What is it?

The Daytona 500 is a yearly 500 mile race in Daytona Beach, Florida where 43 cars go really fast counterclockwise around a banked, paved oval. It's also the opening race of the NASCAR season, though nobody really cares.

When is it?

1:00* PM EST.

So probably by the time they make it through the pre-race national anthem sponsored by Lowe's and the military flyby brought to you by Boeing and the official pre-race prayer brought to you by Viagra, they might start actually racing by 2 PM. Maybe.

Danica Patrick?

... is not very good at driving NASCARs. However, she's driving for a good team with really good equipment, so when she crashes out she will probably be near the front. Which should make that very exciting.

Austin Dillon is a rookie driver starting at the front, and is the first person to race the #3 in NASCAR's premiere series since Dale Earnhardt died. He will likely be booed by fans for this, since NASCAR fans aren't exactly the brightest bunch. Nevermind that Dillon is racing a car owned by Richard Childress like Earnhardt did, that he's Childress's grandson, and that Childress and Earnhardt were the bro-est of bros. Boooo!!

Also, Dillon wears a stupid cowboy hat all the time. Boooo!!

Who cares? Isn't Jimmie Johnson just going to win like always?

I'd say it's a waste of a good seat but maybe it isn't? I think Patrick brings in enough interest from outsiders for it to be worth it, but I could be very wrong.

I don't mind them bringing back the #3, I just wish they'd make it look different. I mean, Jr's #88 doesn't look like Dale Jarrett's #88. Change that shit up.

I may or may not have a #3 decal on the back of my car, and I don't want it to suddenly be an Austin Dillon decal.

Have watched NASCAR since I was a kid. I am very excite go Dale jr. Hope it is a exciting race.

The font of the number 3 looks the same but they changed the color. Its red now instead of white. I personally don't like him using the number. The only person that should run the number is Dale jr. I think I read somewhere that he didn't want it because it would bring too much responsibility to live up to his dads legacy.

The race is fixed! Austin Dillion will win the race. It'll be NASCAR's feel good story of the year when the 3 wins the race. The last time we saw the 3, they were cutting Earnhardt's body out of it. It'll be on every newscast all week when the 3 wins the 500 in its first year back.

Banning tandem was the worst thing. At least with tandem racing they passed. Expect 185-190 laps of high speed pace laps.

Always felt bad for Montoya about that, although to be fair it was completely hilarious. (once it was clear that no one had died, that is)

Tough to succeed in NASCAR without a background of dirt track/offroad racing. Thought he did well on the tracks he should've.

We usually post in the general motorsports thread (buried in off-topic community), which suits my style because I like sports car racing better now anyway!

I think we tried a NASCAR OT last year (or two years ago?), which was active for the Daytona 500 and nothing else.

I felt like last year had a ton of rain delays. I really hope it doesnt happen again this year. I love NASCAR but they have some major things working against them. Weather is unavoidable and seems to have it out for the sport. There most popular race is the first one and very few stick around for the last one. I bail as soon as NFL starts which sucks I know. I dont even comprehend this new Chase format.

I really hope they get the race going and it ends before midnight.

It looks like the rain SPLITS them, but again I don't trust that radar now that I've see live pictures. If they can get started in the next two hours they should be good.

If they don't finish today it doesn't look good... next few days are just the same.

Radar looks horrific, though. Hard to imagine them getting underway in the next couple of hours. Maybe at 6?

I was thinking about this but how would they be able to avoid it? They have to plan the race so far in advance, I can't believe any weather data at that time would be helpful. Obviously they can go off previous data but that's really still a coin-flip.
