of :)

A field in England is a black and white movie about a bunch of people in mid 17th century England that try to dig up a treasure, the only problem is that the mushrooms they had for dinner were hallucinogenic. And though this movie had some fun moments one should not expect a slapsticky comedy about people on drugs doing stupid stuff. I couldn't say for sure what the hell that movie actually wanted to tell me but whatever it was it was told in beautiful and eerie pictures underlined with atmoshperic sounds and music.

Blancanieves was also a black and white movie and a silent one to boot. As the title suggests it is a retelling of Snow White, this time set in spain of the early 20th century. I loved how the movie managed to conveys the look and feel of the old silent movies of that era. Only the camera-work betrays that illusion by using shots that wouldn't have been possible at that time, which isn't a bad thing though. The story itself is told differently enough to not become predictable, which is a surprise given the well known source. And the evil stepmother is just beautifully evil.

New book :

James S.A. Corey - Caliban's War. ★★★★½ - Brilliant sequel that keeps the momentum of the previous book flowing perfectly. The original crew is as great as ever, but the new introductions (particularly Avasarala and Bobbie) really stole the show. The cliffhanger ending has me anxious to dive in to the next book in the series.

Italicized entries in the un-counted list were updates. I started the Vennard book waaaay back in January, and after I read Bel Canto: A History of Vocal Pedagogy, I just couldn't get the motivation to finish it. The latter was so much newer and made the latter almost irrelevant for my purposes. I finally decided to get it off my Goodreads Currently Reading this weekend, though. :)

You're not counting graphic novels? I'm sooo counting From Hell, which I'm reading right now. It's 500+ pages!!!!

Tsk, tsk. I didn't count Akira, and that is ~2000-ish pages. You can resist the temptation~

I started half a year late though. :(

It was my plan to get me through nanowrimo in November. I really don't think I can write fifty thousand words and read ten books without some pictures.*

Well I guess... Oh alright... :/

* well that and an incentive to get me reading more graphic novels.

Graphic novels are interesting to figure out. I'm not counting single TPBs, but I've definitely counted all complete series that I finish. Whether that ends up being 30 issues or 100, I'm counting them. I might revisit that rule in the future depending on where I end up.

I plan to read the complete run of Invincible (approximately 104 issues and counting) in the coming months and I'm counting the hell out of it. That's 2,000+ pages, and while the correlation isn't nearly 1:1 it will still take me forever to get through it all.

If I had Mumei's reading prowess it would probably be a non-issue.

At the end of the day this whole challenge is to get us reading and watching more stuff this year. It's entirely on the honor system. Some folks are counting each TPB as a book, or counting books with 500+ pages twice, etc. Follow your conscience for what works for you. :)

I read 1 - 84 of Invincible last year, and my copy of the second compendium came last month and I read through 96. Unfortunately my library only seems to get the Ultimate Editions so it'll probably be awhile before I can read through 104. :(

And honestly, the reason I don't count graphic novels is a) I end up reading a lot (and I read a lot more this year than I did last year), and b) it kind of throws off my page count.

New book:

[*] James S.A. Corey - Gods of Risk ★★★ - Probably overrating this by a star or two because of how great the series is. Totally non-essential side story here that doesn't add to anything that has come before. Bobbie Draper is still interesting, but the other characters are stale.

I counted the first volume of the Calvin and Hobbes books and once I finish the second one I will count that as well. It says 50 books not 50 novels.

I'm counting graphic novels.

Since I'm not counting the 500+ page books as two books, I figure that it balances itself out that way.

So I don't think I've made a post here but I'm up to 42 books (if you count 500+ page books as two)

or 32 if they just count as one.

Don't listen to Mumei, totally count your graphic novels.

Who made him the graphic novel police, anyway? :p

I counted a volume last year as a single entry. Just to say I'd read at least one. The conscience thing is correct though. The challenge is entirely for yourself. Come to think of it, I counted entire series as a single piece of film too.

Ohh yeahhh! Sorry mumei. I think you just got over-ruled!

I counted the first volume of the Calvin and Hobbes books and once I finish the second one I will count that as well. It says 50 books not 50 novels.

*nods*
There are plenty books I'm not counting, such as companion guides and chapters here and there from literary books on the subjects. Not to say I'm not reading short novels, but what I've listed here is just the tip of the iceberg. Admiring writers means that I trawl through author BIOS, wiki entries, literary commentaries and criticism. I forget most of this stuff come writing, but many a boring afternoon is spent following the trail of books. I wish had a week for each book, but hey needs must.

I'm counting graphic novels.

Looks like we're good amigo.

:)

Cheat codes are a go!

that page count is a good idea; a good reference guide for folks looking for short books!!

Fine. I'll add Akira, if I can find a copy, and *not* have it count towards 50 books. It'll just be my 51st bonus book. Let it be on your conscience, if I only read 49 books in half a year!!!

BTW, I'm planning to read Arthur Miller plays too. Really neglected plays over the years. *runs*

Up to you. But I would count them as two [if I read any!], whereas some didn't last year, and are not this year.

*dashes out again*
*like a ninja*

Objection! There are rules set up in the first post that clearly states the 500+ page counting as 2 and has a ruling about graphic novels. You sir or madam are not the police but a vigilante. A vigilante I say! In the end though any additional restrictions you put on yourself is up to you.

New movies:

[*] Elysium ★★★ - As much as I like Blomkamp, with this movie and District 9 he's two for two on technically brilliant but politically heavy handed stories. Elysium beat the 99% message over my head to the point of distraction. The wealthy living in their own luxurious satellite system complete with advanced homeland defense measures to combat Spanish-speaking illegal immigrants...okay. Matt Damon was very solid, and the world building elements were extremely interesting.

[*] Mike Birbiglia: My Girlfriend's Boyfriend ★★★★ - Great comedian, with a very personal set about love, failed relationships, and finally finding the right person. He's a lot more subtle than most stand up comedians, and his sets are better for it. Hilarious and touching.

How should I count anthologies and complete works? I realize this is something I can decide for myself, but I just want some input :)

Right now I'm reading Oscar Wilde's complete works. Figured I could count The Picture of Dorian Gray as one book since it's his only novel, but what about all the other texts? Could the short stories be counted one by one, or should they be lumped together?

Same with anthologies. I'm taking a uni course called "The American Short Story before 1941". Can each story be counted, or should I just count the anthologies themselves (which would mean that they wouldn't be counted at all, since I only read a few stories in each anthology)?

I've personally been using 100 pages as my bare minimum. So for me, a single short story would be too, er, short to count, but an anthology of short stories would count as one. And if in that anthology there was, say, a novella that was long enough, I might count that separately.

I don't think you need to read every word in a book to count it; I often skip dozens of pages by not reading endnotes, citations, bibliographies, indices, and blah blah blah. If you're reading enough of it to feel like you aren't "cheating" by counting it, I say feel free.

It's as much dependent on the Author as it is on me. Oscar Wilde wrote one novel, so I'd find that one book on Good Read. The Canterville Ghost is a short story, longer than the others, but I'd lump it in as his collected works. So in total, that would be Two books (one novel and one collected anthology).

I think, I or somebody else, counted, Dubliners, by James Joyce as one, even if it contains the novella: the dead. that's because that is how it is generally printed.

Anthologies of novels, I'd list each novel separately. But Short story collections, I would try and find their original collections.

I read hundreds of short-stories last year & poems and didn't count them

I've read 150+ short stories/poems this year, and I'm not counting them. I would count books like dublinners though. And Text book Anthologies.

23 movies! Making progress. Slow and steady. etc etc

Been on a bit of a Miyazaki tear recently. I saw Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Nausicaä. Favorite of these is definitely Totoro, which is an absolutely lovely movie. Very sweet, and the relationship between the sisters reminded me so much of my own siblings. Made me feel very nostalgic for childhood.

Least favorite was probably Nausicaä, which is ambitious and epic and so on, and very creative, but ultimately just feels so over the top with its environmentalism and can't-we-all-just-get-along themes. I also didn't really like the way the Giant Warrior subplot resolved.

Probably going to stop with Kiki's Delivery Service, I'm getting a little animed out.

Have you seen Princess Mononoke? I feel like it's the revised and refined version of Nasuicaa. (Also still my first and favorite of his films).

Sort... of? Years ago at college my roommate was watching it while I was studying for a midterm, so I saw like 2/3 of it in bits and pieces. I didn't understand a lot of it, and basically don't remember any of it. Can't quite decide if I could watch it again and reasonably count it as a new movie for the purposes of this challenge.

We're talking about Miyazaki's masterpiece here.

1) Watch it!
2) Count it!
3) Win!

Just count it :p

It follows the same environmental themes, throws a bit of feminism in there, and features one of Billy Bob Thorton's better performances, as odd as that sounds.

Unrelated to that, I think Bling Ring might be one of the most pointless movies I've ever seen. "Our society is materialistic" is taken and stretched into a two hour movie that does absolutely nothing interesting with that statement.

  • Albrecht Wacker - Sniper on the Eastern Front

New movie:

[*] Seeking a Friend for the End of the World ★★★★ - Tender, touching, and terrifying. The quirky premise had me wondering whether I'd find the situation more paralyzing or liberating knowing exactly when I would die. I'll forgive one massive plot hole at the end because it's really not the kind of film that concerns itself with realism. Steve Carrell was awesome.

Retribution Falls was a very light but very fun book. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I love Murakami! This was the second novel by him, after Norwegian Wood, I actually read in Japanese. I think I'll take on Kafka on the shore next.

New movies:

[*] The Campaign ★★½ - This movie may have come out last year, but it feels incredibly dated and I presume it will get even worse with age. There were a few funny moments, but nothing hilarious.

[*] Star Trek Into Darkness ★★★½ - Fun film, but I found the plot a bit safe and predictable. I felt a ton of goodwill about the original reboot, but I don't feel like any characters advanced in this one. Fairly safe for a Star Trek film. Not bad, but I expected better.

New book:

[*] James S.A. Corey - Abaddon's Gate ★★★★½ - What a ride this series has been! I didn't want the book to end, and now I'll have to wait for the next one to be published. Holden, Naomi, and Amos remain my favorites, although some of the new characters (especially Bull) were very enjoyable.
Doors and corners.

And we have another update. I think at this point, I am hoping ill just hit 15 books ;/

Interesting that choodi's list has comics when I'm about to ask about them:

Did we ever figure out some sort of "rule" for comics? I've read the entirety of The Walking Dead over the year, but didn't add them as it felt weird to do single issues, but would volumes count?

Also, what about "graphic novels" (dumb term) or standalone works? I just read Crisis on Infinite Earths: The Absolute Edition which also has some 90 odd pages of supplementary written stuff, so I feel like that least has got to count.

No clear consensus. Some people are counting individual TPBs, but those only collect 5-6 issues and can be finished in 20 minutes. I personally don't think that's book-worthy, especially if it's part of a long ongoing series.

It's all degrees and doing what you think is right.

I'd say the majority of people on here would count every individual volume, so you would have 19 "books" from it. I think that's questionable since you can finish all of it in less time than it takes to read one novel.

Personally, I'd count the entire collection you've read as one full book. I'm slowly working my way through all of Invincible (around 105 issues so far) and plan to count it as one book. I also counted the 36 issues of Remender's Uncanny X-Force as a book, since it's a finished series. By that logic, I would probably count the Crisis collection you listed.

Mumei has read a ton of comics and isn't counting them at all, so that's an even more restrictive view.

I'm not entirely consistent. For the most part, I'm counting things in the form they come in. IE, if I read the Walking Dead anthology, I would count that as one, but you can see that I put some individual TPBs down as well.
