I am very interested in playing this. I didn't play LoF but this game looks pretty fucking awesome where LoF looked kinda meh.
I'd recommend only playing LoF to see what a DS clone feels like when it's done wrong. I know there are people that enjoy the game, and I don't fault them, but even some of them have to agree that compared to dark souls, it's a poor imitation.
The Surge on the other hand feels more inspired by the subgenre, rather than directly copying it. There are similar mechanics, sure, but The Surge separates itself by introducing a lot of unique mechanics that are far different to standard souls-like games.
But also, we might be drawn to the sci-fi setting, since dark fantasy is generally the go-to for Souls-like games.
Good to hear, thanks. Is the world Interconnected ala Dark Souls or is it similar to something like Ni-Oh, or just straight up level by level?
Actually, it's a bit of both. Areas are separated by a train, so they're self contained explorable spaces, however, those areas are really well interconnected, with many paths and shortcuts. So I think DS1 fans will be very happy with that.
