Media Create Sales 4/30 - 5/06

Yes, but when that happens we expect the attach rate to DROP, not to go UP. If sinobi's numbers match the MC numbers then Wii Sports will have sold more copies than the Wii itself during Golden Week, which strikes me as improbable.

I don't find it too improbable. What we may have been seeing this past week were sales of Wii where the first title bought was not Wii Sports (instead, SPM or some such). Then the next week people decide to hop on the Wii Sports train and pick it up after their Wii purchase.

Not entirely unreasonable.

What about Star Ocean....that was also JUST ANNOUNCED for NEXT-GEN consoles.
So it won't come out for six or seven years? Blimey. You'd hope they'd be working for stuff that's out now, really. Still, planning ahead...

No, the PS4's coming out this fall. It'll be announced at E3. Believe.

Were that the case, though, we'd expect last week's Wii Sports tie ratio would be lower than usual, but it wasn't. So for the exception to work this week, we also have to make an exception for last week and conjecture that some other group increased their Wii Sports purchases for that week to make things appear even.

Just a few more hours till hardware numbers are in. I don't know about you, but Nintendomination is ACTUALLY starting to get boring. I'd like to see PS3 or PSP to see a huge increase in numbers this week to make things interesting again. But that won't happen.

Next week (that is, this week) will be different. There are some big PS2 games coming out.

5/7 - 5/13:
PS2 - 2
Simple 2000 Series, Vol. 117: THE Zero Fighter Plane (D3 Publisher)
Wrestling Kingdom 2: Pro Wrestling World War (Yuke's)

Unless you're talking about the few titles that just got added to THE BEST series.

"Vinnk's Village" Anecdotal Report

Sorry for the lack of reports the last few weeks. I was on Vacation in the United States and couldn’t really keep track of what was going on in Japan.

For those who recently joined the sales age fun, here is some background:

My town is in Oita Prefecture (in the Kyushu Region) the population is 80,000 (or 60,000 before it merged with 4 surrounding small villages), which is quite small by Japanese standards.

I will track sales from all the stores that sell video games. They are:

2 department stores that sell games (Jusco and Youme Town)
1 discount store with a very small game section. (Mr.Max)
1 manga/anime/game store (Book-net)
1 porn store that tries to look legitimate buy having a small game/DVD section in the front and a massive porn section behind a curtain. (Goody)
1 electronics chain store with a game section (Best Denki)
2 dedicated game stores (Wanpaku and Famicom Dojo)
Yamada Denki, a new electronics store just opened last month.

Most anecdotal reports come from big cities like Tokyo and Osaka and in those places people will line up for new games and things sell out all the time. It doesn’t always paint a very accurate picture of Japan outside of metropolitan areas. My numbers are not supposed to represent Japan, but are just my observations based on the town I happen to live in.

This week I was asked to look for: Wii, DS lite, FF12:RW, Panel de Pon, One Piece, Big Brain Academy and GS4. I went Thursday May 10th, 2007:

Jusco
Wii: Sold out
DS Lite: 1
FF12: RW: 5
Panel de Pon: 1
One Piece: Sold Out
BBA: 3
GS4: 2

Youme Town
Wii: Sold out
DS Lite: Sold Out
FF12: RW: 4
Panel de Pon: Sold Out
One Piece: Sold Out
BBA: 5
GS4: 1

Mr. Max
Wii: Sold out
DS Lite: Sold out
FF12: RW: 3
Panel de Pon: Sold Out
One Piece: Sold Out
BBA: 1
GS4: Sold Out

Book-Net
Wii: Sold out
DS Lite: Sold Out
FF12: RW: 3
Panel de Pon: Sold Out
One Piece: 3
BBA: 4
GS4: 2

Goody
Wii: Has never had a Wii
DS Lite: Sold out
FF12: RW: 1
Panel de Pon: Sold Out
One Piece: Sold Out
BBA: 1
GS4: Sold Out

Best Denki
Wii: Sold out
DS Lite: 3
FF12: RW: 4
Panel de Pon: 3
One Piece: 4
BBA: 8
GS4: 4

Wanpaku
Wii: Sold out
DS Lite: 2
FF12: RW: 6
Panel de Pon: 2
One Piece: 7
BBA: 11
GS4: 3

Famicom Dojo
Wii: Sold out
DS Lite: 3 (1 is the RW bundle)
FF12: RW: 2
Panel de Pon: Sold Out
One Piece: Sold Out
BBA: 1
GS4: 1

Yamada Denki
Wii: Sold out
DS Lite: Sold Out
FF12: RW: 6
Panel de Pon: at least 2 (spotted in the back)
One Piece: Sold Out
BBA: 6
GS4: 5

TOTALS:
Wii: Sold Out
DS Lite: 9
FF12: RW: 34
Panel de Pon: 8
One Piece: 14
BBA: 40
GS4: 18

NOTES:

1. There is not a single Wii system to be found in my town.

2. DS lite is still hard to find, but nowhere near impossible.

3. One Piece is odd because some stores are sold out and others have a bunch of copies, my guess is that there is a restock happening and it hasn’t hit all stores yet. But had I not read of the sellout, I would be led to believe that this time is not supply constrained.

4. Of the remaining games, the only one that might possibly still be supply constrained is Panel de Pon, but it is also possible that stores just didn’t order as many of this game.

5. FF12:RW and GS4 already have used copies on shelves so I doubt there will be any supply issues concerning either of these titles. And in the case of FF12:RW there seems to be quite a surplus.

6. “Old Reliable” (The PS3 at Famicom Dojo) has been there since 5 weeks after launch. It is sitting next to a sign that says “Reserve your PS3 now”. This sigh seems to serve no purpose other than to mock this poor machine.

7. The PS3 kiosk at Wanpaku has been retrofitted into another PS2 kiosk. I suppose with no new games this month (other than Madden) it doesn’t pay to keep it up until there is something new.

8. It’s good to be home.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.

so what, there were weeks with no new Wii releases, didn't stop Play and Sports from selling.

You really should buy old relaible now, Vink.

It seems like the wii is actually even more supply constrained now that they have bigger stocks, :lol

...Great stuff. I'm even tempted to send you the claude for 'Old Reliable' but I have this feeling you'd spend it on what's behind the curtain at Goody. 8')

Hey, well done Vinnk, it's good to get the reports back and nice for you to be back home too! :D

Seems they really did overestimate the demand for Revenant Wings, and Big Brain Academy is a slow burner based on the weekly sales so far.

That footnote about One Piece is interesting as well; it's hard to know yet if interest in the game has really petered off or it is doing up-down sales based on supply constraints (kind of like Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, but obviously on a much, much, much smaller scale.) I'm convinced it could do quite well in its lifetime.

EDIT: Added an extra "much" to emphasise the difference between the two games.

Thanks guys! I am glad you like the reports. They take a long time to make, but I think the info is useful. If nothing else, it is useful to me to see what these numbers translate to in real life.

As for Old Reliable, if it is still there by TGS I am going to buy it out of pity.

when does tonights numbers come out? Should be pretty damned high.
and next week too probably judging from it being sold out everywhere. I really do thing Square was already neck deep in Ps3 development when they made the list for the Squenix party. No doubt they are noticing these sales and the consistency, as well as some third party software selling pretty well. But even if they dont, Sega definitely has Wii fans covered.

Hiro should totally let you take it for free.

In any case, and I can't believe neither I nor anyone thought of this earlier, but you should have totally been on the lookout for Madden 07 PS3. Oh well.

That's kind of sad actually.

I doubt it, Square has made it known where they stand regarding the Wii: spinoffs and shit. If the last 5 months of PS3 bomba and Wii rising to heaven hasn't influenced them at all, the next 5 won't either.

That might well be true to a certain extent but it's only a matter of time till Nintendo will have to force their hand...or they can't ignore money...

you are probably right. Hopefully some other RPg makers will step up to the plate. like Atlus. Althoutgh Im pretty sure with these kinds of sales the wii SHOULD get a fair number of RPgs made for it. The thing I dont understand is why just because nintendo themselves focus more on non-games why do other publishers think they should? Perhaps if they make good quality games for the hardcore theyll have the market to themselves on the wii? Nah that makes too much sense doesnt it.

Yes, for whatever reason, third parties think that on Nintendo systems, they have to go directly head-to-head with whatever Nintendo is doing, and therefore, get destroyed in the process.

What did third parties do on Sony platforms when they didn't have someone to follow? I'm just astonished that it's like this.

The console itself doesn't deserve pity, but I always feel sorry for small shops that buy stock in hopes of sales and get burned. I'd rather someone buy that one and they don't re-stock then it sit there forever.

When it comes to square-enix i will say i believe there is more wii support comming, its a matter of time. The two "testing water" products (DQS-FFCC) imo are really good offernings, but the announcement of Chocobo Dungeon makes me believe it isnt just lip service like FFCC was for GC, even if they are still cautious about their support. What i DO think, is the direction of the games they will offer wont be of the type we are used from them for PS2 and PS3, as in more epic and cinematic, but probably new ip's/ more novel concepts.

I wouldn't be surprised if Square Enix doesn't change their position until Final Fantasy XIII comes out on the PS3. Once they see that not do as well as other games in the series, they might, just might, give up on the PS3. Really, the only thing that can restore my confidence about Square Enix on the Wii would be that Star Ocean 4 is actually for the Wii. That doesn't seem likely though.

the consolation I have is that games like SATSR, NiGHTS JOD, Treasure Island Z, Opoona, Deweys Adventure, RE:UC, Ghost Squad, SSX Blur, No More Heroes, Boogie and others built for the Wii actually do exist already and its not ALL halfhearted port attempts. The lineup right there is already leagues ahead of what the Gamecube had Third Partywise, and bodes well for the system. I would honestly be completely satisfied already with the games I have now, those games listed, and Nintendos first party stuff. the wii has already shown itself to be well worth the purchase for me.

I would honestly rather Square took a gamble and made a completely new IP to take advantage of the Wii's capabilities pspecifically. Idf be satisfied with that. I dont care if its not DQ or FF (though having DQX on Wii would pretty much guarantee more RPg support for it) I just want to see Square put some real creative effort on the wii and treat it as the viable system it is, even if its not HD. Its still selling like ****ing crazy.

That blue maw is widening :)

So... the PS3 and X360 combined take up only 7% of software sales? Wow...

Would it be at all possible to get a version of this with absolute numbers rather than percentages; it might be able to indicate if the PS3 - or, indeed, 360 - manage reasonably steady sales of software.
