I am really liking the graphics in this game. Everything just looks so much better than in PH, and the overworld is MUCH better.

As a nice touch, if you look at Link while he's on the train, his hat is blowing in the wind just like it did in Wind Waker. I love that.

OK, after thr third dungeon (water...) I can say that i definitely don't agree with reviewers.

In almost every review I read, they said the game fixes ALL of the problem with PH, which is absolutely not true.

PH vs ST so far:
The tower is less annoying in ST because of no repetition (but they could have added an elevator the damn thing). It is still annoying, controlling Zelda (spoiler) can be very boring.
Puzzles were definitely better in PH, which has the best puzzles in any Zelda game. And most of what I've played are the same as the old PH puzzles. Been there done that.
I think boat is better than train (more freedom) but hard breaking is addicting; it's fun to carry passengers (although not too fun defending them...) too and the train music is awesome.
The music of ST is a hundred times better than the music in PH and should be included in future Zelda games.
Difficulty is almost the same (easy as fuck), and the dungeons are very short too; I thought they would change that...
Flute can be hard to play (getting the tempo while skipping notes... ugh! and I do know how to play real musical instruments (flutes, ocarinas, piano, etc))

Also, I have a hard time finding money, because if you sell treasures, you can't upgrade the train (need money to buy bomb bag, shield (which are optional items; shield is almost useless and bombs are used to discover secrets) and a heart; and also to play the postcard thing to win prizes or whatever that's for).

All in all I am enjoying the game, but will be my third Zelda game that I will not replay (WW, PH and this)

What you read, definitely PH puzzles are the most out of the box and overall best puzzles in the series. There is nothing to argue here; other Zelda games relied too much on pushing box puzzles and shit like that, but in PH the puzzles were on an entirely new level.

manuel, you're just before the bits where the game gets INCREDIBLY difficult at times. I currently stuck on (DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T REACHED THE TOP OF THE SoT)
post-fifth dungeon SoT floors. Super-difficult stuff.

Oh, well looks like you win then. :/

Seriously, ST>PH in every way imaginable. I didn't think I'd like it as much as I do, to be honest.

I hope it gives me some challenge =D, I'm all for difficult Zelda (I hate when those damn snow wolves hit you and get one fucking quarter of a heart!! how ridiculous can that be?)

Game is still getting better. Also, the music is SO rad. Some of the best in the franchise history, imo.

I don't know what to think of the Spirit Flute still, it's very wonky. Picks up goddamn every sound around, constantly making things frustrating if you're playing in public. And fuck blowing into the mic. Timing is also incredibly difficult to nail.

Shoulda removed blowing into the mic altogether.

If your standard for what makes a good puzzle is "how many retarded gimmicks can I utilize of the DS functionality", then sure. It's the best EVER! Totally outside of the box!

if your standard is "how many of the puzzles are actually clever, remotely challenging and integrated into the dungeon in novel and interesting ways", then no. Fuck no. Jesus christ no. It's like goddamn LEARNING WITH ELMO type bullshit easy.

Phantom Hourglass puzzles, as most of its dungeon design, were some of the most insulting, preschool level shit in the franchise history. The developer's intent was to apparently "casualize" it, make things easy for people new to the franchise. And that's what they did, but as a direct hit to the quality of said puzzles. Genuinely insultingly easy.

Phantom Hourglass isn't even the Zelda game with the best puzzles on DS anymore.

Why did Gamespot score this game far below Phantom Hourglass? Seriously?

It only scored .5 less (9.0 versus 8.5). A different person reviewed both games, but if you read the text, he clearly argues that ST is the better game. Standards change through the years, so better games sometimes get lower scores than their predecessors. It's a sad fact of life.

Yeah the overworld is terrible. I don't know why Nintendo is intent with going this route for their handheld Zelda games, but man is it unfun. Everytime I have to go back onto the train tracks I grit my teeth.

spent an hour in the spirit temple after I cleared the 4th dungeon (fire temple) and I had to turn it off to use it as my alarm clock for the next morning, so I saved it thinking it would save my progress up to there. Then I turn the game on and all the floors are reset, and I even have to get the 3 light thingies to power up my sword again. Wish these Zelda games would save from directly where you are when you hit save :(

the ToS is weird like that.

it saves open door, or collected keys, but it doesn't save the power-ups. luckily, they're usually really easy to get to thanks to the already open doors (thanks to how inter-connected the whole thing is).

it might seem like you've lost everything, but check the doors! I know I panicked yesterday when I did the same thing, only to be relieved when I realised that it does save some progress.

Just making sure, are you fully aware of the significance of this statement?

Actually I never got your stance on Zelda music in general. Do you hate most of it or is ST's music that good?

ST's music really is that good. The town themes, sanctuary themes, and some of the later dungeon themes (Fire temple omg) are simply wonderful. That's not to mention the overworld theme, which is about the overworld's only saving grace other than the fact that your train looks cool.

I like a lot of Zelda music. A lot of it is fantastic.

I don't necessarily hold it up on some golden pedestal as some might, but it is fair to say Spirit Track's soundtrack is up there with the best in the franchise. It's the biggest surprise about this game considering Phantom Hourglass had a really underwhelming soundtrack.

Some really wonderful music in this game.

Definitely among the best overworld themes in the Zelda series.

My favorites:

1) THE Overworld theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XI0m8bhpWM

2) Sort of the same, and even better I think, just not as timeless. LA's overworld:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxxKG2BYwNY

3) The best 3D overworld theme by far. Wind Waker had I think probably the best overall OST, really captures the feeling of adventuring around the ocean:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGal2fBQ3EM&feature=related

4) Listed many times in this thread, because it rocks:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W_bFLwB0WY

5) The definition of epic, just wish it would've included a few remixes of the older themes in the middle of the arrangement. Still awesome...Twilight Princess' overworld:

I just beat the first dungeon and I realise it was the first one, but it was incredibly short and I was a bit disappointed when I got the new item just for killing some standard enemies, not a mini-boss like usual.

I do love the nods to Wind Waker though like the mentions of Tetra and Link being from Outset Village.
I hope WW Link gets mentioned soon or they at least say what happened to him, so far he hasn't been mentioned at all and it looks like he hasn't had any effect on the world outside of the royal guard uniform being based on his clothes.

I am surprised more people aren't discussing this game. I mean, the discussion in here is dead as shit.

Can't be surprised after Phantom Hourglass put people off (as it did me), but Spirit Tracks is so much more fun.

hey, I try, but most people aren't up to where I'm up to, so it isn't easy. Most people still haven't finished, I guess.

I'm gonna wait for drinky's inevitable shit-blasting of the game, whether it be warranted or not (most likely not). That will surely start the discussion.

Played through until finishing the first part of the spirit tower. It's definitely warming up to me more than PH did, and I liked that game.

Also got a real kick out of the whole scene in the spirit tower with
Zelda freaking out about her body and telling Link how she'll stay there and wait for him because it's a "tradition" for her ancestors to do so. And her reaction afterwards when she's told she actually has to help Link out.

Oh and all I can say to the change in rolling mechanics is "thank god"

I fully want to discuss the game, but everybody who gets it seems to blaze through it in a matter of hours and I'm wary of spoilers, so I haven't been reading a lot of posts. I've only just left the Spirit Tower for the first time.

I loved the little references to past games though, like
the stained-glass window of Tetra, WW/PH Niko being an old man, the royal guard/army wearing the Hero's clothes and what looks like the spinner from TP.
Plus, a Tingle reference, which is awesome.

I think Chancellor Cole might
be a Minish - at least, he had the same colouring as one (yellow skin, pink nose/cheeks, red hair, green clothes) before he went all Phoenix Wright and revealed his true form.
.

This Zelda is also shaping up to be one of the best sidekicks ever.

Nah, you're crazy. Outset Island, overworld, Dragon Roost, Forest Haven, Windfall, all the various dungeon themes, Hyrule Castle, etc. Ocarina's is great as well, sure, but it's overworld theme is not memorable. I feel like TWW's OST is much more fitting than OoT's.

I agree. WW has my favorite boss theme ever, too. I gotta replay that game.

ST's OST is doing pretty well so far. I've been humming the train theme all morning.

WW was occasionally bland, but when it was good, it was crazy good. The Legendary Hero (prologue) sends chills up my spine.

OOT had the best single track, Gerudo Valley, but I think Tww had the best music overall.

Oh, and Zelda rocks as a sidekick. Hope they carry on with that in future Zeldas to some degree.

well, I won't be getting this until Christmas so I've been avoiding the thread. Don't know why I'm here now. The previous thread title drew me in and I saw people complaining about the flute. Seems like all is well now.
